I was driving the vehicle on the left lane of the freeway and the acceleration suddenly gave out. The car began to slow even when I pushed on the gas. Heat gage was fine and no lights went on. I quickly got over 4 lanes of traffic to the next exit and was able to pull over to the side of the road. White smoke began to billow out of the hood on the offramp and all the emergency light indicators came on at once. I turned the car off and the smoke turned black. I popped the hood and flames leapt out from under the hood. I jump out of the car and ran, leaving everything behind. I got safety away from the car and called 911. All of this happened within 2 minutes of losing acceleration. I typically have my two children in car seats in the car for school drop off and, [XXX] , they weren't with me. The fire overtook the front quickly and spread to the main cabin. By the time the fire department arrived (appx. 5-7 min) the car was completely engulfed. Nothing was salvaged. There is a fire report with the fire department. The police were not called. The car had gone through a full inspection and oil change one month prior and had no warning signs or issues. I lost a number of things in the car, including my purse, work items, kid's items, car seats, etc. Just after the incident, I developed a cough and severe headache that lasted two days. I also twisted my knee while running away, exacerbating an old injury. I am also dealing with acute mental health symptoms and am seeing a psychologist. I have not yet returned to work due to brain fog and exhaustion. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I purchased a Hyundai Santa Fe V6 3.3 L what's 67,000 miles on it from an owner that kept it maintained at the dealership and we have records. I kept it maintained I have records to support. The complaint is the engine started failing without notice while driving which was very dangerous because of the loss of speed while in traffic. The engine would rev up to redline which would force me to let off the gas call losing all power. My four year old daughter and I almost got plowed over from behind on the interstate by a semi truck because our engine would suddenly rev way up to redline without any notice. I contacted Hyundai about it, the engine has now died and we lost $15,000 vehicle because of it. Hyundai has ignored us regarding the dead car and the safety component. They should not be allowed to conduct a business in the United States. The amount of lawsuit stacked up against them for ripping off we Americans, is absolutely absurd. Get off [XXX] and do something about it. I'm a tax paying Citizen and you're allowed me to get [XXX] in my own backyard with regards to a [XXX] car for my family. While driving for approximately 4 hours I heard a loud pop and the car shut off with no warning. Smoke began to come from under the hood and as I opened the hood you can see a small fire coming from underneath the engine. Luckily I was able to put out the fire and had the car towed to a mechanic who informed me that I had a hole in my engine block. Had vehicle towed to dealership and contacted Hyundai about issue. I’m told their was a recall but I never received notice. There’s a case being investigated by Hyundai but as of now no details. Vehicle remains at dealership until further notice.

A hole developed in the bottom of the engine while driving, after a popping noise. Smoke started, and fluid leaked. Why was this VIN not part of the engine recall for Sante Fe Sport SUVs that was announced in May 2021? I just bought this car from a dealer in July, and they said there were no open recalls. Now the car is useless, and not sure if it is still covered by the limited used car warranty.

We pulled off the highway to get gas and noticed smoke coming from the hood. We immediately parked at the gas station and my husband, our dog and I got out of the car and within minutes the entire front of the car was in flames. Several passersby stopped and sprayed the fire with their fire extinguishers. We called 911 and the fire department quickly arrived and put out the fire, but the entire front of the car was destroyed. The front of the car melted along with the windshield from the intense heat. The police inspector came and inspected the car and took photos. The car was then towed and our insurance company took possession of the car. There were no warning lights or messages prior to the failure. The only thing we noticed was a slight hesitation in power as we climbed a hill several times in the half hour preceding the failure. My husband, my dog and I would have been in mortal danger from the fire if we had not stopped immediately and gotten out of the car. The safety of other people nearby had also been at risk if the fire department had not arrived so quickly to put out the fire as the smoke began as we were entering the gas station and parked about 50 feet from the gas pumps to escape the vehicle. We have no idea what caused the fire. The engine had been replaced by Hyundai due to a defect that had caused it to fail about 2 years prior to the current failure.

I WAS DRIVING DOWN A VERY BUSY HIGHWAY ON 12/21/20 AND MY ENGINE COMPLETELY SEIZED, NO WARNING AND INCREDIBLY TERRIFYING. THE CAR CAME TO A VERY SUDDEN STOP, AND WE WERE VERY LUCKY THAT WE WERE NOT KILLED IN AN ACCIDENT. MY CAR BEGAN SMOKING AND IT SMELLED AS IF IT WERE BURNING, WE CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT IMMEDIATELY. I WAS UNABLE TO START THE CAR AGAIN, AND I WAS ALSO UNABLE TO SWITCH IT TO NEUTRAL SO THAT I COULD GET OUT OF THE BUSY TRAFFIC. HAD TO CALL 911 AND PRAY THAT I WAS NOT HIT WHILE WAITING FOR THEM. I TRIED CONTINUOUSLY TO START MY CAR SO THAT I COULD MOVE OUT OF THE TRAFFIC, BUT ENGINE COMPLETELY SEIZED, GEAR WOULD NOT SHIFT TO NEUTRAL, AND WE WERE STRANDED IN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. ONCE COPS CAME WE HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED 40 MILES AWAY AND IT IS NOW SITTING USELESSLY IN THE DRIVEWAY.

