What 653 owners told NHTSA about the 2019 Honda Accord Fhev

The contact owned a 2019 Honda Accord. The contact stated that while driving at 60 MPH, the computer system failed. The contact stated that the traction control, tire pressure warning system, and several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the power steering seized, and the tires slipped. In addition, the brake pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to stop as intended. The contact attempted to steer the vehicle onto the shoulder of the road. The contact’s vehicle crashed into a metal wall several times. The contact sustained injuries to the left shoulder and his neck. In addition, the contact sustained multiple bruises and bumps. The contact received medical treatment from the contact’s primary care physician. The vehicle was towed to a local tow yard. An independent mechanic connected a scanner to the black box, and the vehicle's computer displayed a warning. The vehicle was not repaired. In addition, the vehicle was condemned total loss. A police report was filed. The contact obtained the black box and was seeking assistance with collecting the stored data. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 31,000.

I regularly had issues with the automatic braking system. On 11/2/2020 I was driving on the highway and the braking system automatically engaged, causing me to swerve and hit a semi-truck. This resulted in a total loss to the vehicle and ongoing back pain.

At approximately 16:08 EST on Jan 1, 2022 I was traveling westbound on I-76 at mile marker 146.9 WB (40°02'03.0"N 78°29'50.0"W) in the center lane on a straight section of road at approximately 70mph. Car mileage was 21264 at the time of the crash. The weather at the time of the crash was light rain and with temperature approximately 50F. The car suddenly and for no apparent reason began skidding / fishtailing. I tried steering to regain control of the vehicle and applying the brakes to slow down, but the car continued fishtailing. I did not feel the anti lock brakes engage at any point during the skid. I went into the left lane, and struck the center concrete barrier, causing the airbags to deploy and the car to come to rest in the left lane. 3 symptoms appeared the day of the crash which had never happened before: 1) Several hours before the crash, the vehicle began handling strangely. It felt like there was either steering or brake input from the land keeping assist / adaptive cruise control / traction control systems which was "fighting" me and causing the vehicle to swerve slightly. These handling anomalies occurred randomly about 10 times immediately before the crash. 2) About 2 hours before the crash, the check engine light began flashing and there was a loss of engine power. I pulled over and restarted the car, which seemed to resolve the check engine light / power loss. 3) At one point the adaptive cruise control turned itself off and gave a message about traction conditions. To my knowledge the problem has not been confirmed or reproduced, and the vehicle has not yet been inspected by Honda, my insurer, or anyone else. As of Jan 6, the vehicle is currently in a yard near Altoona PA awaiting assessment, and is available for inspection upon request. I informed Honda about the crash on Jan 6, 2022. They gave me a case number and said to work through my insurer on next steps. Honda service bulletin 21-052 may be relevant to this incident.

