Dash reported "Engine Maintenance Required / Visit Dealer" - dealer said it was a "coolant bypass hose", not covered by any warranty. $100 part but engine-out procedure costs $800. This vehicle has less than 40,000 miles.

Car has 26K miles on it (3 year 2 months old). A light appears saying Emergency Engine Maintenance is required. After research as this error is not in manual, found out it was a failed coolant bypass valve and this was a common failure/faulty equipment but we are being asked to pay full price to repair. A simple internet search shows 100's of consumers with same issue in same model and low miles.

Coolant Bypass Valve breaks easily and in many RAV4s and Corollas. When this happens an "Engine Maintenance Required" see your dealer message comes up in the heads up display and won't go away. Makes seeing the important details of speed, miles to empty, etc on the screen impossible read. It is a known issue by Toyota and they refuse to do a recall.

The coolant bypass valve failed. If this was not repaired it could have resulted in leaking coolant which would eventually cause engine failure. The issue started with a message on the dash stating there was "engine maintenance required" on 6/28/2023. I took my vehicle to my service provider the next day, 06/29/2023. The dealer service tech knew exactly what the issue was before diagnostics because they had 4 RAV4's come in that week with this same issue. The bypass valve was replaced on this visit and I paid for the job. I have since seen many posts online with this same failure on 2019 and 2020 RAV4 models. It appears Toyota had a recall for this in 2020 for Hybrid RAV4's and some non hybrid RAV4's but apparently my vehicle and many others were not included in this recall. https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1127163_some-2019-2020-toyota-and-lexus-hybrids-recalled-for-coolant-leak-concern This recall needs to be extended for the other vehicles like mine that are currently being affected by this faulty part.

Over a month ago, I had an engine maintenance required error light come up on my dashboard. I had done some research and found that this has been an ongoing issue with multiple RAV4s. I discussed this recently with the dealership as well as contacting Toyota’s customer service and they did not address the issue as a concern and replied I would have to have the dealership run a diagnostic to see what the issue was. I already knew the answer from multiple threads I had read prior to my appointment. I ended up paying $190+ for the diagnostic of what I already knew was going to be the issue. And now I have an appointment to have the part changed next week for another $600+

My Toyota 2020 RAV 4 Hybrid accelerates in REVERSE when in drive mode and parked on an incline. My car ran over me on 2 occasions while outside the vehicle. Both times I pulled into my driveway, came to a complete stop, and believed I was parked and the car engine was off. Once I exited, I realized my car was still on, reached inside my car to push the off engine button, and the car IMMEDIATELY ACCELERATED in reverse (while in DRIVE MODE/not REVERSE or PARK MODE), knocked me down and pulled me under the front driver side tire and ran over my legs/body. The fire dept and police arrived to transport me to UCI Trauma Center. The car accelerated so fast that it knocked me down/pulled me under/rolled over my body, then rolled down the driveway, across the street, popped the curb and landed in the neighbor’s lawn – all from the force of acceleration in reverse while in DRIVE mode. This happens whenever the car is in DRIVE mode and you push the OFF button, the car accelerates in reverse when parked on an incline. This happens in parking lots as well with an incline. Toyota Service REFUSES to let me show them this product design defect and how the car accelerates in reverse while in DRIVE MODE when the "on/off" engine button is pushed off and the car is on a slight incline. It is a major hazard to the driver, passengers and community, whoever is standing outside and behind the car. Toyota REFUSES to memorialize this design problem. Our other Toyota cars require the car to be in park before you can shut it off and DO NOT accelerate in reverse when in the drive mode, only when in reverse mode. Toyota maintenance staff told me they are not allowed to memorialize the problem in writing; they won't come to my house to see what happened or let me demonstrate at their service facilities. The police officer told me he has seen this happen before, and that we were lucky no kids in the street were run over, which he said has happened before. How many others were run over?

Engine maintenance required notification came on. Car is only 3 years old. Dealership stated that the coolant bypass valve needs to be replaced and it could potentially cause a fire. Service professional at the dealership stated that this is a common issue and most of the time Toyota warranty doesn't want to repair it, also said that it should be recalled. I have also seen hundreds of people complain about this on Rav4 forums.

I took my vehicle to the dealership (Doral Toyota) on 22-Apr-23 and spoke to Mr. Rafael Sanchez (title: Toyota Advisor) because the "Engime Maintenance Required" light went off. Mr. Sanchez verified the vehicle and confirmed that the "Enginge Coolant Bypass Valve" was defective but he stated that there are 597 other owners also waiting for the same part. They were not able to resolve the issue and no estimated time to get the part.

The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that soon after he had the vehicle serviced at the dealer, the "engine maintenance required" message was displayed. The contact stated that the warning advisory remained displayed, which rendered the speedometer unviewable. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and was diagnosed with a defective coolant bypass valve. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not under recall. The vehicle was not repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The parts to repair the vehicle was on backorder. The failure mileage was approximately 66,000.