DRIVING CONDITIONS WERE CLEAR WEATHER AND DRY ROADS WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC. WHILE TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH WESTBOUND ON INTERSTATE 4, THE VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER AND ALL THE WARNING INDICATOR LIGHTS CAME ON. FORTUNATELY, WAS ABLE TO COAST ACROSS TRAFFIC TO THE EMERGENCY LANE. TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR AND ALL THE INDICATOR LIGHTS CAME ON BUT THE CAR DIDN'T START. EXITED THE VEHICLE AND WALKED TOWARDS THE FRONT TO SEE SMOKE, AT FIRST, THEN SAW FLAMES COMING FROM UNDER THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. TRIED TO DIAL 911, BUT HAD WEAK CELL SIGNAL. APPARENTLY 911 WAS NOTIFIED. HIGHWAY PATROL ARRIVED, THE FLAMES WERE SPREADING AND GETTING LARGER. BY THE TIME THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED, THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES, WHICH REACHED ALMOST 10 FEET HIGH. THE FIRE FIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO CONTAIN THE FIRE BEFORE IT REACHED THE FUEL TANK, BUT THE VEHICLE AND ITS CONTENTS WERE TOTALLY BURNED. THE VEHICLE WAS A SHELL OF METAL AND ASH WHEN IT WAS TOWED AWAY.

THE CAR WENT OF FIRE ON HIGHWAY
NHTSA ODI 11318025
SHORT VERSION- THIS CAR STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF HIGHWAY TRAFFIC AND WOULD NOT START AGAIN, CREATING A TRAFFIC HAZARD AND REQUIRED TOWING AND HYUNDAI DEALER SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. LATER IT ALSO CAUGHT ON FIRE WHILE MOVING IN A PARKING LOT. THERE WAS SMOKE INSIDE THE CAR AND SMOKING COMING OUT THE FRONT GRILL. IT HAS SEVERAL KNOWN FACTORY MANUFACTURE KNOWN ISSUES THAT ARE WELL DOCUMENTED NATIONWIDE TO CREATE ENGINE FIRES, STALLING, SEIZED ENGINES, JUST LIKE OURS. . HYUNDAI REFUSES TO REMEDY. HYUNDAI ALSO DID A SOFTWARE UPDATE TO PREVENT ENGINE SEIZURE ON AN ALREADY DEAD MOTOR, THAT IS NOT PERFORMING ITS SAFETY FEATURES AS DESIGNED AND THEY WILL NOT REMEDY. THEY ARE CHARGING US FOR THE MOTOR THAT IS STILL DEFECTIVE, AND A SAFETY ISSUE, AND THEY WILL NOT FIX THEIR FACTORY DEFECT LEMON CAR.

I WAS DRIVING ON A TWO LINE HIGHWAY IN THE COUNTRY AND AS I WENT TO ACCELERATE THE CAR ENGINE QUIT. I COULD NOT RESTART THE CAR. AS I WAS PULLING OFF TO THE SIDE I SAW SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE ENGINE OR HOOD. I GOT MY DAUGHTER AND MYSELF OUT OF THE CAR SAFELY AND ONCE WE STEPPED AWAY FROM THE CAR I SAW AN ORANGE GLOW IN THE ENGINE AND THEN THAT GLOW BURST INTO FLAMES. I WAS IN MOTION AND I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT WITHOUT TURNING. I BELIEVE I WAS GOING APPROXIMATELY 45 MILES AN HOUR AND ACCELERATED WHEN THE CAR ENGINE DIED. WE DID SMELL GAS AS I WAS PULLING OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE COUNTRY ROAD. I DID NOT HAVE A COLLISION, AN ACCIDENT OR HIT ANYTHING IN THE ROAD. AGAIN, I STARTED TO ACCELERATE AND THE ENGINE DIED. I HAD CONTROL TO GET THE CAR OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE COUNTRY ROAD. I WAS SURROUNDED PRIMARILY BY FARM FIELDS AND NO SIDEWALKS. I WAS ON ROUTE 47 AND I WAS ON THE STRAIGHT PART OF THE HIGHWAY WITHOUT ANY BENDS. I CALLED NINE-ONE-ONE IMMEDIATELY AND THEY DISPATCHED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND THE POLICE DEPARTMENT.. THE FIRE WAS EXTINGUISHED AND THE CAR TOWED TO MY PREFERRED AUTO SHOP. THIS HAPPENED ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 11TH, 2019 AT APPROXIMATELY 5:15 P.M. THE TEMPERATURE OUTSIDE WAS APPROXIMATELY 16 DEGREES. I HAVE CALLED MY INSURANCE COMPANY AND THEY ARE SENDING OUT SOMEONE TO LOOK AT IT.

