My wife was driving our Ioniq 5 on the freeway. She received a message on the dash about the electrical system (probably ICCU failure), and then the car limited itself ("turtle mode") so that the max speed was 20mph. A minute or two later it slowed down even further to 10mph. She was able to get off the freeway safely.

I am reporting a safety-related defect involving unintended vehicle movement on my Hyundai Ioniq 5 (Model Year 2023, SEL AWD). Observed behavior: With the vehicle in Drive and the Auto Hold function active (indicated by the white “AUTO HOLD” indicator in the instrument cluster), I brought the vehicle to a complete stop by pressing the brake pedal. Auto Hold engaged (text now green), the vehicle remained stationary, and I removed my foot from the brake. After approximately three minutes of remaining stopped, a driver-assistance system error message appeared on the instrument cluster. At that point, Auto Hold disengaged (the “AUTO HOLD” indicator disappeared), and the vehicle began to creep forward on its own. I did not command acceleration, did not press the accelerator pedal, and did not intentionally release the brake. The movement was unexpected and created a safety risk. The first occurrence happened in a school drop-off line with the vehicle stopped near other vehicles and pedestrians. I have since reproduced the behavior and captured it on video. Related observations: Similar driver-assistance system errors have occurred while the vehicle was in Park and in Drive, with or without Auto Hold active. In those cases, the vehicle did not move because it was either mechanically locked or I had my foot on the brake. In all cases, Auto Hold deactivated. Safety concern: This behavior raises concerns about the reliability of Auto Hold and its interaction with braking and driver-assistance systems, particularly after the vehicle has been stationary for an extended period. Unintended forward movement presents a significant safety hazard. I am reporting this issue for investigation of potential defects in software, sensors, or control logic. Video evidence is available.

My 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 suffered a sudden Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) failure that put me in grave danger. As I left my workplace in the evening, I heard a “pop” sound and got the dashboard warning, “Check Electrical Vehicle System.” It was unclear what the warning meant. I had 65% charge left at that point. As I began driving, the gas pedal “stuck,” not allowing me to accelerate past 25 mph, and it felt like the car was dragging. I did not know what was happening. The “Check Electrical Vehicle System” warning returned but gave no indication of whether it was safe to drive or what to check in the electrical system. Driving very slowly, I made it out of the military base (my workplace), parked outside of a closed establishment, and called my husband. He told me to drive further up the road to a well-lit shopping area. I exited the parking lot and entered the intersection of a four-lane highway – and suddenly, when I was in the center about to turn in the direction of traffic, the car stopped and would not respond to the gas pedal. I could not accelerate and was stuck in the middle of the highway. After several frantic pushes on the gas pedal, I was able to coast downward to the shoulder and exit the vehicle. My husband and I had brought the car to the dealer in February 2025 for the December 20, 2024 ICCU recall (NHTSA Recall 24V-868, Hyundai Recall 272). The dealer merely inspected the car and updated its ICCU software. Per Hyundai guidance, it did not replace the ICCU itself. It is taking no apparent steps to do so for 2023 Ioniq 5 owners, leaving us in danger. The seriousness of this problem is compounded by the lack of adequate warning when it occurs out of the blue. The generic “Check Electrical Vehicle System” indicator on the dashboard did not indicate what precisely in the electrical system to check, how serious the issue was, or how much of the 12-volt battery power was left. Hyundai must rectify this issue before others are hurt.

The vehicle is under an active federal safety recall, which under 49 U.S.C. § 30118–30120 requires dealers and manufacturers to repair recalled vehicles promptly, without regard to profitability or cost. Despite repeated written requests, Pedder Hyundai (Poway, CA) refused to perform recall repairs, obstructed resolution, blocked corporate contact, and threatened to tow the vehicle illegally at my expense within 48 hours, demonstrating reckless disregard for consumer safety and federal law. A police report documenting criminal endangerment, conversion, and aggravated consumer endangerment is pending, and the lender of the vehicle has been notified of breach of contract. These issues appear systemic, affecting multiple vehicles of this model, and have resulted in: Frequent, unexpected towing with surprise expenses and downtime Significant risk of injury or death due to power/control loss Repeated failures despite warranty and recall obligations I request NHTSA investigate immediately, ensure recall repairs are completed promptly, and take any action necessary to protect public safety. Vehicle stopped responding to all inputs while cruising on the highway. Vehicle was charged and running fine up until that point, for about 40 minutes of continuous driving. Accelerator pedal, regen paddle shifters, cruise control buttons all would not work and display was unresponsive. Vehicle slowly lost speed as if it was shifted into neutral, forcing us to pull over to the side of the road. Turning vehicle off, waiting for a minute, and turning it back on restored functions. Vehicle malfunction occurred right after a busy intersection on LA highways and we were able to make it to the shoulder, but if it had happened just 1-2 minutes earlier, we would have been in a lot of traffic merging in and out of lanes at significant speeds. There were no warning lights, messages, or auditory alerts during the occurrence. Vehicle simply lost all power. When I took it into the dealer for inspection the next day, the service staff were unable to find any issues or errors during diagnostics. Battery health was in the green and vehicle checked out fine and was released to me after a thorough inspection.

