This is an EV . We use the regenerative braking to slow down. This car has both a front and rear dash cam. The car is about two and a half years old and has about 20,800 miles. We were approaching a red traffic light with several vehicles stopped in front of us. My partner was driving and had slowed to 8 mph, with her foot off the accelerator, advancing slowly towards the car in front of us when the vehicle experienced unanticipated, rapid acceleration. With quick reflexes, she was able brake hard and avoided a collision. Ten minutes later she was parking at our house, going 4 mph and it did it again, coming within four feet of the building. Neither time was she touching the accelerator, but the car accelerated like the accelerator was pressed to the floor. This is very dangerous.

On June 13, 2026, my 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 experienced a sudden and dangerous propulsion failure while in active motion. The vehicle had approximately 9,447 miles on it and was at 58% battery charge at the time of the incident. The vehicle was leased in January 2025 and has been serviced exclusively at the Hyundai dealership. While driving with two occupants, the vehicle abruptly lost all ability to accelerate. The dashboard displayed a critical warning: “Stop vehicle and check power supply” along with a red battery icon. This failure occurred without warning and immediately placed us in danger of being struck by surrounding traffic, as the vehicle could no longer maintain speed or respond to throttle input. I was able to coast the vehicle off the roadway. Shortly after stopping, the vehicle issued an additional warning stating that auxiliary functions were draining the battery. Within moments, the vehicle shut itself down completely. This left both occupants stranded in extreme heat (over 100°F) with no air conditioning, no ventilation, and no ability to restart or power the vehicle while waiting for rescue. This created a serious risk of heat-related medical distress in addition to the initial roadway hazard. The vehicle’s complete loss of propulsion followed by a full electrical shutdown represents a severe safety defect. At no point should an electric vehicle with more than half a charge and fewer than 10,000 miles lose propulsion during active driving or shut down all systems while occupants are inside. This incident posed a significant risk of collision, injury, or heat-related harm. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this failure mode, as it may indicate a broader defect affecting the propulsion or battery management systems of the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The vehicle is currently at the Hyundai dealership undergoing diagnostics and they confirmed they had difficulty jumping it to move it from where the tow truck had parked it on arrival.

I lease a 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 AWD. Prior to a planned trip, the vehicle displayed an electrical system warning. I contacted the dealership and was advised to bring it in. While driving approximately 5 miles to the dealership, the vehicle lost all power including hazard lights, leaving me stranded on a busy road. I contacted roadside assistance and the vehicle was towed to the dealership. The dealership confirmed the failure was caused by the ICCU (Integrated Charging Control Unit). The repair took approximately two weeks. The vehicle was unavailable during this time, requiring a rental car. Hyundai partially reimbursed rental costs but did not compensate for other losses incurred. The ICCU failure is a known widespread issue affecting the entire Hyundai/Kia E-GMP platform across multiple models and model years. As I began a drive cycle, I heard a pop sound and received the “check electric vehicle system” warning associated with ICCU failure. With ICCU failure, if I had continued to drive the 12V battery would have run to zero and the car would have died completely. Vehicle goes to dealer tomorrow for confirmation.

I'd rather not think about what might have happened if this had happened on a highway. The Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) is no longer working as it should. The problem has been confirmed by the dealer/manufacturer service station.

I was merging onto the highway. I got a warning that I needed to check my electrical system. I was able to back down the highway ramp and park on a side street. Within 20 minutes the car was fully dead and AAA needed to tow it to the dealer. The dealer confirmed that the ICCU needs a replacement. My family is lucky this happened in a place we could safely get to a side street. Had it happened 5 minutes later we would have been stranded on the highway with 2 small children.

While driving northbound on US-280 freeway, the vehicle experienced sudden deceleration with maximum speed limited to approximately 40 mph. The dashboard displayed a "Check Power Supply" warning. The vehicle required a tow to the dealership. Dealer diagnosis indicates likely ICCU (Integrated Charging Control Unit) failure. This is a known issue affecting multiple Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles, with numerous consumer reports of the same failure mode. The sudden loss of propulsion at highway speed created a significant safety hazard though we were able to make it off the freeway with hazards on. However shortly after exiting the vehicle further slowed and eventually died on the side of the road as did the hazard signals.

