THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN AND HAD ONLY BEEN STARTED AND MOVING FOR LESS THAN 5 MINUTES. NOTICED THAT WINDSHIELD WIPERS WOULD NOT SHUT OFF OR CHANGE SPEEDS, THEN NOTICED A SLIGHT ODOR IN CAR THAT INCREASINGLY STRENGTHENED. PHONED MY HUSBAND WHILE AT A STOP LIGHT, ODOR OF SOMETHING BURNING BECAME MUCH STRONGER, THEN NOTICED SMOKE COMING BETWEEN THE THE DRIVERS SIDE HOOD SEAM AND BETWEEN THE HOOD AND THE WINDSHIELD, THIS WAS IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY NOTICABLE FLAME. I PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK, TURNED ON HAZARD LIGHTS AND EXITED THE VEHICLE. LOCAL POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED, BEGAN WITH SMALL FIRE EXTINGUISHERS, WITHOUT SUCCESS AND FIRE DEPARTMENT OPENED HOOD AND APPLIED WATER TO EXTINGUISH. THIS WAS ON A CITY STREET IN O'FALLON, MO. UNCERTAIN OF CAUSE, BUT AM NOW AWARE THAT FORD ISSUED A RECALL ON THIS MODEL (RECALL 17S09) AND BELIEVE THIS COULD BE A POSSIBILITY.

CURRENT ISSUE IS HEAD GASKET OVERHEATED AND BLEW. COOLANT IS INTERNALLY LEAKING INTO THE ENGINE. CAR BLOWS OUT A TON OF EXHAUST WHILE DRIVING AND HAS THE SMELL OF COOLANT IN IT. I CAN'T EVEN DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY ANYMORE BECAUSE THE CAR OVERHEATS AND LIMITS MY SPEED TO 45 MPH. SOMETIMES I HAVE TO PULL OVER JUST TO LET IT COOL DOWN. EVERY TIME THE CAR STARTS UP IT VIBRATES SO MUCH THAT ITS QUITE ANNOYING. SOMETIMES THE CAR SHUTS OFF RIGHT AFTER I START IT IN THE MORNING, RIGHT AFTER A CRAZY BURST OF VIBRATION. A LITTLE OVER A MONTH AGO I STARTED MY CAR AND IT VIBRATED SO MUCH AND THEN SO MUCH OIL LEAKED FROM MY CAR, EXHAUST BLEW OUT DARK BLACK SMOG AND SMOKE WAS COMING FROM MY HOOD. CAR IS REALLY LOUD ON IDLE, NEVER BEEN IN A CAR SO LOUD WITH SO MUCH VIBRATION ALL THROUGHOUT THE CAR. CAR CONSTANTLY OVERHEATS AND HAS NO POWER WHEN DRIVING. CAR VIBRATES INSANELY WHEN I'M IDLE AT A RED LIGHT. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT GOES ON AND OFF EVERY OTHER DAY. MY MECHANIC HAS DONE RESEARCH ON THE CAR AND SAYS TO GET RID OF IT, IT'S NOT EVEN WORTH FIXING; HE SAYS YOU'LL END UP SPENDING JUST AS MUCH MONEY FIXING THIS IN THE LONG RUN THAN JUST BUYING A NEW CAR. MY MECHANIC SAID FIXING THE HEAD GASKET WONT SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM, YOU NEED AN ENTIRE NEW ENGINE AND CYLINDER BLOCK. WE'VE BEEN DOING A LOT OF RESEARCH ON THIS CAR/MODEL AND EVERYONE'S HAVING THE SAME ISSUES AND CAN'T REALLY GET DOWN TO THE BOTTOM LINE ON WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. I'M CURIOUS IF EVERYONE HAS THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR/MODEL THAT THERE'S NO MAJOR RECALL ON IT. INSTEAD PEOPLE ARE DRIVING AROUND WITH A LOUD CAR THAT CONSTANTLY VIBRATES, LEAKS COOLANT INTO THE ENGINE AND HAVING TO CONSTANTLY TAKE IT TO THE SHOP.

