What 348 owners told NHTSA about the 2019 Honda Civic Type R

On Sunday morning, 8/27/2023, I entered my car after having driven it an hour prior for around 30 minutes to and from a sandwich shop. I entered the vehicle and turned the engine on without issue, and attempted to accelerate. After making it about ten feet, the acceleration on the gas pedal suddenly stopped working. I would push the gas pedal and the car would not move, nor the engine even rev. Confused, I parked and turned the car off and on again. Upon turning the car on, the engine stalled for a brief moment before slowly engaging. It was at that moment that I felt the entire car shifting back and forth, shaking. I immediately shut the car off out of fear and waited for a few moments before making a second attempt, being met with the exact same result. The next day, I entered the vehicle and attempted to turn it on again. This time, it started up and the engine engaged without any issue. However, I was now bombarded by dozens of error messages on my dashboard with systems such as emergency break, ABS, power steering, etc. giving me warnings. This morning, I had a mechanic come out and attempt diagnose the issue. He was confused when running the diagnostic tool through the systems, as he received "permanent codes" regarding several issues with the car. Taking some time to research, his opinion was that there may be an issue with the fuel pump motor. There is an open recall on 2019 Honda Civics for the fuel pump, however my specific vehicle does not seem to show up as needing this fix when I search with my VIN. After taking some time to check things, the Mechanic and myself proceeded to test drive and ensure that the car seemed safe to operate, where the mechanic approved my vehicle and encouraged me to send a report.

The AC system on the 2019 Honda Civic Sport Hatchback Touring stopped blowing cold air out of all the vents (driver and passenger) After turning off the car, only the passenger and right center vent blew a little colder air but the driver vent blew hot air. We took it into the dealership for inspection and their finding was Compressor and Condenser are dry along with evaporator core needing replacement. They also found that the freon level was low. The dealership told me that Honda extended the warranty on the compressor and condenser due to the new freon they are using which is known to cause issue with the AC system. They seen evaporator core going bad on other Civics as well but aren't sure why Honda isn't covering evaporator core yet.

The vehicle's condenser and evaporator have failed. I recently purchased my leased vehicle and at the time of purchase, I was not notified that there is an extended warranty provided upon the date of purchase if the condenser is to fail. I received a letter in the mail 2 months later after it failed about this issue. Thinking I would be covered I took my vehicle to the dealer and was notified that the condenser did in fact fail however the vehicle's evaporator has also failed and that is not covered by the warranty. The condenser was not able to be replaced without also repairing the evaporator at the same time which cost $2,000. With the results of climate change, the summers are getting hotter which imposes major health/safety issues. The letter received makes it clear if the condenser is to fail due to manufacturer issues it would be covered however if caused by an outside source it would not. It is very clear due to the condenser failing it caused the evaporator to fail OR the evaporator was also faulty already to begin with which should then ALSO be covered in the extended warranty. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. The A/C stopped working about 3 & a half years into the vehicle's life which is well past the regular warranty time frame.

I was on my way to take my baby to daycare and all of a sudden fuel gauge system problem popped up. And then everything shut off. Had to park very close to the road because I was on a small road with culverts on each side. I had fuel in it I just drove it the day before with no problems. I don’t feel that’s a very safe feature on the car. I had no warning and my baby was with me. If it’s just a fuel gauge problem why did my whole car shut off? I have researched on Honda that 2019-2021 civics had a fuel pump recall but my when I put my vin number in it tells me no recalls. Just want some answers since my car isn’t that old.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake pad had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, several months later the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed hat the brake pads had failed again and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The dealer was notified of the failure and the contact was denied service and advised to contact the manufacturer. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The contact was advised to call the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 63,000

I have noticed steering wheel stiffness/notchiness when traveling at varying road speeds. The issue is present when turning the wheel left and it takes more force than usual to return the wheel back to the normal position with audible clicks/groans heard when turning/returning the wheel to neutral. During highway driving, it takes more effort than usual to maintain the vehicle within the lane, like the car is fighting against you. I brought the car into the dealership while still in warranty and the vehicle was misdiagnosed as a sway bar coupler link issue. Having completed their repair recommendations, the issue still persisted and I brought the car back for further evaluation. The car is now out of warranty, and the dealership is stating it is an electric issue with the EPS. The way the part is engineered, the entire EPS rack must be replaced which would cost me upwards of $4200. I will be in contact with corporate Honda in regards to this, as the issue was brought to their attention while the car was under warranty, misdiagnosed, and now I am expected to pay out of pocket for the repair out of warranty. This issue has only gotten worse as time progressed and I am becoming increasingly concerned about my safety and anyone who drives my vehicle due to a manufacturer defect. Research online through the NHTSA website as well as other Honda Civic Forums show hundreds, if not thousands of other Civic owners experiencing the same issue I am and being expected to pay out of pocket for this manufacturer defect. I urge the NHTSA to take action and demand Honda to recall this product as it clearly stems from an engineering fault, not the consumer, and poses a massive safety risk to anyone driving a 2016-2021 Honda Civic.

Sticky steering at 60+ mph, more frequent after car has been running for 25 minutes. If driver isn’t expecting sticky steering, over correction of problem could cause an accident, especially at high speeds. Potential steering issues. Steering will randomly "stick", at around 60+ mph if not prepared driver could over react and thus be in an accident or cause one. The "stick" is very subtle and slight. As I am aware of it I easily corrected by bringing it back in alignment. Mechanic has performed diagnostic scan and nothing was revealed w/ the power steering. I do see that NHTSA is investigating similar issues w/ 2022 and 2023 Honda Civics. All statements are exactly as I am experiencing only my vehicle is a 2019 Honda Civic. I leased the Honda Civic from a dealer in Maryland and the first advertisement for this car was this car has lane departure warning and adaptive cruise etc. I report some incidents of inefficacy these systems in my car while it showed alarm and Honda maintenance team assured me that it works perfectly. i was driving on Fwy I-40 West in New Mexico. After wind blow my whole front shield became foggy and the system did not show any alarm that it is not working. I ended up deviated from the road and my car was totaled. The steering sticks and it’s not smooth at speeds ranging from 35 to 75 mph. It tends to become worse as the car gets warmed up. The steering wheel stick so bad that if you remove your hands from the steering wheel, it will stay in the turn, until you physically turn the wheel the opposite way. it is a very dangerous condition. This has been brought to the attention of our local Honda dealer many times. They continually say they cannot find anything wrong with the car.

Driving down interstate on 1/19/23 and car lost power. I had to move two lanes to the shoulder without getting hit by other drivers. Had car towed to local dealer and they said it was out of gas. The gas gauge said there was 44 miles to empty. On 2/16/23 I was driving to gas station and as soon as it said 44 miles to empty, the car stalled again. Unsure if fuel pump or fuel sensor issue. When I took it to the dealership the first time all they did was add 5 gallons of gas. Didn’t check fuel pump. No charge. I did pay $275 to have car towed to dealership. The second time I added 5 gallons of gas and then went to gas station and filled up.

The steering sticks in a spot while driving. You have to really pull on steering wheel which causes it to oversteer and is very dangerous especially in curves. This happens everytime the car is driven. Can be available to be inspected anytime.