Several days ago, the twelve volt battery on my car was replaced because the car just suddenly died overnight while sitting in my garage. They told me that the battery needed to be replaced when I went to the dealer. They replaced it and now less than a week later, I was driving on the highway and suddenly the car Slowed to no more than 27 miles an hour with warnings about the electrical system not working and a problem with the battery. I had to put my flashers on while I was driving down the highway until I was able to pull off and have the car towed to another dealer that was closer to the scene. Not sure what they are going to say, but obviously this was very scary as well as a nuisance.

Incident occurred when head-in parking in a space pointed into an stores exterior wall. There were no parking/wheel stops, just pavement then wall. No adjacent cars. I was decelerating with foot completely off accelerator and over the brake pedal. The car is an EV and was in 3rd level of regenerative braking, slowing down quickly. As I completed the turn into the space and began straitening the wheel, the car suddenly and rapidly accelerated and crashed into the wall. The only likely explanation I have is that I inadvertently pressed the Driving Assist button with my right thumb or hand while turning the steering wheel, which would have activated Smart Cruise Control, and, if the necessary conditions were met, set the minimum speed to 30 km/hr. The car manual states: "If your vehicle speed is between 0 - 20 mph (0 - 30 km/h) when you press the Driving Assist ( ) button, the Smart Cruise Control speed will be set to 20 mph (30km/h)." The Foward Collision-Avoidance Assist was set to Active Assist, which should have applied the brake to stop from colliding with the wall, but instead the car accelerated. (Note, the parking assist feature does not usually recognize head-in parking.) The car has two Driving Assist settings: Based on Drive Mode and Based on Driving Style. If the latter is selected, three additional features are set on sliding scales: Distance (close to far), Acceleration (slow to fast), Response Speed (slow to quick). These three settings are adjusted automatically based on the car's interpretation of the driver's driving style, or they can be manually overriden. I have never changed these settings. Post-incident I checked the setting and it was set to Based on Driving Style with Acceleration=Fast. Concerns: Is Driving Assist to easy to inadvertently activate? Should Driving Assist not activate at very slow speeds and not auto-set to 30k/h? Why did Forward Collision-Avoidance not activate? Drive Assist should not default to Based on Driving Style.

When parking in a supermarket parking lot I slowly approached the space while braking. As I turned left into the space and released the brake pedal to allow the car to slowly roll into the space as I always do, the car surged as if someone floored the accelerator. I veered left to avoid a head on collision with the parked car facing me and went diagonally between the right front fender of that car and the left front fender of the car parked in the space to my left. I sideswiped both sides of my car and damaged the front fenders of both cars before I was able to apply the brake and bring the car to a stop. There was a mother with her two young children loading groceries into the car in front of me. Fortunately I avoided hitting anyone, but the witnessed the accident. I was in shock. My car suffered $25 in damages. There is absolutely no way I accidentally applied the accelerator, and if I had I would never have floored it! The car malfunctioned. I reported this incident to Hyundai also. They supposedly were sending someone to inspect the car at the auto body repair center.

The car loses power, slows down dramatically, and will not respond to the accelerator pedal. This failure has happened twice. The first time I was driving at about 40MPH on a side street when the car started slowing down with no warning and limped along at about 20MPH. I could not get it to move faster so I put my flashers on and made my way to the side of the street, pulled off of the road and shut the car off. When I restarted the car it drove normally. I reported the failure to Hyundai and they had never heard of this happening. They kept the car for 2 days and couldn't replicate the problem. That was about 2 months ago. Yesterday, 3/4/24, I was on the freeway going about 74MPH using the smart cruise control. I had just changed lanes when the car lost power and I got the message, "Smart cruise conditions not met." My speed dropped to the low 40's as other cars were whipping past me. Even though I floored the accelerator I got no response. I started the flashers, made my way to the right lane and got off on an exit ramp. I pulled off to the side of the ramp, parked the car and turned it off. Once again, when I restarted the car it performed normally. This is very dangerous! I could have easily been rear ended by another, faster car on the freeway since I slowed down so quickly without braking lights lighting. I brought it back to the dealer again today and they have kept it to run diagnostics. I don't expect that they will find any problem this time either.

