What 1,362 owners told NHTSA about the 2014 Ford F-150 Supercab Diesel

While driving down the highway, the transmission line rapidly failed and caused the vehicle to stop the motor. This was a sudden and rapid loss of transmission fluid and we were very lucky to be able to control the vehicle over to the side of the road. There were ZERO indicator lights to indicate a transmission fluid leak or issue prior to this sudden issue. When researching online, a Ford Certified Technician confirms that there is one VERY specific place on the transmission lines that ALWAYS breaks on the 6R80 transmissions. It is where the line bends upward to an aluminium quick connect that has failed and does fail on a LOT of these vehicles. Photographic evidence sent to me by my mechanic proved that my lines failed in the exact same place. We were extremely lucky we were able to get to the side of the road safely.

The mechanic replaced the throttle body and motor. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was filed. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. While traveling at varying rates of speed, the transmission will shift on its own from 6th gear down to 2nd gear. This issue locks up the back tires while traveling at a high rate of speed and therefore is a huge safety issue. Especially since this happened with my children and wife in the vehicle. This issue has also started to cause multiple other features to not work including the speedometer from time to time. The check engine light does not resister this as a problem and it took Ford lots of convincing of what the actual problem was. There are no warning as to when the issue happens. It is intermittent and seems to have a hard time figuring out what gear the transmission should be in based on the speed of travel. This is a HUGE safety issue as I can be driving a high rate of speed and it downshifts without warning or I can be at a stop light and lose all power to the transmission and the vehicle will not move. Only the rpm’s will increase but the vehicle does not seem to have power from the power train system. It has been taken to Ford several months ago. They diagnosed the issue. There was a recall for this exact issue for models 2010-2013. My vehicle was 1 month out of recall. This is an issue seeing as it is the same exact problem the previous models are having but the recall only extended to models up to 2013. The dealership has given me the run around and not returned my calls for service for several months.

This make and model is having the exact same 6 speed transmission issues as earlier recalls. The final straw was when the truck failed to register the speed and slowly crept into oncoming traffic at night, while I turned left. It bucks and shifts hard at neighborhood and highway speeds. More often than not, it is a down speed shift and aggressive, whiplash buck. I lose control of the vehicle and the speedometer goes to 0 even at highway speeds. I called into the hotline and made a case- Case ID 11514803 but I haven't heard anything. That replacement part is on back order for a year + so my truck is unsafe and inoperable.

The rear doors on the truck would not open. Ford reports that it is a "wear and tear" issue b/c the piece at the end of the cable that pulls the latch to open the door is plastic. My concern is not being able to open the doors if there were people (perhaps a baby in a car seat), in the back seat and there was an accident. It seems to me that it is a simple engineering fix. My complaint to Ford went nowhere. There are several videos on YouTube about this problem so I suspect it is a fairly common problem.

I was going to get some lunch and I noticed a low brake fluid message was on. So I popped the hood to check fluid level and sure enough it was. I went to auto zone purchased some fluid and filled the reservoir and all seemed fine, but before I could get back to the office the message low brake fluid appeared again. Again I filled the reservoir with fluid at the end of my shift,the message went away and I headed home. As preceded home the message appeared again and I had to purchase more fluid and repeatedly filled the reservoir to make it home . After I got home I looked around the vehicle for leaks and there was none. I explained what happened to my mechanic and he told me my master cylinder was bad and that all the extra fluid I had put into the reservoir had leaked into my booster. About the same time I got a letter stating that a class action lawsuit was being filed in regard to brake failure and here I am.

While driving my truck several times now it shuts off in the middle of driving it without any warning. Many lights come on oil, wrench, check 4x4, limp mode, says remove item on passenger seat. Nothing on seat. Sometimes the truck starts back up other times it does not for approximately 15 minutes. Was almost rear ended by another vehicle one time. I have complained to Ford Motor company and unfortunately got no where with my complaint. I have read many complaints on the internet about the same problem and seems like it is only a ford truck problem. Widespread in the years I have seen complaints from 2006-2020 with the same problem. Something needs to be done before someone is hurt or even killed.

Transmission (Lead Frame - AL329G276D) malfunctions causes vehicle to downshift to 2nd or 1st gear at highway speed (60 mph+) with no warning. The truck's wheels lock up, causing the vehicle to skid uncontrollably until the transmission upshifts to a higher gear. This incident could cause a major highway accident endangering passengers and others driving on the highway. This enduring problem was a recall issue on 2011-2013 models and the vehicle was taken directly to the dealer to address at the problem that occurred twice under the same conditions. The problem was diagnosed (lead frame part number referenced previously) and the dealer acknowledged Ford F-150s have this problem all the time. The was no indication light on the dash before or after, however, the Ford dealer said the vehicle had an error code (P0722) when connected to their analyzer which indicates the transmission lead frame failure. I will not put my family and others at risk, the vehicle is not safe to drive, and now sits at my home as a $35,000-dollar paperweight. The reason it is not being repaired is because the Ford dealer cannot get the part to repair their own product, which they know is an on-going problem for thousands of Ford owners (their words - not mine.) Safety is more important than disappointment, but I waited 12 years to purchase a F-150.

While traveling at 60+MPH in manual on a busy freeway, the speedometer began fluctuating wildly and the vehicle downshifted again. Upon decelerating, the vehicle violently shifted into first gear with loss of control. Although an accident was avoided, the safety of passengers and other nearby vehicles were at risk. The vehicle was inspected at a Ford dealership and the issue was reproduced once but failed to properly show codes. After researching prior model years with similar concerns, replacement of the molded lead frame as would have been completed under a recall, alleviated the problem.
