What 28 owners told NHTSA about the 2024 Cadillac XT4

Automatic emergency braking activated on three separate occasions when there weren’t any reasons for it to engage, additionally if there were any cars behind me I would have been rear ended since they would not have anticipated me stopping so suddenly.

The vehicle has a chronic defect causing rapid, repeating front-end suspension and steering assembly failures. The right front strut and mount failed and were replaced under warranty twice in 2025 (at 29,968 miles and 35,740 miles). In May 2026, the left front strut and mount failed and were replaced. Two days after picking up the vehicle, a cascading mechanical failure occurred when the left front CV axle boot split, covering the wheel well in grease and requiring a complete CV axle shaft replacement. Following these consecutive teardowns, the dealer omitted a mandatory safety wheel alignment. The vehicle was returned with a severe lateral steering pull and a steering wheel forced to the 1 o'clock tracking position while driving straight, causing extreme handling instability on public roads. The manufacturer refused to authorize a warranty alignment to fix this safety hazard, forcing an out-of-pocket expense at a separate facility to make the car safely drivable.

Vehicle died leaving the doctor's office due to faulty fuel pump driver control module. Upon research found that this has been an ongoing issue for several years affecting many GM vehicles. Vehicle can stall at any time in traffic causing serious injury or death. Apparently GM does not have a fix for this problem & the company's solution is to replace the faulty module with modules that have the same defects. Also, when affected vehicles stall in traffic, the parking brakes set & there is no way to even put the vehicles in neutral so that they can safely be moved out of the roadway. This increases the chances of causing a serious accident if one was not caused by the initial breakdown. GM should not be allowed to sale these vehicles with faulty parts putting countless lives in danger.

I was getting out of a parking lot with my 3 kids and the car shut off right in the middle of the entrance/exit of the lot blocking anyone from coming in or out. The car would not go into neutral to move it, making it unsafe for my family and everyone around us. We tried to charge the battery but that did nothing. We called tow truck then where told we need a special tow truck since the car could not be put into neutral. We waited hours for a tow truck, when we finally go there, the car's emergency breaks keep coming on and would not turn off. We ended up removing the battery. I was told that it was the Module fuel Pump shorted out, it was a common issue. I asked how we could put the car in neutral and he stated that there is no way to put the car in neutral when this happens, which is a safety issue. This should be a recall. I have the app that is supposed to alert me if there are any issues, nothing showed until after the call shut off, even then all it said was that the battery was low followed by an issue with the fuel management system.

Had three different incidents: 1st occurrence was at a red light and vehicle stalled and would not restart. Jumped the vehicle and went on my way. 2nd time was traveling at 40 mph and engine killed. Jumped it again and it started. 3rd time vehicle was parked and would not start. Had it towed to dealership. They determined it was a bad fuel pump power module. This is a dangerous reoccurring issue with the Cadillac XT4 which demands a recall!

High-pitched squeal under light braking at low speeds (under 10 mph), typically occurring during the first few stops of the day...Dealer stated TSB Numbers: 20-NA-002 or MC-10232149-0001 only refers to 2020 model year. Please update this TSB so it includes 2024 model year XT4 vehicles. Dealer unable to replace break pads and charge GM without updated TSB. Note: Issue has been ongoing since purchase of vehicle and both dealers in Michigan (where purchased) and Indiana stated humidity. Recently, Indiana dealer (Lockhart Cadillac Fishers) got more and more vehicles back so now believes it should have a TSB to fix due to noise caused by semi metallic pad issue. Dealer charging $469.78 to apply anti squeal to pads which they know is only a temporary fix (so not recommending it). Dealer cannot help unless GM acknowledges issue.

While driving on the highway at approximately 65-70 mph the Automatic Emergency Braking system engaged for no apparent reason, no vehicles were around or near our vehicle. The sudden and unexpected braking could have cause a major accident resulting in serious injuries or worst had our vehicle been rear ended.

Car suddenly stopped while driving and would not start and stalled. Tried to restart multiple times with failed to restart. Car cranked but did not start after multiple attempts. There were no warning signs or indication before stall. Luckily, incident happened in parking lot way out from it. Traffic behind had to steer to other lane to maneuver. Stalling on public road or freeway could’ve been a safety concern for occupants and others. Dealer diagnosed the issue as faulty fuel pump driver module and replaced the part. Issued was fixed under vehicle manufacturer warranty.

