What 560 owners told NHTSA about the 2017 Ford F-350 Super Crew

The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-350. The contact stated that while hauling various materials at various speeds, the tire pressure warning light would illuminate the instrument panel. The contact had initially taken the vehicle to the dealer where they discovered that the valve stems on each of the outside tires had caused air to leak out of the tires. The contact had several valve stems replaced on multiple occasions; however, the failure had persisted. The manufacturer had been notified of the failure on separate occasions and two cases were filed with the manufacturer. All of the valve stems were initially replaced under warranty but since the warranty had expired, the manufacturer refused to offer assistance. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 10,000.

Driving on highway at 65 slight bump in road & steering wheel went crazy violent vibrating in front end. Had to reduce speed to 20 to get it to stop shaking. Continued down road same thing happened. The VIN is from my tow vehicle, your system wouldn't take the VIN of my Fifth Wheel RV (4YDF37329J4700954) which the tire that failed is installed on. The tire in question was purchased in April of 2021 and had approximately 500 miles on it when the tread separated from the tire and became wrapped around the axle of the RV. The tire is a Sailun S637 ST235/80R16.

Backup camera intermittently does not switch off when shifting into drive and moving forward, leaving a display that shows the road running backwards as you drive forwards, from there it may randomly turn bright blue, become pixelated - very distracting. Only way I've found to get it back to normal is to turn the vehicle completely off, and restart it. Yes it can be inspected, however it does happens intermittently, I can make and produce a video clip if necessary. No it hasn't been been inspected by anybody other than myself or my passengers. No there are not any warning lamps/messages/etc...

I have a 2017 Ford F-350 Super Duty. I've experienced numerous "Death Wobble" issue with this vehicle since I've owned it. It has been at the dealership eight times where Ford has stated the problem was diagnosed and repaired. I just returned from a road trip where I experienced six Death Wobble issues at highway speeds on Interstate 80 from Elko NV to Reno NV. When I pass over uneven pavement the truck front wheels begin to shake violently which forces me to reduce my speed to about 20 miles per hour. Luckily, only two semi trucks had to change lanes to keep from rear ending me. This is an inherent problem with Ford Super Duty trucks. When will the NHTSA force Ford to recall these potentially deadly vehicles? I have several videos of this problem if you would like to see them. I can only download photos.

The tailgate came down on its own while I was towing a fifth-wheel trailer. When I turned to come onto a road, the tailgate came in contact with the trailer. This both put the safety of myself and passengers/public at risk and also damaged the front compartment of the trailer. The vehicles keyfob was not in my pocket so I do not think that the tailgate could have been opened from it. I took the vehicle to Ford and they said that my truck does not meet all of the requirements of the 19S48 tailgate recall on 2017-2019 Superduty trucks. There was no warning light or any other visual indication that I was driving with the tailgate down. I'm concerned as I do not want this to happen again to my vehicle or others.

While driving vehicle down the road, "reduced engine power" light illuminates and then the vehicle stalls in less than five seconds. There is no warning of an issue or any problem before the engine dies. This is the second occurrence of this on the truck. It has happened while towing a heavy load. Total loss of power, sterring and braking ability is a serious issue and a danger to the public as well as myself and my family. This issue needs to be resolved by Ford ASAP!

When my truck reaches 35 to 40 mph or hits a small bump it begins to shake violently in the steering wheel making it hard to control. I took it to a dealership who stated there was a recall part available, but after the repair the problem immediately began upon leaving their parking lot. My hill decent assist system now turns on and says there is a fault. The dealership was able to reproduce the problem, but stated I would need to pay for any further inspections and repairs out of pocket. I have not reported to my insurance as I didn't think it would be covered by them. The problem began this year in early July (2021) and has yet to be fixed.

I had my Power tailgate randomly drop open while pulling a trailer causing roughly $2000 worth of damage to my truck and punched a football size hole in the front of my enclosed trailer (i’m assuming roughly another $2000 worth of damage), I was driving on about a 5 mile trip and didn’t hear or see anything when I went to back my trailer in the gate was down so at some point it randomly dropped while driving. To my knowledge all controls are supposed to be locked out while driving or in gear on a 2017 Ford F-350 super duty. My keys are in the center consul and I did not hit the remote or the button on the dashboard. To my knowledge Ford has known about the issue and did a minor recall on it but it is said to not be actually fixing the problem. I have filed a claim with my insurance company but I do not feel I should be responsible for a known defect in hardware or software that has not been addressed by Ford.

I was merging onto an express lane ramp on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at approximately 10:10PM the rear end of my truck started vibrating; I thought I had a knot on a tire, so my plan was to take the next exit to check all tires. As I merge onto the express lane, literally approximately 1 mile from the beginning of the ramp and the uncontrollable vibrating, I hear a lot of noise (I.e. clanking and beating). My truck RPM increased, but my speed did not. I coasted over to the shoulder to check my truck out. All tires were still inflated. I looked underneath and found my rear drive shaft laying on the ground. It had came loose from the front drive shaft. I had it towed to diesel mechanic shop the next day. They diagnosed as my rear axle suspension is cracked. I have the 4.10 rear axle on my truck.

My 2017 F-350 Ford pickup had a safety recall (recall #19S48) for an unintended tailgate opening. In March 2020 I brought the truck to Ford of Smithown to make the necessary repairs. I had 16,664 miles on the truck. In July 2021 the tailgate has opened up several times while driving. One time when towing a 5th wheel camper and as a result there is damage to the tailgate and 5th wheel camper. The truck's current mileage is 22,685.

While driving at freeway speeds of 60+mph and go over any bump in the road - such as a bridge transition that should be barely noticeable - the truck begins to shake UNCONTROLLABLY and will push you into other lanes of traffic. The ONLY way to get control of the vehicle is to brake hard and fast getting below 40 mph so the shaking will stop and you can regain control of the vehicle. It is unbelievably unsafe, dangerous and absolutely frightening. It is terrifying to drive my $60,000 truck. This occurs on a daily basis if driven at those speeds. Although we have not had an accident as of yet, it will happen if we drive the truck on the freeway. Extremely disappointing that the US Department of transportation has failed to do something about this. It has and will continue to kill people on the road. Ford must be mandated to fix these trucks.

When driving a speeds greater than 50 mph I have found that the internet has termed "Death Wobble" in my Truck. When this first occurred I took the truck in and they made some tweaks under warranty and said nothing was wrong. Then it happened again and took it back to the Ford dealership. They stated they could not find anything wrong and that I just needed new tires. They deliberately lied to me putting me and my employees at risk. Ford knows this is occurring and doesn't care. You can completely lose control of the vehicle at high rates of speed out of the blue.

Experiencing horrible death wobble. If I hit a road expansion joint, pot hole, etc. in a certain manner at typical highway speeds typically 55 to 70, the front end starts shaking horribly. The only way to regain control is by firmly pressing the breaks to immediately reduce the speed. This started when the vehicle had 26,000 miles on it and the dealer replaced the ball joints under warranty. This vehicle is only driven on the road. That fixed the problem until the vehicle reached around 50,000 miles now. It is dangerous either from the loss of control or having to slam on the breaks to regain control.
