What 144 owners told NHTSA about the 2014 Nissan Murano Hybrid

The contact owns a 2014 Nissan Murano. The contact stated that multiple issues were experienced with the vehicle while driving, including the following: the transmission has odd noises, is not changing gears properly, and emits a burning smell; the vehicle randomly overheats; the brake fluid bubbles when the vehicle is turned on; the AC compressor has failed three times; and the serpentine belt and power steering fluid randomly fail. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where a pressure test was performed indicating issues with the Continuously Variable Transmission, engine, and brakes. Only the AC compressor was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 125,600.

On multiple occasions now the transmission has failed to switch gears causing the RPM's to stay elevated while no additional power has been created. This happens mostly on the highway at 55 to 60 mph but has also happened on side/back roads especially when changing elevation (up or down hill). The repair shop said it is throwing transmission repair codes and that this type of transmission is not worth fixing. They would simply need to order a new one from Nissan at between $7,500.00 to $8,500.00 dollars. Great money making scheme for Nissan. There are multiple complaints of this problem for the 2014 Murano and there are recalls on Nissan transmissions from other years. This seems to be a significant problem with the 2014 Murano as well and should be considered a recall situation for which Nissan is responsible.

I have done a lot of research on these Nissan Muranos and other Nissan models. There are recalls for this exact same issue on models 2015-2019 and I have a 2014. I have viewed many complaints and reviews that state owners also have problem with the CVT transmission. Mine is giving error messages and been acting up while on the interstate. It will jolt into 4 rpm and higher and stay there. This always happens on the interstate and has happened a few times on slower speed limit roads. Seems like the issue is mainly when the car is over 60mph on the interstate. It seems very dangerous and I know Nissan CVT transmission have been recalled. I only have 132,000 miles on my vehicle and many mechanics have told me that it should not be going out like this with this few miles.

The transmission has given out. There are recalls for the same year (2014) on different Nissan vehicles. There are issues that I have never had. One minute it will go then it'll shudder and not move at all even with the pedal pushed down. It goes into limp mode. There are threads and pages created just for this issue and nothing has been done about it. The car gave out on me while in traffic, pulling out into traffic, and nearly avoided causing a crash that could have ended in death or sever injury. Why is this not being addressed??? I've had the transmission flushed by Nissan and also after the incident. The vehicle is available for inspection but will need to be towed. I should not have to fork out thousands of dollars to fix a major Nissan issue. This happened with no warning. Just failure. No warning lamps or symptoms.

The most recent incident happened today. The transmission started whining and RPMs went high. This looks to be an issue for more Muranos than necessary and should be considered a recall problem.

Driving within a few miles headed home from work my car began to loose power as if it wanted to die out on me. It struggled tremendously to gain RPM as if it wasn't getting any gas. I had reached a red traffic light and was afraid it would shut off while awaiting on light to turn green. It would not pick up speed and was shaking badly. Eventually my check engine light appeared but I was already arriving home thankfully. Sadly, upon doing my research of troubleshooting possible issues for Nissan Murano online I came across many issues regarding the transmission. Worse of it all, Nissan has been well informed of this ongoing issue. A class action was filed in 2016 but it appears that was a limited time. My issue has just begun regarding my transmission, so how does this help anyone who is just now dealing with this type of issue? THEY HAD NOT HAD ANY TRAINING ON HOW TO REPAIR IT AND THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THEY ALSO SAID THAT THEY HAD OTHER NISSAN MURANOS COME IN WITH THE SAME ISSUE. THIS COULD BE A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE THAT COULD IF THIS HAPPENED ON A HIGHWAY WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC. WE MADE IT TO THE SECOND PART OF THE TRIP BUT WE HAD TO BABY THE CAR. WE MANAGED TO GET THE CAR OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TOOK IT TO A NISSAN DEALERSHIP. THEY TOLD US THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAD FAILED.. THE REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION WE PUT IN THE YEAR PRIOR CAME WITH A 1 YEAR/12K MILE WARRANTY. WHILE IT FAILED WITHIN A YEAR, WE WERE 2K MILES OVER THE WARRANTY LIMIT.