I OWN A 2013 SANTA FE AND I HAVE HAD SEVERAL ISSUES WITH IT, THE ENGINE BEING REPLACED DUE TO FAILING WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, IT WAS SERVICED WITH A FEW OTHER ITEMS DEALER FOUND TO BE NEEDED FOR SOME RECALLS. BUT NONE I CAN RECALL FOR SURE WAS REGARDING THE ENGINE ITSELF, WILL NEED TO CHECK SERVICE RECORDS. THEN LATER IT WAS THE FUEL PUMP(INJECTOR) NEED TO VERIFY SPECIFICS, BUT GAS FUMES AND SMOKE COMING FROM THE ENGINE AND THIS WAS REPLACED, THEN LATER AGAIN HAD TO TAKE IN AGAIN FOR REPAIR DUE TO SERVICE ERROR OF TUBING BEING BENT ECT WHEN INSTALLED, NOTICED THE HIGH AMOUNT OF GAS FUMES AND SMOKE FROM THE ENGINE AND INTO THE CABIN. THIS WAS A FEW MONTHS AGO, THEN NOV 9 2018 MY CAR CAUGHT FIRE AND WAS DESTROYED BY FLAMES. I HAD JUST SECONDS TO PULL THE CAR OVER AND PUT IN PARK, GRAB MY 6 YEAR OLD SON AND GET OUT BEFORE FLAMES COVERED THE ENTIRE ENGINE THEN THE ENTIRE CAR. I WAS IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD AND PULLED OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE STREET. I WOULD LIKE TO START AN INVESTIGATION REGARDING THIS MATTER, I FEAR I AND MY SON COULD HAVE DIED DUE TO THIS KNOWN AND NEGLECTED ISSUE THESE SANTA FE'S HAVE BEEN HAVING. I HAVE HAD THE CAR SERVICED AT THE DEALERSHIP SO I WILL BE ABLE TO SUPPLY THE SERVICE REPORTS AND THE CASE NUMBER FOR THE WILLIAMSON COUNTY SHERIFF REPORT OF THE FIRE AND OTHER DOCUMENTS NEEDED. LUCKILY NO ONE BEHIND ME WAS INJURED BEHIND ME SINCE ENGINE PARTS & SMOKE FROM THE OIL POURING OUT ON THE SIDE OF THE BLOCK. ONCE I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER ON THE EXIT RAMP I NOTICED MY VEHICLE WAS ON FIRE & LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE FLAMES. I CALLED A WRECKER SERVICE & UPON FURTHER INSPECTION I NOTICED A BIG GAPING HOLE IN THE ENGINE BLOCK. MY CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP CRENSHAW HYUNDAI ON JULY 3, WHERE IT HAS REMAINED & NO ONE HAS CONTACTED ME SINCE. I HAVE CONTACTED THEM ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS & HAVE MET WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER WHO ADVISED ME THAT HYUNDAI INSTRUCTED HIS TEAM TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE FOR NEGLIGENCE ON MY BEHALF WHICH THEY DID NOT FIND AND WAS BACKED UP BY ALL SERVICE RECORDS.

I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE TO WORK AND THE ENGINE STOPS AND ALL THE DASH LIGHTS ARE ON. THE VEHICLE WILL NOT EVEN TURN OVER LET ALONE START. I HAD AAA TOW THE VEHICLE TO MY HOUSE AND AFTER PUTTING A WRENCH ON THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY BOLT AND PHYSICALLY TRYING TO TURN THE MOTOR OVER I REALIZED THE MOTOR IS SEIZED. I HAD NOTICED AFTER DRAINING MY OIL DURING ALL THE PRIOR OIL CHANGES, THE VEHICLE WAS LOSING OIL. THERE IS NO SIGNS OF THE ENGINE LEAKING OIL EXTERNALLY SO IT HAS TO BE AN INTERNAL MALFUNCTION ON THE ENGINE. KNOWING THIS I WOULD CHECK AND ADD OIL AS NEEDED BETWEEN Y OIL CHANGES. THE ENGINE HAD PLENTY OF OIL BEFORE AND AFTER THE ENGINE FAILED. SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH MY ENGINE FROM DAY ONE FROM THE FACTORY. I GUARANTEE THIS ENGINE FAILED BECAUSE OF THE FACTORY THAT ASSEMBLED THE ENGINE.