On January 31st, 2026, not long after starting a journey in my car, I got a “check electrical systems” warning. I was close to home so was able to turn around and drive home. Just before pulling into the driveway, the warning changed to a “power limited” warning. On Monday Feb 2nd, I had the car towed to my local dealership, where it has been since. The dealer confirmed that it was an issue with the ICCU component which is on back order to this day.

I was driving on a residential street, traveling about 25 miles per hour. I heard a loud popping sound from the back of the car and within seconds I started to lose power. I pulled over to the side of the road and my car was dead. No electrical system, I couldn't even power the locks. I waited for several hours to have it towed to the dealer where it sat for 29 days waiting for the part. It's the ICCU that failed. Had I been going at highway speeds, I very likely could have been in a life threatening accident. This is unacceptable for a car.

Routine Friday morning and just finished charging my 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 at Walmart. As I started my vehicle to finish my commute to work, the dreaded "Check electric vehicle system" warning light came on along with a red battery icon. There were no warning signs or anything that could have foretold what would be happening. I pulled into an empty parking stall and called the Hyundai dealer for advice. I was told not to drive the vehicle and get it towed to the dealership. After being diagnosed, my car will need a new ICCU and ICCU fuse. The dealership gave me no ETA as it often takes weeks to months to receive the parts from Korea. I was told Fontana Hyundai had 9 other cars with the same ICCU issue in line before mine. I was so glad it occurred in a parking lot and not on the freeway since a malfunction with the ICCU will basically cause the car to loose total power and control. This is definitely a huge concern and safety issue.

Vehicle displayed "Power limited" and slowed to a crawl, was able to drive less than a quarter mile to a safe place before it displayed "Stop vehicle and check power supply" then completely shut down. Diagnosed as ICCU failure by the Hyundai Dealer service technician, with the parts on backorder and no ETA for the 15 or so other Hyundai Ioniq 5's with the same failed ICCU waiting at the same dealership, in front of me.

As the dealership is close - about five miles from my home, on residential roads - I decided to drive there. The car lost power very quickly and then died in the road shortly after leaving my driveway. Thankfully I wasn't on a busy street or an intersection and was able to safely get it to the side of the road, but if it had died while driving at a higher speed it would have been very dangerous.

Car was immediately backed into driveway and completely died shortly after the initial power loss and had to be towed to dealer. Dealer diagnosed an ICCU failure. Warning lights activated at the moment the car lost power. Had this occurred on a highway or in heavier traffic the power loss and speed with which the car went from fully operational to dead could have had catastrophic consequences.

This happened after Level 2 charging to 100% and then driving one mile in 25° weather. The car was towed to the dealer.

At approximately 10pm on Saturday night with temps in the single digits and a large snowstorm (that would cripple much of the US for several days) just about to hit, the 1.5 year old vehicle failed completely. Propulsion battery 81% charged, started normally, then gave "check electrical system" warning which upon search can be due to a low 12v battery; call AAA and spouse (live 2hrs away). Began to drive towards a station two blocks away, thinking plugging in may help system warm and/or recharge 12v battery. Car goes into limp mode on road, then dies in four-lane road. Use portable battery jumper, draining it into the 12v battery and able to limp-mode out of traffic and into Walmart parking lot entrance where dies again. With bystander help, push the vehicle across parking lot to chargers; vehicle in total electrical failure w/random lights flashing (tail, dash, etc.) and no command-functions (couldn't shift into park, open charging port). Charged 12v battery from an ICE car 30 minutes w/restoration of command function, but nothing more than limp mode. AAA still hours ETA. Personally swap 12v battery purchased from Walmart w/restoration of power, but abnormal function (lane assist forcing wheel, menus malfunctioning) & warnings remaining. Drive vehicle to -thankfully- nearby dealership before another failure. Abandon vehicle & wait for pickup by spouse, drive last hour in a snowstorm. Very lucky I wasn't stranded on the highway, hit and killed in a snowstorm. Very lucky I wasn't hit and killed in the road where it died. Very lucky I called for help early, wasn't stranded more than 20 minutes in dangerous-cold, didn't wreck in snowstorm getting home. Very lucky the malfunctioning systems did not steer/force me into another vehicle or pedestrian, causing injury or death. Dealership confirmed (longstanding and very well-known) failure of ICCU module that Hyundai refuses to properly address. These are unsafe vehicles, hand-grenades on a timer.

