What 107 owners told NHTSA about the 2017 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque (convertible)

On [XXX], my 2017 Land Rover Range Rover HSE Td6 diesel (VIN: [XXX] ) suffered a complete, catastrophic engine failure without warning at approximately 70 mph on [XXX] . My wife and our two infant sons (ages [XXX] and [XXX] ) were passengers. There were no prior warning lights or symptoms. The engine stopped instantaneously, eliminating power steering and power brakes while I was overtaking a semi-truck in the passing lane. We narrowly reached the shoulder safely. The odometer read 79,018 miles — inside both limits of the federally mandated 8-year/80,000-mile emissions warranty under 40 CFR §85.2103. The vehicle was 7 years old at time of failure. Hoehn Land Rover Carlsbad diagnosed complete engine failure caused by timing chain guide failure — a known defect pattern in the Ingenium diesel engine. The service manager stated failures like this "aren't that rare" with these engines. Repair estimate: $28,000–$30,000. Jaguar Land Rover North America (Case #[XXX]) denied the warranty claim entirely, offering $800, without ever evaluating the claim under the active federal emissions warranty. Their denial cited only the expired extended CPO warranty and a maintenance gap — neither of which constitutes valid grounds for denying an emissions warranty claim under 40 CFR §85.2103(d), as the manufacturer cannot demonstrate the maintenance gap caused a documented design defect. This failure pattern is documented in JLR Technical Service Bulletins LTB00735 and SSM74184. Land Rover Korea issued a recall for the same timing chain failure in 2020. At just a little over 58k miles the vehicle started making metal noises while driving. The vehicle will jump into neutral while driving and this was very scary! There are no warning lights or any error codes. This was checked and confirmed by a LandRover dealership in Roanoke- no fault codes. I didnt drive for another few months. Next drive was from VA to KY and the vehicle did the same thing on the highway, I was able to pull over after having a panic attack and almost being hit by other vehicles that were moving! I didnt drive it for another few months. Drove the vehicle 3 weeks ago, the noises and the shift in neutral happened again and I had to pull off the side of the road. This time gearbox fault light came on. This is very scary, this vehicle should be high tech enough to show error codes or warning lights and absolutley nothing from diagnostic check. Now, I am nowhere close to a land rover dealership, called the manufacturer several times about recalls and or problems. I was brushed off and told there is nothing they can do. This is not only frustrating: This is dangerous! I had my family in this car and we could have been in a terrible accident due to no warning. The local mechanic still shows no stored error codes or issues. This is a danger and I have found this same issue in many forums. This should be a recall and the manufacturer should stand behind their work.

Had Range Rover Deisel towed to " Jaguar Land Rover of Newport 3 times, (9494854642 Yulissa) 2 times "fixed" only to dangerously recurring, this time they have had it 4 months, with 4 diagnosis and failed repairs, and test failures. I'm affraid to drive it home when they say maybe they fixed it again . This vehicle has had 9 check engine lights and unsafe repairs in 3 years I have 50 texts and 6 repair bills, but I don't know how to download them

AFTER EACH FAILURE, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO LAND ROVER PARAMUS (405 NJ-17, PARAMUS, NJ 07652) WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED FOR EACH FAILURE. ON ONE OCCASION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE AT A COMPLETE STOP, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING WITH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL DEPRESSED. DUE TO THE FAILURE, THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE SAME DEALER WHERE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED AGAIN. RECENTLY, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE STALLING FAILURE RECURRED, AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE SAME DEALER WHERE IT REMAINED IN THE DEALER POSSESSION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,643.

I HAD BEEN COMPLAINING OF NOISES AND A POOR PERFORMANCE FOR MONTHS WITH NO RESOLUTION. THE CAR SAT AT THE DEALERSHIP OF PURCHASE FOR 2 DAYS WITHOUT AN ANSWER BEFORE BEING MOVED TO ANOTHER DEALED THAT HAS STATED IT NEEDS A GEARBOX MODULE.

I WAS DRIVING ON THE SOUTHERN STATE PARKWAY IN NEW YORK DURING RUSH HOUR. DRIVING APPROX 10MPH AT A STEADY PACE AND HAD BEEN IN THE CAR FOR ABOUT AN HOUR. ALL OF A SUDDEN MY 2017 EVOQUE STALLED OUT WHEN I PRESSED THE GAS PEDAL. I CAME TO A STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TRAFFIC LANE, AS THERE WASN'T ENOUGH TIME TO PULL OFF THE ROAD. ONCE I SHIFTED THE SHIFT KNOB INTO PARK, THE KNOB DISAPPEARED INTO THE CENTER CONSOLE AS PICTURED. NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS WERE MADE TO RESTART THE CAR WITH NO LUCK AND NO ERROR INDICATION ON THE DASH. THE CAR WOULD NOT START AND THE SHIFT KNOB WOULD NOT POP UP UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON, THE SHIFT KNOB REMAINED DOWN. ONCE THE TOW TRUCK ARRIVED, THE DRIVER AND I COULD NOT SHIFT THE CAR OUT OF PARK TO NEUTRAL TO GET THE 2017 EVOQUE ON THE FLATBED. THE CAR HAD TO BE DRAGGED ONTO THE FLATBED IN PARK DUE TO THE INACCESSIBLE SHIFTER AND FAILED ENGINE/POWERTRAIN. THERE IS NO AVAILABLE ACCESSIBLE OVERRIDE TO UNLOCK OR RELEASE THIS SHIFTER. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD, NOT ONLY FOR THE POWERTRAIN STOPPING WITHOUT WARNING, BUT THE SHIFT KNOB DESCENDING INTO THE CENTER CONSOLE AND NOT ALLOWING THE GEAR TO BE CHANGED.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO HENNESSY JAGUAR NORTH ATLANTA (1505 MANSELL RD, ALPHARETTA, GA 30009, (770) 587-2000) TO BE DIAGNOSED, BUT THE MECHANIC COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE FAILURES. AFTER FURTHER INQUIRIES, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED OF SEVERAL FAILURE CODES INCLUDING THE AIR BAG CONTROL CIRCUIT OPEN FAULT, RETRAIN CONTROL MODULE FAULT, AND ABS CONTROL MODULE FAULT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE READER SHOWED A TOTAL OF 28 DTC FAULT CODES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS ALSO INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 22,000.

THEY INDICATED THAT THE COMPUTER REPORTS INDICATE A MAJOR PROBLEM OCCURED BUT THEY ARE UNABLE TO RECREATE IT.