ENGINE FIRE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY THE CAR ENGINE STOPPED AND I COASTED TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER. I MADE PHONE CALLS FOR HELP AND ASSISTANCE. THEN HE HAD ME RUN THE ENGINE IN IDLE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE CAR SEEMED TO RUN FINE. IN AN EFFORT TO GET THE CAR OFF OF THE HIGHWAY AND TO GET SOME MORE COOLANT, I DROVE THE CAR TO THE PARKING LOT OF A LOCAL STORE APPROXIMATELY 1.5 MILES. WHEN I PULLED INTO THE PARKING LOT, THE CAR WAS STEAMING UP AGAIN SO I PARKED IT OUT A WAYS FROM THE STORE. I NOTICED THAT THE SMOKE WAS A BIT BLACK AND THICK, SO I OPENED THE HOOD AND SAW THE PLASTIC ENGINE COVER WAS ON FIRE. I STARTED THROWING SNOW ON IT WHEN SOMEONE CAME BY WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER, SO I USED IT TO PUT THE FIRE OUT. AS I LOOKED UP I SEEN FLAMES COMING FROM THE WINDSHIELD WIPER AREA AND SMOKE IN FRONT OF MY LIGHTS, I GRABBED MY WORK BAG AND JUMPED OUT OF THE VEHICLE, JUMPED ACROSS THE GUARD RAIL, AND IMMEDIATELY CALLED 911 FROM A SAFE DISTANCE. IN APPROXIMATELY 6-9 MINUTES THE ENTIRE FRONT END OF MY VEHICLE WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES AS I WAS ON THE PHONE WITH 911. TOOK RESPONDERS ABOUT 15 TO 20 MINUTES TO ARRIVE AND TO PUT OUT THE FIRE. AS SOON AS RESPONDERS FINALLY SHOWED, I COULD HEAR BOTH TIRES EXPLODE A FEW MINUTES APART FROM EACH OTHER. ONCE FIRE WAS SAFELY PUT OUT, THE ENTIRE FRONT END OF MY VEHICLE WAS MELTED AND THE INSIDE AS WELL WAS BEYOND RECOGNIZABLE. I WAS TOLD MY VEHICLE IS TOTALLED, OBVIOUSLY, AND I GOT A TOW TO TAKE VEHICLE TO MY HOUSE WHERE THE 2014 FORD ESCAPE IS SITTING IN MY YARD. THEN A TOW TRUCK WAS CALLED AND TOWED MY VEHICLE TO LENZI SERVICE STATION IN MONONGAHELA, PA. AFTER REPORTING THIS TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY, THE INSURANCE INVESTIGATOR DETERMINED THAT IT WAS AN EXHAUST FIRE OCCURRED DUE TO AN UNSEEN OIL LEAK. I REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO FORD ON 10/29/2018, BUT HAVE YET TO HEAR FROM THEM. THE INSURANCE COMPANY, WHICH IS USAA, HAS AGREED TO BUY OUT THE REST OF MY PAYMENT AND TOLD ME THAT I CAN GO AND BUY A NEW CAR.

