What 630 owners told NHTSA about the 2014 Chevrolet Impala Eco Eassist

When getting of the exit from the high way my steering wheel locked up. We were going about 40-50 getting into a slow speed from the highway. I struggled with turning the wheel just to get off of the ramp. And then a sign came up saying service power steering drive with care. It’s showing that my vehicle doesn’t have a recall for this. But this is absolutely not safe at all. I had my 2 infants and 7 year old in the vehicle.

When I drive down the road my blind spot detection sensor goes off and lights up in the passenger mirror. It lights up if there is or is not a vehicle in my blind spot and has made me swerve back because I think there is someone or something in my blind spot. I have looked into this problem and it seems that there can be other issues that stem from this malfunction. I have owned the vehicle since 2019 where I purchased from a certified Chevrolet dealer and was not informed of this problem. This problem started to happen about 8 months ago and I reached out to where I purchased the venicle from with no response back from the salesperson I purchased thru. I don't want to continue to deal with this dealership and not get a return call from them. I have not had any other dealership look at this problem but I really need to find someone that can and will take care of this for me. I don't feel safe sometimes when changing lanes or letting my girlfriend us my vehicle to goto the store, or even take her child to school or sporting events he is involved in. I have done some searching on my own and seen that Chevrolet knows about this issue but I still have not received any information about this problem that has been going on for quite a bit of time.

I have taken it in on several occasions and been told there is no active code. My transmission control module constantly looses communication. Through my research I have found numerous accounts of this part failing and GM not repairing it, nor issuing a safety recall. I took the vehicle in and was told it was a common failure. The failure of this part has put myself and my children in danger, the computer failure causes the car to randomly shift gears while driving jerk violently and completely shut off at times. Currently it is stuck in 1 gear. I am a single parent, I am scared to travel with my children in the car, anywhere including school and medical appointments. This issue happens while driving the vehicle at all speeds including highway speeds. The last time I took it in the dealer stated, the vehicle was not safe to drive they notified my warranty company, which took 2 weeks to look at the vehicle at which time I was told that the fault code was not active but only in the history of the computer and they refused to repair it. Being that this is a known issue by GM I believe a safety recall should be issue before someone is hurt or killed, if they havent been already. The service advisor informed me that they were instructed to clear the codes from my OBD let the car sit and see if the issue returned. This issue has affected multiple GM vehicles yet they refuse to make the repair necessary to make the vehicle safe. questions; 1)TCM fails, yes it is available for inspection. 2) vehicle randomly shifts through gears including park, at all speeds. causing car to jerk violently, shut off or get stuck in 1 gear. It has shut off while traveling at 75 MPH on the high with my children in the car on multiple occasions. 3)yes at covert chevy in hutto, tx. even the service department was scared to drive it. 4) I dont know what the dealer inspected. 5)yes service stabilitrack and power steering and check engine light with code U0101

Driving at night my car headlights/instrument panel shut off on their own. I couldn’t see had to slam my brakes and pull over. Nothing I tried would turn them on. After almost a minute each time they just came back on theirselves. After googling this seems to be a known problem with Chevy impalas but no solution. This is highly dangerous. Bad wiring harnesses causing brakes and antilock brakes to throw codes and fail. Abs and stable track fail and also cause car to suddenly go to low engine power mode while driving down highway. Replaced nearly every brake component plus vehicle computers and abs modules. Vehicle now throwing new codes serious at random. Main pcm computer replaced twice. Abs, brake booster, abs modular, master cylinder, 4 calipers, hoses, abs module and abs valve assembly all these components replaced twice at least. Vehicle was not a flood car.

The contact later found that the wiring harness associated with this system was prone to corrosion and needed to be replaced. At about 86,000 miles I began getting a grinding noise from the left front side the wheel seems to lock up associated with a grabbing that I can feel when turning the steering wheel to the left. When this happens the Service Stability Trac and Service Trac Control indicators sometime appear but not always. I took my car to a GM Dealer locally a diagnostic performed said it was wheel hub assembly (bearings). Due to cost of dealer labor I took car to my local mechanic at his private garage. He performed a diagnostic and confirmed the assembly should be replaced. The assembly was replaced at my cost and has since been replaced twice more as warranty replacement because the mechanic thought the assemblies may have been defective, this after only a couple thousand miles or so on the replaced assembly. Typically, it happens at low speed, and mostly when turning left. It becomes a problem when I'm driving in busy traffic and turning at an intersection because it will just lock up and not let me go, stopping me in the middle of the intersection subjecting me to the possibility of being crashed into by other drivers. It is very frightening when this happens.
