On June 13, 2026, my 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 experienced a sudden and dangerous propulsion failure while in active motion. The vehicle had approximately 9,447 miles on it and was at 58% battery charge at the time of the incident. The vehicle was leased in January 2025 and has been serviced exclusively at the Hyundai dealership. While driving with two occupants, the vehicle abruptly lost all ability to accelerate. The dashboard displayed a critical warning: “Stop vehicle and check power supply” along with a red battery icon. This failure occurred without warning and immediately placed us in danger of being struck by surrounding traffic, as the vehicle could no longer maintain speed or respond to throttle input. I was able to coast the vehicle off the roadway. Shortly after stopping, the vehicle issued an additional warning stating that auxiliary functions were draining the battery. Within moments, the vehicle shut itself down completely. This left both occupants stranded in extreme heat (over 100°F) with no air conditioning, no ventilation, and no ability to restart or power the vehicle while waiting for rescue. This created a serious risk of heat-related medical distress in addition to the initial roadway hazard. The vehicle’s complete loss of propulsion followed by a full electrical shutdown represents a severe safety defect. At no point should an electric vehicle with more than half a charge and fewer than 10,000 miles lose propulsion during active driving or shut down all systems while occupants are inside. This incident posed a significant risk of collision, injury, or heat-related harm. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this failure mode, as it may indicate a broader defect affecting the propulsion or battery management systems of the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The vehicle is currently at the Hyundai dealership undergoing diagnostics and they confirmed they had difficulty jumping it to move it from where the tow truck had parked it on arrival.

For the second time, the integrated control unit, ICCU, has failed to this is AFTER being replaced under the recall. The recall solution has not fixed the problem, and is a fake bandaid on a problem that means cars will totally stop working in the middle of the road. This is totally unsafe and unacceptable.

I was driving and the car gave an electrical system warning, slowed, and thereafter would not go above about 20mph. Fortunately this happened on a local, low speed limit street. I'd rather not think about what might have happened if this had happened on a highway. The Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) is no longer working as it should. The problem has been confirmed by the dealer/manufacturer service station.

The vehicle experienced a sudden failure of the 12V battery while on the road. The car stopped completely and became inoperable. At the time of failure, there were no tail lights or proper warning indicators working, which created a very dangerous situation, especially in traffic. I was stuck on the road for about one hour waiting for a tow truck. During that time, other vehicles were honking and passing by, increasing the risk of an accident. The vehicle had to be jump-started before it could be moved. Details: What component failed: The 12V battery system failed unexpectedly. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Safety risk: Loss of power caused the vehicle to stop on the road with no tail lights, putting my safety and others at serious risk. Reproduction/confirmation: Issue was temporarily resolved with a jump-start, but this is a known issue reported by other owners as well. Inspection: The vehicle has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer or dealer after this incident. Warnings/symptoms: There were no clear warning lights or messages before the failure. The issue happened suddenly without notice.

While driving I received the infamous "Stop vehicle and check power supply" warning, and it was then inoperable, needed a tow to the dealer for ICCU replacement. I can't believe you terminated your initial investigation into this in 2023 because they did a recall (which my car received). That recall did not fix the issue. It is March 2026 and Ioniq 5 and other models with the same electric system are dying on the road at the same rate as before. There is a large percentage of failed cars, and every failure is dangerous. This is a huge safety issue, and is not receiving adequate oversight by the NHTSA.

I was merging onto the highway. I got a warning that I needed to check my electrical system. I was able to back down the highway ramp and park on a side street. Within 20 minutes the car was fully dead and AAA needed to tow it to the dealer. The dealer confirmed that the ICCU needs a replacement. My family is lucky this happened in a place we could safely get to a side street. Had it happened 5 minutes later we would have been stranded on the highway with 2 small children.

ICCU failed after 14k miles. Car suddenly went into "turtle" mode (displayed on dash), car could only go 10 mph and my wife had to pull the car off the street asap and was a very scary experience. Dealer has confirmed the ICCU failure and given me a loaner vehicle. No eta on when the part can be fixed, just that it's current status is back order.

ICCU failure: confirmed by dealership, submitting for your records - while driving the morning of 2/11/26 in Evansville, IN a warning message appeared on the dashboard stating 'Check Electric Vehicle System' followed by a rapid deceleration. Luckily there was not a vehicle behind me as they would have rear ended me. This failure occurred without warning and presented a significant safety hazard, leaving the vehicle stranded in traffic until I was able to restart it. Vehicle went in to turtle mode upon restart, would not go over 20mph at first then I stopped the car, restarted it again, it would move for 15-20 seconds before going in to turtle mode again and now it will not go over 10mph - interestingly, when I would stop and put it in reverse, the vehicle would move 10-20' and then come to a very abrupt stop as the entire vehicle shut off - had to tow the vehicle to the Hyundai dealership in Evansville Indiana where the ICCU was confirmed has having failed

An appointment was scheduled to inspect the vehicle. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 17,000.