I QUICKLY EVACUATED THE VEHICLE AND RAN DOWN THE HIGHWAY, WITHIN MINUTES THE ENTIRE CAR WAS IN FLAMES AND WAS LATER RULED A TOTAL LOSS. ON 13 AUGUST 2018 MY FIANCE WAS DRIVING TO OUR NEW HOME WE'RE BUYING WHEN SMOKE STARTED COMING OUT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I TOLD HER TO PULL OVER AND GRAB HER PURSE AND GET AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE. BY NOW FLAMES WERE COMING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. LUCKILY SHE HAD CRACKED OPEN THE DOOR BEFORE STOPPING BECAUSE BEFORE SHE STOPPED ALL THE DOORS AUTOMATICALLY LOCKED AND COULD NOT BE OPENED. I HAD ARRIVED AT THE SCENE AND THE CARS FRONT END HAD VIRTUALLY MELTED WITHIN 5 MINUTES. IF MY FIANCE HAD NOT CRACKED OPENED THE DOOR SHE MOST ASSUREDLY WOULD HAVE BURNED TO DEATH. IF I HAD BEEN DRIVING I WOULD DEFINITELY HAVE HAD A DIFFICULT TIME ESCAPING AS I AM A DISABLED VETERAN WITH SEVERAL MOBILITY PROBLEMS. OUR CAR WAS LESS THAN 4 YEARS OLD WITH ONLY 64000 MILES ON IT. WE NEVER EXPECTED WE MIGHT POSSIBLY BE INJURED OR DIE FROM A NEWER VEHICLE. I REALLY HOPE THAT FORD MOTOR COMPANY WASN'T AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AS WE NEVER RECEIVED ANY NOTICE OF ANY PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER WITH THIS VEHICLE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2014 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS, FLAMES WERE SEEN UNDER THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE. THE ORIGIN OF THE FIRE WAS DETERMINED TO BE THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES SUSTAINED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A TOW LOT AND DEEMED DESTROYED. I WAS DRIVING MY 2014 FORD ESCAPE FOR ABOUT 10 MIN. ON WHITNEY MILL RRD. IN ONTARIO COUNTY NEW YORK. WHEN I GOT AN ALERT ON MY DASH BOARD. IT SAID ENGINE OVER HEATING PULL OVER ( OR SOMETHING ALONG THOSE LINES) I LOOK DOWN AT THE TEMPETURE GAGE AS I WAS PULLING OVER. THE NEEDLE WAS IN PERFECT POSITION BETWEEN HOT AND COLD. AFTER I STOOPED ( ABOUT 30 SECONDS AT T HE MOST) I GOT OUT, OPEN THE HOOD AND SAW FLAMES COMING UP IN THE BACK OF THE ENGINE BETWEEN THE ENGINE AND FIREWALL. I INSTRUCTED MY WIFE TO GET HERSELF AND THE DOG OUT OF THE VEHICLE. THEN I BEGAN THROWING SNOW ONTO THE AREA WHERE THE FIRE WAS COMING FROM. IN MY OPINION KEEPING THE FIRE CONTAINED. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EVENTUALLY SHOW UP ( GUESSING 15 MIN.) THEY TOOK OVER FROM THAT POINT. SPRAYED FIRE EXTINGUISHER ON THE ENGINE AND REMOVE PIECES OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT TO GET A BETTER LOOK AT THE FIRE AND MAKE SURE IT WAS OUT. THEN A TOW TRUCK CAME AND TOOK IT AWAY.

I WAS DRIVING UP THE INTERSTATE AFTER WORK AND WHILE I WAS DRIVING I BEGAN TO NOTICE SMOKE. I LOOKED AROUND AND REALIZED IT WAS MY CAR. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE AND MY CAR STARTED FLASHING EVERYTHING ON THE DASH PANEL WAS RED AND FLASHING ENGINE FAILURE. I CUT THE CAR OFF AND THEN WENT TO TRY AND POP THE HOOD, I COULDN'T GET IT OPENED AND I LOOKED DOWN AND BEGAN TO SEE FLAMES. I CALLED 911 AND MY CAR ENGULFED IN FLAMES. I HAD A RECALL ON MY CAR FOR A PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE CYLINDER HEAD SAYING THAT IT COULD CAUSE AN ENGINE FIRE IF OILS WERE TO GET OUT AND HIT A HOT SURFACE. I GOT MY RECALL FIXED AND THEN MY CAR CAUGHT ON FIRE A FEW WEEKS LATER.

THE CONTACT IMMEDIATELY TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND EXIT THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT SAW FLAMES SHOOTING OUT FROM UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. THE CONTACT CALLED 911 AND BEFORE THE POLICE AND THE FIRE TRUCK ARRIVED AT THE SCENE, THE VEHICLE BLEW UP. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. A POLICE AND FIRE REPORT WERE FILED. THERE WAS NO INJURY, THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED THE CONTACT WITH A CASE NUMBER. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY'S TOW YARD. ADDITIONALLY, THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE DID NOT RECEIVE THE NOTIFICATION OF THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 17V209000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING).THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS ABOUT 80,000.