The vehicle fails to start if it has been sitting for only 2-3 days, once it failed to start just after an extra long day at work. I have it serviced faithfully every 5,ooo miles and have brought it in an additional 4 times for this problem. I filed a report with Toyota Corporate on January 5, 2023 and they had someone call the next day while I was at work. I called back 6 times but have never been able to actually speak to a case manager. I keep getting promised a call back multiple times but never received one. I even called tonight when I was promised a call, the case manager was available, but told the agent on the phone with me that he would call me by the end of the day. He never did. I called back again and was promised a call tomorrow. I keep getting the same run around. I have literally spent hours on the phone with them, many many hours at the service shop, and many hours inconvenienced by having my car battery jumped.

I was driving down the hwy doing 75mph, herd a loud bang and vehical lost all power, was passing an exit right at the moment this happened and immediately pulled out and was able to coast to a stop. The exhaust smoked for a while and it left a huge puddle of what looked like motor oil where it stoped and never started back up again. Ended up having to have it towed to a dealership where im told it threw a rod and being as how there is already a recall on this engine for possible cracks im thinking this model probably need to be added to the recall list. The car has been sitting at the dealership where the tow truck left it. There is a recall involving the possibility that cracks could form in the engine, leading to coolant or oil leaks and stalling, overheating, or engine fires. If I hadnt had both my hands on the wheel I could have lost control and killed myself or worst off if there had been cars around me I could have caused a fatal accident. In this case the problem cant be reproduced as the engine is ruined but would be happy to offer to have it inspected. I have kept up with all the manufacturers maintenance request and there were no signs of a problem prior.

On May 12, 2022 I was driving our 2022 Rav4 Hybrid. At about 10 am that morning I arrived at the Sherwin Williams store in Chandler, AZ. I applied the brakes and put the car in park. But the car did not stop! It continued to forge ahead, smashing into the building barrier and even then it kept trying to move forward. 1.The whole front end was smashed. 2.The first responders had to pry open the door to extract me from the car. 3.It was later determined that I had broken a rib. (I was lucky it was not more.) 4.The car was later declared “totaled” by the insurance company. By -standers immediately called the police. 1.The police officer confirmed that the car was in park, at the time of the accident. 2.The officer also confirmed with witnesses that the car was in park but was still moving ahead. 3.The officer recorded the witnesses’ names and contacts. 4.I have a copy of the police report, Before the accident, both my husband and I had noticed that the car had a tendency to jump ahead even after putting it in park. Since that time I have connected with other Rav4 owners on social media and have discovered that this “ jumping ahead” has been experience by a lot of other owners.

My 2020 Rav4 transmission is lagging power during acceleration and will not get up to speed, and also is stumbling and making a pulse like motion during acceleration. My safety and my family safety and others safety are put at risk when entering a highway, feeder, any busy road. We have taken it to the dealer for them to inspect it and the mechanic told us that his personal Rav4 does the same thing but doesn't understand why. It has started a few months ago I don't remember the exact time but however it is becoming more common and there are no warning lights when this problem occurs.

In the sring of this year, i lightly drove through a water filled pothole in a parking lot when all of the displays went dark for a split second and then came back on like the car had just started. I called my dealership right away and was told that maybe some water had gotten into some wiring and caused the glitch but to call again ASAP if it happened again. On Dec 9, 2021 under dry and even surfaces while making a left turn the vehicle went dark again while driving but this time took a touch longer to re-engage. I called the dealership again to report this to be looked at during a maintenance appointment. They found nothing wrong, but suggested it was a feature the car does not have was turned on and they turned it off. I was then shown the button responsible for this ... it was for automatic high beams, NOT some engine efficency button. On Sunday, 12 12 2021 i went to start the car to go to work and it was completely dead, just a small clicking sound to be heard within the cabin. i had to get the car jumped to get it started on the second turn of the key after i removed it from the first attempt. I drove it to the dealership that day and i am still waiting for results. This needs to be adressed ASAP because its a potentially dangerous if not deadly situation if it conks out at highway speeds in front of a semi.

I have had issues with my 2020 rav4. I have had kickbacks during acceleration, antifreeze/coolant loss, abnormal amount of blow-by, engine runs loud at times, car shakes when I start it, weird noise from under the hood, the dash lights and screen lights went dark once. I have been to multiple dealerships not long after I bought it and they said they “could not duplicate the issue”.. when I went to them regarding the antifreeze leak they said it is normal in new cars which I know is absolute lies. I need help as they are not willing to find the issues. I have pictures and videos to back this up.

NEW 2020 RAV4 HYBRID MAKES LOUD GRINDING NOISE SOMETIMES WHEN PLACED IN REVERSE AND EV MODE IS ENGAGED. APPEARS TO BE FAILURE OF SPRAG-TYPE DEVICE TO DISENGAGE ENGINE OR TRANSMISSION FROM ELECTRIC DRIVE SYSTEM. MULTIPLE MEMBERS OF FRANK TOYOTA SERVICE DECLARED IT TO BE NORMAL AND REFUSED TO MAKE ANY WRITTEN ENTRIES EVIDENCING THE COMPLAINT. THEY CLAIMED I WAS MISTAKEN WHEN I POINTED OUT THAT IT DID NOT BEGIN UNTIL THE VEHICLE HAD APPROXIMATELY 600 MILES ON IT.
