What 1,812 owners told NHTSA about the 2018 Honda Accord Plug In Hybrid

On June 24th, 2026, I received a warning for "Supplemental Restraint System Problem". The airbag Dash indicator illuminated on the dash. The issue is intermittent and the warning has appeared on five separate occasions since. The message had went away when the vehicle has been turned off and has not appear every time the car is running. It does appear mid-travel on occasion. The issue is consistent with the passenger airbag sensor failure description recall that is associated with other VIN Numbers for the 2028 Accord but my VIN is not listed in the recall.

Side airbags deployed while driving for no reason/ no collision. Yes the car is available for inspection. The car was towed to a mechanic shop, while I was picked up by an ambulance. Yes my safety was put at risk as the airbags were deployed while car was in motion, knocking me out unconscious, leaving the car in motion possibly putting others at risk as well. I finally came to and was able to press the brake before any collision could happen. There were no warning signs prior. This incident caused me dizziness , headache , and with neck pain.

Shortly after a service visit to a Honda dealer for unrelated maintenance (in Sep. 2024 with an estimated 50,000 miles), the dashboard began showing ‘Supplemental Restraint System Problem – See Dealer’. A dealer quoted $400+ to diagnose and replace what appears to be a common passenger airbag indicator sensor failure, a known issue reported by many 2018 Accord owners. I believe Honda should issue a recall due to the safety risk. I’m filing this as a VOQ complaint for ODI’s review and authorize NHTSA to share my identifying info with Honda if needed. Supporting Documentation and numerous examples of complaints from hundreds of Honda Accord owners relating to this problem: - Numerous drivers of 2018 Honda Accords have reported the identical warning (“Supplemental Restraint System Problem – See Dealer”) along with fault code B002013, intermittent dashboard behavior, and inability of dealers to resolve it consistently. - Honda’s 2024 Campaign 24‑050 identifies the seat weight sensor as directly causing SRS warnings and passenger airbag indicator failure - demonstrating this component is known to fail and trigger airbag system alert behavior, even if not yet applied to 2018 model year. - Independent coverage confirms the risk and design defect in seat sensors causing unintended SRS failures, underscoring the safety risk and Honda’s formal acknowledgment of the issue in later models. - Multiple complaints about post‑service warning lights that match this scenario (electrical system category), and public news coverage stating Honda is recalling vehicles due to faulty passenger seat sensors that may cause airbag or SRS failures. - 37 official complaints for the 2018 Accord, with no repair by dealer and failure left unresolved. One report (May 12, 2025) describes this exact issue saying the dashboard message randomly popped up and a "dealer wanted $250 diagnostic and $4,000 to repair. - My service quote attached. 07/30/25 - Over the course of 1 week, I have received three dashboard warnings "Supplemental Restraint System Problem. See Your Dealer" It goes away once car turns off. Honda of Katy states to bring in when alert still on dashboard (which will disappear when car turned off) but quoted will be required to sign a $215 diagnostic fee. No charge if it is just an error code. But $215 can be used toward repair. This is a SAFETY ISSUE and should be a SAFETY RECALL as owners should not need to pay for manufacturer DEFECTS. I can not afford to fix since still paying off the known issue of fuel injectors failing but not yet SAFETY RECALLED. Please help.

My 2018 accord sport started randomly started popping up a “supplemental restraint system problem” on my dashboard. It’s turns on and goes away randomly. I went to my local Honda dealer and I asked them about it and they had to preform a diagnostic for $250. Our Honda dealer wants to charge $4000 to repair it. I wrote to American Honda and submitted a support ticket, they asked for a new Diagnostic and charged us another $250. They called me back yesterday saying that they wont pay for the repairs unless there is a recall. How many people need to have the same issue to initiate a recall? There are a lot of complaints online for this same thing. It is airbag safety related.

Accident happened April 8th and Drivers airbag system failed me during my accident. Passenger bags went off top and bottom but the drivers foot bag went off also but the one in the steering wheel did not go off . Resulting in neck and head injuries. About two months ago, SRS/Supplmental Restrain light came on. It has been coming on/off. Took to the dealership to check; however at that time the light was off-they did not find anything wrong. ON 9/5/24, the light came on again, took to the dealership same day. They diagnosed as code B0020-13. Stated there is an "open or increased resistance in the left side airbag inflator. Installed SRS harness tester and found code to go away with SRS harness tool installed. As first step in diagnosis, recommend to replace left side airbag inflator and recheck. "

I keep intermittently getting a Supplemental Restraint System error. I have been on forums with other vehicle owners getting the same error. The dealer says it is a bad airbag while others are saying it could be two other less expensive remedies they have encountered such as a faulty cutoff indicator that gets overheated and the solders come loose as well as a faulty seatbelt buckle assembly. This is not a constant issue, it is intermittent and feel if the airbag was faulty it would be a constant error.

Brakes: Every day for past two years, on every startup car states Brake system problem, anti-lock brake problem, and TPMS problem; with it having no actual problem with brake system and message disappearing after a few minutes of driving. SRS: Intermittent display of SRS light while driving reading: airbag system or seat belt tensioners have a problem. Usually appears after Passenger airbag light intermittently turning on and off with nothing in front passenger seat. SRS light on dash doesn’t come back on after restarting car. Issue did not appear until seat belt recall last year.

On 01/27/2024 I went to Mungenast Saint Louis Honda because my SRS airbag lights keep coming on for passenger seat, I paid $89 for a diagnosis fee and found out that I was told there is a sensor malfunction that is causing this. I was told that if that light is in the airbags will not deploy during an accident. I asked them to replace this part for free, they refused stated vehicle out of warranty even though it’s a huge safety hazard and can cause a fatality if the airbags don’t deploy, advisor at dealer said not to drive the vehicle until this gets repaired. I feel it’s unfair Honda will not repair this for free with it being a safety issue.
