What 560 owners told NHTSA about the 2017 Ford F-350 Super Crew

Traveling on the highway at approximately 65mph. Encountered a bridge expansion joint and the front tires and steering wheel began shaking violently which resulted in loss of steering and brake control. Apparently, this is a known issue with these trucks.

While driving on the freeway at approximately 60 mph the left front wheel hit a small pothole. The truck immediately begin shaking violently. The extreme shaking involved the entire front end of the truck and the steering wheel. The shaking lasted for approximately 30 seconds and stopped once the speed was reduced to about 40 mph. No warning lights or warning indicators came on before, during or after the incident. I am very fortunate that I was able to maintain enough control of the vehicle to not hit the center median on the freeway or other cars to my right. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION!

We were driving and noticed a few white puffs of smoke. The next thing that happened was a loud bang from the engine and the cab of the truck filled with black smoke. Within 5 minutes, the entire truck was engulfed in flames, as well as our camper. There was no warning indication on the dash. The insurance company had investigators look at the remains. However, since the truck was aluminum and the fuel filter housing and low pressure side of the fuel system was plastic, everything totally melted. The truck was properly serviced prior to our travels.

The front end of my Ford F350 can cause a forceful wobble when going over small bumps. The last time this occurred was on 11/26/22 while driving on the highway at 65 mph and I drove over one of the seams in the pavement. The front end began to wobble so forcefully, I had to slow down to around 30 mph, putting me and anyone behind me at risk of a rear end collision. I haul a travel trailer and if this were to happen while hauling, it could have more catastrophic effects. I've not been able to get it in to Ford to troubleshoot due to their long delays (7 to 9 weeks) in servicing vehicles. I'm trying again this week to take it in. It's not been inspected by anyone yet. There's no warning when this occurs. The first time this happened was either in the Fall of 2021 or early Spring of 2022.

The contact indicated that on several occasions, the door would not remain latched. On other occasions, the door would not open as needed, causing the driver to use the front passenger’s side door to exit the vehicle. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V652000 (Latches/Locks/Linkages). The contact indicated that the vehicle had experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 290,000.

The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-350. The contact stated that a "water in the fuel system" warning message appeared on the instrument panel. The contact watched videos online that showed him how to drain and prime the fuel system to correct the failure; once he performed the repair, the warning light disappeared. When the contact refueled the vehicle, the warning message displayed, and the vehicle began to hesitate upon depression of the accelerator. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and the contact was informed that there was DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) in his fuel tank which caused the failure. The contact disputed the diagnostic result and stated that he did not place def fluid in the fuel tank. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred him to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 68,000.

Okay, been hearing a lot of noises up underneath it, got under there and looked at my heat shields, that are just flaking off everywhere. I'm scared that my truck is going to catch on fire at this point. All of the heat shields around pretty much everything are disintegrating and falling apart. I've already filled out several of these and I went and tried to turn the truck in and to no avail. They have done everything in their power to not fix nothing on my truck. Nothing. I need some help. Please give me a call [XXX] The linkage, the power door locks and the door handles leaking, are all problems that I have and every one of them they know about and I'm scared that the front end is going to fall apart because of that linkage problem.. I can't get them to do nothing for me. The tailgate has been malfunctioning since day one and I had it kind of working here and there but then it ended up coming apart completely and the backup camera has been lost due to that and I just seen that that is a problem that they've had with many of these vehicles and I would love to get that fixed. Also because I do not have no backup camera on this truck it's just crazy. I mean I use it for work and I pull a lot of trailers and it was just you know. I don't even know what to say. I would please love it if somebody could help me get these problems fixed with Ford. I have tried and tried to no avail. I think they're trying to wait for me to get many many miles on my truck. I started trying to get this stuff fixed when I was back at $65,000 mi. You know and they was will not fix nothing. I realized that the door had water in it way back then and they just won't fix it. And also it's got a problem with a corroding and I plugged it in one time and it sparked so I need that fixed also. God I hope these people will finally do something. Third time returning my Ford F350 to the Friendly Ford dealership where it was purchased because of death wobble. Vehicle is driving at high speeds all three times has been on the freeway and all of a sudden it shakes violently and almost loses control of vehicle. The first time happened in January 18 of 2020 the second time happened June 25 of 2022 and then just three days ago October 12, 2022. The vehicle was almost crashed the last two times it happened. The shaking was so violent on the last time did it caused my fuel line to come loose and spell diesel fuel all the way back into town. again it has been to the dealership three times now to fix the problem and was told this last time that everything looked OK and that I had to test drive it and re-create the situation in order for them to diagnose it. Extremely dangerous to re-create the death wobble. during the second incident when my wife was driving with my three children in the back she narrowly avoided colliding with a concrete barrier. The most recent incident with my self driving and my three children in the back and my wife in the front seat almost caused an accident with a semi driver And the person behind me as it shook violently and I tried to get off the road to stop shaking. There were no warning lights messages or other symptoms of problem prior to the failure. Vehicle has been inspected three separate times by Friendly Ford of Las Vegas at 660 N. Decatur Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89107. Do not feel safe driving the vehicle.