MY PASSENGER AND I WERE THRUST FORWARD INTO THE STEERING WHEEL AND DASHBOARD RESPECTIVELY. THE CAR BEHIND ME HIT ME. BOTH CARS SUSTAINED DAMAGE. THERE WAS NOTHING IN FRONT OF ME THAT SHOULD HAVE CAUSED THIS SAFETY SYSTEM TO ENGAGE.I BELEIVE THEY CALL THIS PHANTOM BRAKING. BECAUSE I HAD JUST STARTED UP FROM THE LIGHT, MY SPEED WAS SLOW AND WE SUSTAINED NO INJURIES. HOWEVER IF THAT HAPPENED ON THE FREEWAY I TRAVEL QUITE FREQUENTLY, I WOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. I AM SO STRESSED ABOUT DRIVING THIS CAR, I ASKED CADILLAC TO DISENGAGE IT. GM AND CADILLAC BOTH DID INSPECTIONS AND CADILLAC SAID THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM. I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE GM REPORT AND HAVE ASKED FOR AN EXPLANATION. MY UNDERSTANDING WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR LAST YEAR WAS THAT THE "SMART SYSTEM" WAS FOR FORWARD EMERGENCY BRAKING FOR VEHICLES AHEAD NOT BEHIND THE CAR. WHEN I DRIVE OUT OF MY GARAGE AND IT JUST STARTS TO RAIN, THE AUTOMATIC BRAKING SYSTEM ABRUPTLY STOPS MY CAR AND I CANNOT GET OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY UNTIL THE CAR GETS FULLY WET. On [XXX] my car auto brake unexpected early afternoon on [XXX] . SPEED WAS APPROXIMATELY 53 mph. A Mack dump truck almost rear ended me. On [XXX] the same thing happened in Philipsburg NJ on [XXX] . CAR WAS BROUGHT TO Faulkner Cadillac in Bethel, Pa. In both cases, there were no cars or objects in my path. About 2 months ago the same thing happened at low speed in Watchung, NJ. IT HAS HAPPENED 3 other times in reverse. Faukner reprogrammed front view camera for the [XXX] incident. It has failed and has nearly caused be to be in 2 very serious accidents. Various other XT4 Cadillac owners have reported similar incidents. I asked my Cadillac dealer to refer this to GM. I’m afraid to drive the vehicle. Immediately after this incident, the Check Engine and Transmission System warnings also appeared. This vehicle is still new, and it is completely unacceptable to experience failures in major systems like AEB, engine, and transmission. I have since learned about TSB #24-NA-053, which describes false AEB activations in XT4 models. My concern is that my vehicle may be affected. This car was purchased without notification of this issue from the dealership regarding the xt4 and obviously it was also not resolved upon my purchase of the car. While driving the vehicle on 01 May 2025, the car rapidly decelerated from over 60MPH to under 30 MPH in an instant. The car would not go over 30MPH. The power steering was off, the safety restraint was off, service transmission warning was on, engine light was on,low fuel indicator was on (I had over a half tank of gas), and service stabilitrak was on. The car had to be towed to the dealership. This is the second time this has occurred within the last 45 days. I just purchased the car in the middle of March. This is extremely unsafe as if I was on a highway I would be injured, someone else would be injured or death. I filed a complaint on 20 March 2025 (Complaint No: 11649676).

While backing up I had situations where the automatic brakes would engage although there was no obstruction behind the car. To stop this from happening, I had to turn this feature off. I brought the car in for service (Ed Morse Cadillac in Delray Beach, Florida) and was given a Cadillac Service Bulletin that acknowledged this was a problem with 2023-2025 cadillacs and there was no fix for this problem. They suggest that I do what I had done- turn it off. I feel this is not an adequate response. This is a very important safety feature that helps to insure that motorists will not hit objects while going in reverse, and more importantly will not hit a person or child, possibly causing severe injuries. Cadillac should find a way to fix this issue before someone is killed because of this.

I am reporting a serious safety issue with my vehicle, purchased from Ed Morse Cadillac. The vehicle has unexpectedly shut off while I was driving on multiple occasions (3 times to date). When this occurs, the entire infotainment and dashboard screen goes completely black, and most alarmingly, the brakes become unresponsive or extremely difficult to engage. This creates a highly dangerous situation where I am unable to control or stop the vehicle safely, putting myself and others at serious risk of a crash or injury. This is not a one-time occurrence—it has happened multiple times under normal driving conditions. I have contacted the dealership, but they have ignored my attempts to resolve the issue. This problem clearly involves critical vehicle systems and should be investigated as a potential defect. I am requesting that the NHTSA open an investigation into this issue, as this vehicle poses a danger to public safety.

