On [XXX], my 2017 Land Rover Range Rover HSE Td6 diesel (VIN: [XXX] ) suffered a complete, catastrophic engine failure without warning at approximately 70 mph on [XXX] . My wife and our two infant sons (ages [XXX] and [XXX] ) were passengers. There were no prior warning lights or symptoms. The engine stopped instantaneously, eliminating power steering and power brakes while I was overtaking a semi-truck in the passing lane. We narrowly reached the shoulder safely. The odometer read 79,018 miles — inside both limits of the federally mandated 8-year/80,000-mile emissions warranty under 40 CFR §85.2103. The vehicle was 7 years old at time of failure. Hoehn Land Rover Carlsbad diagnosed complete engine failure caused by timing chain guide failure — a known defect pattern in the Ingenium diesel engine. The service manager stated failures like this "aren't that rare" with these engines. Repair estimate: $28,000–$30,000. Jaguar Land Rover North America (Case #[XXX]) denied the warranty claim entirely, offering $800, without ever evaluating the claim under the active federal emissions warranty. Their denial cited only the expired extended CPO warranty and a maintenance gap — neither of which constitutes valid grounds for denying an emissions warranty claim under 40 CFR §85.2103(d), as the manufacturer cannot demonstrate the maintenance gap caused a documented design defect. This failure pattern is documented in JLR Technical Service Bulletins LTB00735 and SSM74184. Land Rover Korea issued a recall for the same timing chain failure in 2020. No equivalent recall was issued in the United States for identical vehicles with identical engines. JLR has refused all requests for review or reconsideration for 24 months. Engine keeps randomly stalling at stop lights and/or stop signs. I was almost T-boned when making a left turn at [XXX] on [XXX]. This has been very dangerous. I have left multiple messages with the local dealership, Tom Wood Jaquar/LandRover with NO returned phone call so I drove over there on 8/15/2025. They told me that they would call me when they have some availability to look at the vehicle. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I was informed by Hennessey Land Rover that there is a "Y" Alen pipe in the coolant system that will most likely fail around 50,000 to 60,000 miles. The "Y" piece is two pieces of pipe sandwiched together verses one solid piece. They are telling me that once the pipe fails all of the coolant will escape the engine block and will most likely seize the engine. They are not covering the cost to do the repair, around $4500.00, and I find this unacceptable because they build the coolant system with a piece they know is faulty.

On July 16th, 2021, this vehicle was purchased from Frankel Range Rover as a Certified 2017 Range Rover with 36K miles on it. The vehicle has always received maintenance on time and directly from the Range Rover dealership as scheduled. However, without warning signs, lights or indicators of any kind on January 31st, 2024 the car started making a strange noise and was immediately towed directly back to where it was purchased. The car has been at the dealership for over 3 weeks and unable to be diagnosed. Finally I get a call that the Certified vehicle that I purchased less than 3 years with 36K miles on it and that I have driven less than 30K miles requires a new engine with only 63,700 miles on the odometer. This vehicle has a major issue if it requires a engine and had to be a lemon. The manufacturer is stating that a new engine will cost roughly $38,900. Please look into this because having me drive a lemon vehicle with no warning signs is a safety risk to not only my family but others. The problem as been inspected by the dealership and there were not any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, The problem began on January 31st, 2024.

THE VEHICLE IS DOING THE EXACT BEHAVIOR OF TECHNICAL BULLETIN N206NAS1. THE FUEL GAUAGE INDICATES LOW FUEL AND THE LOW FUEL WARNING LAMP IS ILLUMINATED ALTHOUGH THE FUEL TANK IS KNOWN NOT TO BE EMPTY. THE ENGINE WILL CUT OFF UNEXPECTEDLY WHILE DRIVING AND IT IS CONSIDERED UNSAFE. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND THE DEALER REFUSED TO GIVE THE VEHICLE A SERVICE UPDATE WITHOUT HAVING THE TECH CHARGE A LARGE FEE TO PLUG IN THE CAR WHEN ITS A KNOWN ISSUE. PLEASE ADVISE.

While I am in intersections driving, the car completely shuts off and I have to start the car back up for it to actually drive. It completely turns off while you’re driving. I have had several electrical issues with the car that have also been repaired. I’ve brought the car into the dealer service center over seven times and they have not been able to reproduce the issue of shutting off. I have installed a dash cam to record when it happens randomly. I reported to Land Rover corporate and they have not done anything over 8 months with this issue. I have two daughters and I’m concerned about getting into an accident with this car shutting off randomly. This has been occurring since I purchased the car in October 2020. Please help.

WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET THE CAR JUST STOPS. I WOULD HAVE A FULL TANK OF GAS AND THE GAGE READS EMPTY. IN ADDITION ALL LIGHTS ON THE DASH BOARD GO ON. THE CAR HAD TO BE FLAT BEDDED MANY TIMES. I HAVE NO DOCUMENTATION BECAUSE THE CAR WAS ONCE AGAIN FLAT BEDDED INTO SERVICE CURRENTLY , AND ALL PAPERWORK IS IN THE CAR.

VEHICLE HAS SEVERAL ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. THE BOARD WILL GO BLACK SCREEN WHILE DRIVING. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER 2 TIMES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM, AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY WILL CONTACT ME WITH A SOFTWARE UPDATE. IT NEVER HAPPENED. I DONT HAVE TIME TO TAKE A CAR TO THE DEALER EVERY WEEK. IT IS A NEW CAR. I LEASED IT ON SEP. IT WOULD INDICATE MALFUNCTION ENGINE LIGHT LAST TIME. THE VEHICLE STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I WOULD START THE ENGINE AND WOULD NOT SHIFT GEAR. I HAD TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE MANNUALLY AT 5 MILES PER HOUR TO MY HOUSE. THE TOW TRUCK TOOK MY CAR 2 WEEKS AGO TO THE DEALER. THE CAR IS UNDER REPAIRS. NO LUCK AS TO WHAT IS GOING ON. TODAY THEY CALLED THAT ARE CHANGING THE FUEL PUMP. WAITING FOR THE PART AND AFTER INSTALLATION THEY SEE IF THE PROBLEMS ARE RESOLVED

How to use these: a complaint is one owner’s report, filed voluntarily and published unverified. Patterns matter more than any single story. If several owners describe the same failure at similar mileage, put that system at the top of your pre-purchase inspection list. Back to the full 2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport (5 Seat) verdict →
