After being parked for several days at the airport, the vehicle turned on, but would not start. The instrument cluster had the following message, “Service required do not change transmission position”. I contacted Mercedes road side assistance who cannot access this parking level. They indicated I should push the car out of the lot and have it towed with a flat bed. After a review they had a software reset that is available after 40 minutes. They indicated to drive only outside, then to park and have the vehicle towed. If I drove further it could void the warranty. This scenario repeated multiple times over several months, including maybe five weeks in the shop in the first four months. Mercedes ultimately purchased the car back from me. Indicated the car was not fixable. The car is now for sale on the retail lot at the same dealer.

While driving, the instrument cluster and infotainment system displays intermittently go blank for 2-3 minutes. It appears that instrument cluster and infotainment systems crash and reboot. We have not noted any errors or warnings that may precede a failure. This has happened in this vehicle at least 5 times, in 2000 miles of driving. This presents a safety risk. No vehicle instrumentation is available when this happens. Vehicle instruments, including speedometer, blinker indicators, lane keep notifications, backup camera, etc are non-functional during the time it takes the screens to start working again. Dealer/MB has attempted to resolve repeatedly with no results. Dealer could not duplicate, but confirmed fault codes. We have video of this occurring.

As I entered a single lane roundabout the car suddenly stopped very abruptly. There was no imminent danger nor were there any cars coming through the roundabout. There was no reason to apply the brakes. Fortunately there was no car behind me otherwise there certainly would have been a rear end collision. I was jarred by the abrupt stop and sustained injury to my back. I will be notifying the dealer. The vehicle has not yet been inspected. There were no warning lights or messages prior to the incident.

I received the new car on December 19-2024. The first time it was back at the dealership was December 21 for a computer malfunction. The screens shut down while driving. Since then, it has been back at the dealership #6 other times for the same issue, and they have not been able to fix things. Yesterday at a highway, it happened #6 times.

How to use these: a complaint is one owner’s report, filed voluntarily and published unverified. Patterns matter more than any single story. If several owners describe the same failure at similar mileage, put that system at the top of your pre-purchase inspection list. Back to the full 2025 Mercedes-benz AMG E 53 4matic+ Wagon verdict →
