JEEP 2024 Wrangler 4XE HYBRID EXPLODED VIN# [XXX] On [XXX], just before [XXX], our 2024 hybrid vehicle began emitting smoke while parked in our attached garage. Thankfully, our smoke alarm alerted us - my wife discovered it was coming from the garage and immediately called 911. Police arrived within minutes and were able to push the car out of the garage. Shortly after that, the vehicle caught fire. First responders later told us that if my wife had not acted quickly, the fire could have easily spread to our home—potentially resulting in a total loss, or worse, endangering our lives if it had happened while we were asleep. It took four hours of continuous firefighting to manage the flames. The Hazmat team explained that this was due to “thermal runaway”, a dangerous chain reaction in lithium-ion batteries where heat builds uncontrollably, leading to fire or even explosions. These types of fires can’t be extinguished conventionally—they must burn out once the chemical reaction is complete. Some Important Context: This vehicle is the same year, make, and model as those recently recalled for hybrid battery fire risks. However, our VIN was not included in the recall—something we now believe may have been an oversight, as the circumstances appear nearly identical. Back in June, the car had another serious issue: it shut down completely despite a full gas tank and a 50% EV charge. It had to be towed to the dealership, and was returned to us a day or 2 later, marked as “repaired.” After the fire - I reviewed the service paperwork, we found that the specific error code pointed to unstable hybrid battery voltage—a potential sign of a failing battery pack. Seems like my jeep isn’t tuned correctly or the engine/transmission has an issue. Engine: -When starting and as engine warming up it shakes the care periodically. There are times when it will shake the car as it heats up, rocking the car slightly and you can hear the engine make a weird knocking noise. -This also occurs when in E-Save mode and charging the battery is selected. The engine does not idle smooth all the time and sometimes runs rough then goes back to normal -There does not seem to be much torque Transmission: -The 1st – 3rd gear shift at high RPM times even when barley giving it any gas. -The transmission shifts down into 2nd gear at around 18-20 mph when gradually slowing down in traffic causing the jeep to slow down quickly and throws you forward. If you catch it during its shift (which is longer than any other gear) it will slam into 2nd and then back into 3rd gear. You lose power as it takes several seconds to complete the shifting. -The gear I feel should smoothly shift into and out of 2nd at around 15 mph, like it does in the cars I rented. oDoes the shift timing need to be remapped or reset? Software update: -The software update pushed on the home screen several weeks ago to update the camera, and some other items has caused my gauge cluster to flash a lot when using CarPlay GPS. In stead of the turn by turn on the cluster it flashes. I continues to have issue and causing me to lose power or significantly slow down and not able to accelerate in Atlanta traffic. I had just left my home and got up to about 20-25 MPH when my Jeep Wrangler Willy’s 4XE suddenly and abruptly came to a full stop causing the tires to lock up as well and screech to a stop then it shut down and I had to restart it. It jolted my upper body and head forward and could’ve been much more dangerous if I were on a busy road or if anyone were driving behind me. I took it to my local dealership and they were able to recreate the issue after driving it and it shut off just as it did for me. They brought it in and seem to have primarily done some software update but didn’t express much confidence in the repair. They just said there were no DCT’s but there was some software updates and that should fix it. They also claimed there were no recalls present on the vehicle which is even more scary. So the only way there fixing this if they even are fixing it is it already happened to you and put you in danger.

I went to drive it today and it had a full charge. Drove it to my office and put it on charge. Went to go home for lunch and it did not charge, but I had fuel and would figure it out later. Was driving on a 4 lane highway and a turtle popped up on the screen saying it was going to slow mode and turned off 5 seconds later going 55 mph. Had a message on the display saying put in in park, foot on the brake and press the start button. After I drifted to the redlight I did that and nothing. The EV battery was dead, I had 1/8 tank of fuel and would not even try to start. Just sitting at a light at a busy intersection. After 10 minutes and a green light I pushed the start button again and it moved about 15' to right in the middle of the intersection and did it again. All dash lights we on and the message saying press brake, put it in park and start it but literally nothing happens. Luckily a tow truck driver was in another lane and he knew how to pop a cover by the shifter to pull a strap that puts it in neutral as long as the strap is being pulled. So he was able to push me to the side of the road. I was only 1/4 mile away from my office, so I towed it back with another vehicle and put it on charge. Lights came on saying charging system failure, check charger. I called roadside and they towed it to the dealer and I included the charger. To note - I've had this vehicle about 3 months and many times trying to put it in electric mode it will usually say "Electric system temporarily available" Sometimes going down hills in it usually switches to electric mode, but when i get to the bottom I have 0 (zero) power until i push the pedal all the way down and it kicks over to gas mode.

This week, 200k jeeps (mine included) were recalled due to vehicles starting on fire from the charging. The recall states there is no fix at this time and to just not charge your vehicle. I paid much more for a hyrbid vehicle, and now unable to use it for safety reasons.

The engine is running rough and loses power when it turns on for the first time and speeding up around 6th gear. Also the 2nd gear takes about 3-5 sec to downshift and you lose the opportunity to step on the gas hard or it will slam into another gear. The lose of power and random shifting causes you to slow down and not able to get out of the way or drive well esp. on the highway. The jeep dealer wants to keep the car for 4 days to trouble shoot. No lights or warnings it constantly does this and seems there is a tuning or computer issue. The car only has 8000 miles on it.