During the failure, the tailgate and the trailer were damaged. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the failure. On Aug 25, 2021, my son took the truck to Crestview Ford in Crestview, FL with 32k miles on it. The Fuel filter on the engine was spraying diesel from a crack in the housing - Have a video and service records available for review. Crestview Ford replaced the fuel filter housing. On Oct 22, 2021, He was traveling to the Stark Fl area with a 4-wheeler in the back of the truck. He started smelling diesel really bad and pulled over and when he stepped out the steps were covered in diesel. When he pulled the hood release the engine compartment flamed up and filled the cab with smoke. He stepped away and called 911. The truck burned to the ground. I have pictures and fire department report available for review (see attached file). The truck had approximately 44k miles. My research has shown that this is a common problem in 2017 + super duty Ford diesel trucks.

Truck has was is called a DEATH WOBBLE. At highway speeds the steering will vibrate violently after crossing an expansion joint or bump in the road. Braking or rapid slow down will resolve the shaking. The issue seems to be getting worse. The truck was taken to the dealership for repair. The repair will cost several hundred dollars and not covered by the warranty. the mileage of the truck is 80,112 and is 90% highway miles.

Traveling down the road at or around 62 -65 mph and you hit a bump truck goes into a violent shake that can only be stopped by slowing down below 40 mph. You have to immediately start slowing down, and it there is someone following that isn’t paying attention it going to get us rear ended on the highway. The truck has 54,000 miles on it. Ford should own the problem.

Death Wobble started to occur around August 2021. No prior incidents. After the first time it would continue to happen anytime driving between 45-60 MPH and hitting a bump in the road. Once you found a bump that would trigger the death wobble, you could EASILY recreate the problem. Once the death wobble starts you have to slow down to 5-10 MPH before it’ll quit. During the wobble it is IMPOSSIBLE to control the vehicle as the steering wheel shakes violently and it feels like all wheels are bouncing opposite of one another creating a very scary and violent situation. I had a repair shop go in and replace anything that could be related and had 2 different alignment shops look into the problem. Ultimately nothing solves the issue.

The contact took the vehicle to the dealer for wheel balancing and alignment; however, the failure persisted. The contact returned the vehicle to the dealer who diagnosed that the front stabilizer and the drag links needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 36,000.

There was a recall, NHTSA Recall 19V864, for an "unintended tailgate opening" when the electrical parts became wet. I had the recall performed, but the tailgate continues to fall when water gets in the tailgate. Ford needs to readdress this issue to replace the tailgate from an electrically operated to a manual tailgate. I had to start securing the tailgate with a device to keep it from falling down, especially when towing my RV. I am afraid it would have fallen down damaging it just like it did when I was towing my Son's RV causing over $600 damage to the RV cargo doors and damaging the Truck's tailgate. The tailgate has fallen down at least five (5) times since the recall repair. Last one was today during a thunderstorm. The truck was sitting still, other times driving down the road.

Back-UP and 360 degree cameras have failed and are malfunctioning. They have been replaced twice and safety issue still exists. The cameras are foggy and especially at night and are not very clear. Safety hazard has occurred on several occasions where a child, person or object behind the vehicle are not clearly seen. There is a safety recall for 2019 super duty trucks but not for the 2017 models. This safety issue is very common according to internet searches and several vehicles all have the same issues and concerns. God forbid that a child or person is hurt because of the low visibility of these cameras. It is not only the back-up rearview camera but all of the cameras that are part of the 360 degree view of visibility. The side cameras as well as the forward facing camera all have the same issue. Ford should recall and remedy this issue before anyone gets hurt or killed if it hasn't already happened because of this issue.

Ford trucks have a known issue of cameras fogging up with condensation. Becomes very difficult to see where you’re backing into. The condensation gets so bad you can’t see at all sometimes. These trucks are big and need the cameras to assist in and out of tight spaces or keep you from rolling over something without knowing it.

Restricted CCV Separator causing excessive crankcase pressure buildup. 2017-2019 models of this engine have this CCV design, but the Crankcase Oil Separator (containing this part) was redesigned from 2020 forward for the same engine due to excessive complaints of buildup and costly secondary effects such as Charge Air Cooling Tube splits/failures. This modification was never offered to 2017-2019 model year vehicles with this engine. Servicing Dealer indicated that this failure, and secondary failures led to loss of engine oil, which leads to catastrophic engine failure while driving. There are no indications via OBD codes or dash warnings indicating there is an issue, giving a false sense of security to the driver, especially when towing large loads. This problem was discovered on this vehicle during a routine oil change when low engine oil was observed (less than 2 quarts out of 13 quart capacity present in the engine upon attempting to drain).