ON 02/06/2021, AFTER ENTERING A GATED RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY, THE CAR SUDDENLY BRAKES FOR NO REASON. NO OTHER VEHICLES OR PEDESTRIANS WERE ON THE ROAD. WEATHER WAS OVERCAST. ROADWAY WAS DRY. SPEED WAS APPROXIMATLEY 27 MPH. NECK AND HEAD INJURY RESULTED. HONDA DEALER COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG AFTER RUNNING ALL TESTS. THEREFORE, THEY SAID NOTHIG WAS WRONG WITH THE CAR. JUST YESTERDAY THE CAR HIT THE BREAK ON IT'S OWN WHEN THE CAR ON THE OTHER SIDE WAS CLEARLY ON THE OTHER LANE THE CAR MADE A HORRIBLE SUDDEN STOP THAT CAUSED BRUISING TO MY NECK AND ALSO MY PASSENGER GOT HURT WITH EVERYTHING THAT FLUNG FROM THE BACKSEAT HE SAID THE TUG WAS TOO MUCH . WE THOUGHT SOMEONE HAD HIT ME . THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME THE CAR HAS DONE THIS I FEEL I GET CONSTANT TIRE POPS BECAUSE OF THIS CAR VEERS ME OFF INTO A LANE THAT ISN'T EVEN THERE. I HAVE WITNESSES THAT SAY I HAVE A LEMON CAR I ALWAYS SAY NO BUT THIS LAST INCIDENT WAS TOO MUCH FOR ME . ALSO THE CHARGER PORT NOT USB HAS NOT WORKED SINCE DAY ONE ANOTHER THING THEY SAID WAS WORKING AGAIN NOTHING . I WENT BACK AND THEY SAID I HAD NO WARRANTIES . 07/06/20 WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT DUE TO THE PLASTIC GAS PEDAL SNAPPING OFF AND BECOMING LODGED BEHIND THE BRAKE PEDAL PREVENTING ADEQUATE STOPPING THAT RESULTED IN ME REAR ENDING ANOTHER VEHICLE. MAX SPEED REACHED ON THE FREEWAY BEFORE COLLISION WAS 65 MPH. TRYING TO BRAKE WAS NOT SMOOTH AND I HAD TO PRESS DOWN EXTREMELY HARD IN ORDER FOR THE BRAKING SYSTEM TO RESPOND AND STILL ENDED UP COLLIDING WITH THE OTHER VEHICLE AT A HIGHER RATE OF SPEED THAN THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN WHEN PAYING ATTENTION TO SURROUNDING TRAFFIC, EVEN WITH A CAR LENGTH DISTANCE INFRONT OF ME AT THE START OF BREAKING. IT IS TYPICAL OF THE BRAKING SYSTEM TO ENGAGE WHEN "DETECTING" CLOSE PROXIMITY TO ANOTHER OBJECT OR VEHICLE BUT, ON MANY OCCASIONS THERE WAS NO ONE THERE; HOWEVER, IN THE CASE OF TODAYS ACCIDENT COLLISION MITIGATION WAS NOT RESPONSIVE. TIRE ROTATION PERFORMED AT HONDA ON 6/29/20 WITH REPORTS THAT BRAKE LINES, FLUIDS, AND PADS WERE UP TO PAR HOWEVER THIS IS MOST CERTAINLY NOT THE CASE. THERE IS CURRENTLY A RECALL THAT HAS NOT MADE ITS WAY TO CONSUMERS FOR THE FUEL PUMP IN THIS CAR THAT TOOK ME SO DIGGING TO FIND. INITIATED 5,28,2020 BUT, WILL NOT GO IN EFFECT UNTIL 7,22,2020. I COULD HAVE LOST MY LIFE TODAY! SUCH A SCARY SITUATION TO BE IN.

WE LEASED A HONDA ACCORD IN JULY, 2019. WE ARE A HONDA FAMILY. BEFORE THE ACCIDENT ON JANUARY 10 OF THIS YEAR, WE NOTICED SEVERAL UNUSUAL HAPPENINGS. THE TRUNK LID WOULD OPEN WHILE DRIVING AFTER BEING SECURELY LATCHED. IT ALSO WOULD BEGIN BRAKING UNNECESSARILY. THE UNFORTUNATE INCIDENT OCCURRED WHEN THE DRIVER DROVE INTO A PARKING SPACE IN FRONT OF A LOCAL RETAIL STORE TRAVELING SLOWLY WHEN THE HONDA INEXPLICABLY ACCELERATED FORWARD VERY QUICKLY. IT JUMPED THE CURB, WENT OVER WIDE SIDEWALK, TRAVELED THROUGH A BRICK WALL ANCHORING A HUGE STORE WINDOW, AND THEN WENT CRASHED THROUGH THE HUGE WINDOW. THE HONDA FINALLY STOPPED AFTER IT HAD COMPLETELY ENTERED THE STORE. FORTUNATELY, NOBODY WAS INJURED. WE ARE VERY GRATEFUL FOR THIS. IT SEEMS THAT SOMETHING IS SERIOUSLY WRONG WITH THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM OF THE HONDA. WE FELT THAT IT WAS OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO NOTIFY HONDA IN HOPE OF PREVENTING A FUTURE TRAGEDY.