Driving the vehicle on the highway for longer than 60 miles at highway speeds the vehicle goes into “power limited” mode and a turtle pops up on the screen. You are unable to accelerate the car and once this happens you have to leave the car off for at least 5 minutes and then not drive above 65mph again or it will keep happening over and over. After taking it to the shop Hyundai Corporate said we need to drive the car again to see if they had fixed it. Approximately 65 miles into the trip it happened again and this time I was almost rear ended and cars were swerving around me on the shoulder to avoid crashing into me. Hyundai is saying that they cannot reproduce the issue but they are not driving the car on the highway for more than 60 miles. The safety of not only myself and my family is at risk as well as other people on the highway behind and next to us. The vehicle is currently at the dealership and they said there are no error codes so they don’t know what’s wrong. The only warning that popped up said “power limited” with a turtle.

When driving my new Hyundai ionic 5, the dashboard display is set up such that when I am in my preferred seating position, and my hands at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel, I cannot see the spedometer reading. I basically don't know how fast I'm going and less I change my hand position or move my head. This requires a fair more amount of time for me to take my attention off the road. This is not an isolated incident. I have asked my friends, who range in height from 5'2 to 6 ft 3 to do the same thing. They all report the same problem when they are in their preferred seating position. I am also noted many complaints about the same issue on the ionic 5 internet boards. This problem is caused solely by Hyundai's choice of a main display layout. This is the way it is laid out from the factory, and there is no way to change the speedometer position on the main display as a user.

HELP! I now regret that I bought a Hyundai Ioniq 5. I hoped the recent campaign would fix my problem, but I think it is now worse. While driving my speed drops 3 to 4 miles per hour, then the car lurches forward to regain my speed. At first I thought it was when using cruise. Now the car does it on the highway even when not using cruise. When it starts dropping the speed, the accelerator is not responsive. I have to wait for the car to slow completely down before the throttle will respond. I do not notice the problem around town. It seems to cruise fine for about 50 miles and then begin to slow and speed up out of my control. I think it is a safety hazard. It certainly drives me and my passengers crazy. PLEASE DO SOMETHING!!!

Driving on the highway, my car will suddenly lose power momentarily and the speed drop 3-5 mph. My accelerator is unresponsive. Then the car will accelerate quickly with a jerk to accelerate to the set speed. May occur on level ground but often occurs at the bottom of a hill. I have no control during this loss of power.

While driving on the interstate my 2023 Ioniq 5 SEL RWD experienced a failure with the front radar system stating that it was blocked. In reality there was nothing physically blocking the system which was verified on multiple pullovers to check the front of the vehicle. This caused the critical forward safety functions, HDA system, lane change assist functions, regeneration system, and smart cruise control to all be disabled. The car is available for inspection upon request and I have video of the car displaying the fault messages during the trip as it happened on multiple occasions.

brake lights do not come on when the car is in regenerative braking or driving mode and the driver is touching the gas pedal. Drivers following the car are not aware the car is actually braking not coasting. This is causing a rearending hazard. Mfr needs to correct issues so brake lights come on when car is in regenerative braking mode and the car is deaccellerating regardless of gas pedal activity

The Ioniq 5 when using level 2 regen, level 3 regen, and i-pedal (one pedal driving), does not turn on the break light when decelerating, even if coming to a full stop unless the driver removes their foot completely from the pedal or hits the break pedal. These driving modes allow the driver to perform regenerative breaking almost to a complete stop without turning on the break lights and warning other drivers behind you. With i-pedal specifically, the driver can 100% perform all stop and go traffic maneuvers without using the break and never have the break lights activate. This appears to be the default behavior of all Ioniq 5 vehicles and is controlled via software. The vehicle does not appear to measure rate of deceleration so even if the driver were to decelerate rapidly, the brakes would not activate. The Ioniq 5 offers a multi-level regenerative braking system, which slows the car down to varying degrees when letting off the accelerator pedal. While these systems work well to increase efficiency, the behaviour of the brake lights while in use is concerning. Very often the car is slowing considerably, enough to be akin to light braking, but the brake lights do not activate. This can be full let off the accelerator pedal and slowing with not brakes, or with a partial lift (especially on higher regen levels), where the vehicle is obviously slowing but the brake lights do not activate. This has been talked about on various forums and some review videos, and I expect this is not the first complaint placed about this issue. So far it has not caused a problem with my vehicle, but I have had to alter my driving habits to account for this, and it at times renders some of the vehicles technology dangerous to use, despite that technology being added to the car as a benefit to the driver under most conditions.