As we drove toward the highway to begin our journey home in our 2024 RWD Ioniq 5 with our entire family and luggage in the vehicle, we received a "Check Electric Vehicle System" warning and immediately pulled over and called Hyundai Roadside Assistance. They initially were going to send someone to jump the car, assuming it was an ICE, but once we said it was an EV, they said they didn't have the equipment to jump an EV. We then spoke to Hyundai Customer Care, and we reported that we received the "Check Electric Vehicle System" warning. The HCC rep said that she did not see any issues with the vehicle on her end, so we would be OK to drive it. We specified that we had a 1.5 hour drive home and asked her explicitly if we would be OK to drive this length of time with this warning and make it home? She again said that we would be OK to drive it. After getting off the phone with her, we proceeded onto the highway and within about 2 minutes, received the "Stop Vehicle and Check Power Supply" warning and then, within a few seconds, began to lose power. This was extremely dangerous, as we were going down a hill on a highway frequented by semi trucks in the rain. Fortunately, we were still able to turn on the hazard lights and coast into a nearby hotel parking lot. As we were losing power, we were afraid we would not be able to get out of the car because all the doors were locked and the windows were up due to the rain, so we quickly unlocked two of the doors as soon as we pulled into the parking lot. One of us then had to stay with the car at all times because we couldn't lock or unlock the car. We eventually had the car towed to the Hyundai dealer closest to us who determined that the ICCU and fuse had failed and needed to be replaced, but they could only replace them with new parts of the same design that could potentially fail again; Hyundai does not yet have a fix for the ICCU failure.

Multiple 12v batteries, the battery management system, and ICCU have all failed on my Ioniq 5. During my 13-month lease, this vehicle has been inoperable for more than 30 cumulative days due to the same recurring defect. The vehicle was taken to an authorized Hyundai dealership multiple times, but the defect was repeatedly misdiagnosed and not corrected, resulting in continued failures and extended loss of use. The defect causes sudden loss of power and complete vehicle shutdown, including the inability to restart the vehicle. If this occurs while driving, it creates a serious safety hazard by eliminating propulsion, power-assisted steering, and braking assistance. The vehicle may become disabled in traffic or at intersections, increasing the risk of a collision, injury, or stranding occupants in unsafe conditions.

Warning light came on stating that we needed to have the electrical system checked asap. Vehicle would not charge from Level 2 charger. It needed to be towed from our house to the dealer to get its ICCU replaced since there was a risk that it would no longer power vehicle on 4 mile drive to dealer for repair. Problem was fixed in one week by Roseville Hyundai by replacing the ICCU in the vehicle

Car went into “Power Limited” turtle mode and speed dropped down to 25mph without warning. Was able to limp the mile and a half home but glad I was not driving on the interstate at high speed at the time. Dealer confirms ICCU failed and needs replaced, part backordered and no ETA on when it will be back in stock.

ICCU failed while driving. This resulted in the vehicle going into limp mode while driving, cause the speed to slow dramatically and rendering it unable to be driven. Luckily, this happened close to home and I was able to get a tow truck to bring it to the dealership. Otherwise I would have been stranded. This problem is know, and was repair by Hyundai but there is no true fix as of yet, which continues to put drivers at risk. At the time of the failure the warning light "check vehicle electrical system" and "power limited" came on.