The ICCU on our 2024 IONIQ 5 (VIN: [XXX] ) failed on January 4, 2026, along with the 12‑volt battery. The vehicle had only 5,034 miles on it and was just 12 months and 14 days past our purchase date of December 21, 2024. At the time of the incident, the car was charged to 79% when it suddenly entered turtle mode. We were close enough to home to return safely, but the following day the vehicle had to be towed to the dealership. The dealer informed us that the car had completely lost power and that both the ICCU and the 12‑volt battery had failed. We have now been waiting five weeks without a replacement part. We have also learned that Hyundai has not yet implemented a design fix for the underlying cause of ICCU failures, despite widespread reports from owners. We consider this a significant safety concern. Had this failure occurred on a highway—especially in sub‑zero temperatures—it could have put us and other drivers at serious risk. Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) failure at 16,000 miles in 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5. Car was turned on and started to drive and sign said Power System Failure. Then it said Stop Vehicle Immediately. Car would not accelerate but I was close to home. I had it towed to Hyundai and they said it is an ICCU failure and they have no ETA when the part will come in.

ICCU failed while driving. This resulted in the vehicle going into limp mode while driving, cause the speed to slow dramatically and rendering it unable to be driven. Luckily, this happened close to home and I was able to get a tow truck to bring it to the dealership. Otherwise I would have been stranded. This problem is know, and was repair by Hyundai but there is no true fix as of yet, which continues to put drivers at risk. At the time of the failure the warning light "check vehicle electrical system" and "power limited" came on.

Hyundai is ignoring the fact that many Ioniq 5 have an ICCU defect that happens without warning and can leave you stranded with a bricked car that you can’t drive. They have a software recall for it that I had performed at the dealer. This did not solve the problem because it failed yesterday and I was stranded far from home. They continue to put this same part in the 2025 model. I have a 2024. Brand new cars are having the same problem which requires the whole unit to be replaced with the same unit that can go bad. I know people who it has happened to multiple times. They need to issue a recall that replaces the entire unit with a redesigned one. Not the same exact part. Everyone of these cars is a ticking time bomb that can leave a person stranded.

The car made a loud popping noise and immediately started displaying electrical system fault errors. The car propulsion stopped within 15 seconds and was not able to be moved after. I was on the freeway and just barely made it over to the side. Car was not able to be towed by a regular tow truck because the electrical system was gone and the car was not able to be shifted into neutral. Jump starting the battery did nothing. Car was sent to the dealer who confirmed that the car sustained an ICCU failure which controls the entire battery electric system. The ICCU had to be replaced. There is already a mandatory recall on the vehicle regarding the ICCU. The recall was to check the status and confirm that the ICCU was working properly and in good condition. I had this recall done BEFORE the ICCU failed, so even though the recall check was performed, the ICCU still failed and put me in a very dangerous situation. The car is 6 months old and has 6200 miles on the odometer.

The contact’s wife depressed the accelerator pedal; however, the vehicle shifted to first or second gear and failed to accelerate above 20 MPH. The contact stated there were no warnings illuminated. The contact stated that his wife pulled into a parking lot and the vehicle lost electrical power and was unable to be restarted. The contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and informed the contact that the vehicle had had a failure of a part that was on a national back order. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 11,000.

On March 22, 2025, our 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 suffered a sudden, complete loss of power while driving at night, after receiving Hyundai’s recall service in January. While driving on city roads, the car displayed “Check Battery” errors despite the main EV battery showing ~75% charge. After stopping, we had AAA install a new 12V battery, which did not resolve the issue. Minutes later, while crossing a Y-shaped highway interchange, the car lost the ability to accelerate, leaving us stranded in a dangerous area. Hyundai Roadside Assistance gave an 89-minute ETA and failed to dispatch a tow capable of transporting our family of three. We were forced to call our insurance to tow the vehicle to safety. The car is now inoperable at a dealership. Hyundai has not followed up. This is a major safety concern — involving either the 12V system or software post-recall — and could impact other vehicles. When driving in i-Pedal, which is a "one pedal driving option", sometimes after pausing the car rolls backs several inches. This appears to be a defect with the powetrain, regenerative braking engine, or otherwise. Hyundai's dealership has been advised of this issue; they have escalated this internally. A car in drive forward should never due to electrical or software reasons be told to move backwards -- which is what is happening here.