I am submitting this complaint to report a significant safety system failure in my 2025 Cadillac XT4 during an accident that occurred on April 12, 2025, in Dallas, Texas. During the incident: •The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) did not activate, and I was unable to stop in time to avoid a collision. •Neither the driver nor passenger airbags deployed, despite sufficient impact that should have triggered deployment. •OnStar Automatic Crash Response did not activate, nor was I contacted by any emergency response service through the vehicle. None of the vehicle’s safety systems functioned during this event, despite being standard factory-installed features. My XT4 had no warning lights or diagnostic messages indicating any malfunction prior to the crash. This failure closely resembles previous complaints noted in NHTSA filings (e.g., ABS sensor failures, OnStar module failures, and the 2025 XT4 passenger airbag recall). I am extremely concerned that this may point to a broader defect within the model line’s safety infrastructure, including collision sensors, electronic communication systems, or airbag deployment logic. I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate whether a defect exists in the braking or airbag systems, particularly where no safety features activate in a crash. I would be willing to provide repair records, crash photos, and allow the vehicle to be inspected if needed. Thank you for your attention and for helping to ensure driver safety through proper oversight.

Oil temperature was 280/300 and rising. Warnings came on the car stating service all wheel drive system,service safety restraint as airbags will not deploy, service transmission, service power steering along with the check engine light.I could not maneuver the car nor was the car drivable.Car was towed as it could not be driven.Car put myself and others at extreme risk.If I was on a highway myself or others would have been killed.Car was bought on [XXX].Incident occurred on [XXX]. This is my second Cadillac XT 4 in two years and both have experienced the same thing. As I'm driving and come to a light to stop, the entire vehicle system goes black and cuts off. This has happened to me know 4 times, were the vehicle becomes disable in the middle of the road, during heavy traffic and almost hit several times from the rear. Each time I was in tears, thinking I was going to die and would call OnStar for assistance. The vehicle would not start, keep making this clicking sounds as if it's trying. The vehicle would automatically go into 'Park' and will not release for any other gear. I was told the Fuel Management System, that I was told was not suppose to happen in the 2024 model like it did in my 2022 model. My app also reports a "Transmission System Failure" for a brand new vehicle almost a year old & 7700 miles on it. I can't deal with GMC & my life over their products. I want to get rid of the vehicle and never purchase another one of their products. Highly disappointed & the lack of concern from GMC about their customers.

Backup camera does not function at night. The issue appeared on day one, the car was leased in this condition in July 2024. The problem has been reported to and known by the dealership and witnessed by the sales manager at King O’Rourke dealership in Smithtown NY. The first record of written correspondence is shared in a photo of an email September 2024. If it’s dark outside without bright street lights it is literally black on the screen. It has also been inspected by the service department and the recent email is attached . They gave me my car back without fixing it the first time. I brought it back again and they changed the camera and updated the software. They said saw the dark screen at night. GM is telling the dealership to test another car of the same make and color. The dealer stated that in the meantime they cannot give me another loaner while they figure out how to fix the problem because GM said it’s functioning normally (photo of email attached). I am currently driving the car and live on a very dark street. This is VERY unsafe and GM is not taking this seriously.

Driver's and passengers' front windows. When driving in sunlight the windows are hazy/milky. Inspected by dealership. There are no warning lamps, messages or other systems 1st appeared July 29, 2024 Have brought the vehicle on numerous occasions to the dealership for this issue. When driving during daytime in sunlight both driver's window and front passenger window are hazy/milky. Dealership states they cannot replicate the issue. There is nothing to replicate, the haze and milky substance are on the windows.

On four occasions now, the car slammed on the brakes as if the collision detection system was going off. Someone did almost hit me from behind as they needed to slam on their brakes due to my cars collision system going off when not supposed to. This has been well documented with Cadillac and the leased vehicle has been back in the shop 4 months out of the year we owned it. It is a major safety issue and am very concerned it will happen at a time that may cause a bad accident, injury or loss of life if something is not done. Cadillac has replaced many electrical parts and tells us it is fixed when in fact it is not and it happened again this week and will be going back to the shop for the 5th time next week.

On June 13th 2024, and on July 30th 2024, while driving on highway my Cadillac XT4 suddenly jerked forward as if I had been struck from behind by another vehicle. The vehicle seemed to have lost all power and appeared to stall in the lanes of the highway. This created a very dangerous situation, causing vehicles behind me to swerve in order to avoid a collision. Be advised that the vehicle did not turn off, because I didn’t have to restart it, however it felt like it did. This situation could have caused myself, and passengers to be injured or killed, especially if a large truck was behind me and unable to stop. Luckily I was able to steer the vehicle onto the shoulder off the highway.
