The battery drains quickly if the engine is not running and the key remains in the ignition even for a short period of time. From what I can tell even if you shut off the car completely, you cannot leave the key in the ignition or something is still drawing power. You must physically remove the key from the ignition. The issue stranded my family on two separate occasions requiring a jump start. Once was late at night in a secluded area, the other in a parking lot. We have two other cars from different makes and have not had this issue. In one case the car was off in a parking lot with my wife waiting for 15 minutes. In the other my daughter was listening to the radio while parked for less than 10 minutes. This Forester has the stock radio with no after market mods. The Forester drives great and feels very safe in all other respects. We truly love the car. But I have to make sure that we do not park the car and leave the key in the ignition or the battery will die. I asked my mechanic to check the battery, but he said that the battery itself tested fine. Seems like this problem has been reported elsewhere. Thanks

The oem battery in this vehicle has failed Multiple times (dozens of times), upon sitting for a few days. Nothing in the vehicle was On, it was just sitting. A couple of times it was towed to the dealership in Bozemanwhere I bought it (Gallatin Motors) for diagnosis and repairs (bad/dead battery). The battery was replaced Once per Subaru's policy. Then I was on my own for repeated, totally unexplained DEAD battery upon trying to start the car after a couple/ few days/ nothing left on. I finally bought my own new recommended Interstate Battery after repeated dead out non starts. I bought a Duracell battery maintainer/ conditioner to install in my garage, which I use when the vehicle sits for more than 2 or 3 days to be sure the darn battery will start the car. It's obvious to me there's a parasitic battery drain in this smart car, but no one from any dealership will acknowledge/ has any advice about this! This is discussed in multiple online forums. I love the car and it's smarts, but not turning Dead Off after I'm finished driving it - and draining the battery making it impossible to start again without a jump - is totally not acceptable for a "vehicle."

The battery drains when the car is turned off without anything electrical being on, possibly a parasitic battery. Have taken the car to dealership multiple time and they said the battery itself was fine.

The battery died on several occasions. I had to purchase a portable jump starter to keep in the vehicle for times that the vehicle would not start. I had the battery replaced by the dealer, but the same issue happened again. In the winter of 2020 I ended up purchasing an after market AGM (Advanced Glass Mat) battery for the vehicle.

Context: We were driving on the freeway at ~30-40mph when the car in front suddenly braked and stopped. We hit the breaks at the same time that the automatic brakes kicked in. The car stopped, as needed. Issue: After stopping, we pressed the accelerator to start the car moving again but the car revved instead of accelerating. We pulled off/slowly drifted to the side of the road and turned the car off and then back on before the accelerator started to function. This seemed like an engine problem. Safety risk: During this incident we were stopped on the freeway with no way to accelerate, which was very dangerous. We were lucky to be next to the shoulder lane. Otherwise, we would have been stuck in the middle of a freeway with a speed limit of 60mph. Inspection by Subaru result: "FOUND NORMAL OPERATION ON TEST DRIVE. NO CURRENT CODES OR RELATED HISTORY CODES. LIKELY A TEMPRARY FAULT UNDER EXTREME CONDITION. PLEASE MONITOR".

Battery seems to drain for no reason very frequently.

Since my driving has cut down drastically since Nov 2019 right before the pandemic, I have been plagued with my battery draining quite quickly. This happens when the car is not driving regularly, sometimes within a week and a half. I have to put the battery on a tender as well. This even occurred after getting the battery replaced at Subaru, and the problem coming back nearly immediately.

SUBARU ACCELERATES OCCAISIONALLY WHEN ONE HITS THE BREAK AND THE MOTOR RACES UNTIL ONE PUTS CAR IN NEUTRAL .
NHTSA ODI 11416296
'SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE LAST 3 MONTHS THE VEHICLE RANDOMLY ACCELERATES USUALLY WHEN I BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN THE CAR. I HAVE TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL TO STOP THE RACING OF THE ENGINE. IT HAPPENS AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, 5,10,20, 60. IT IS SCARY AND I HAVE TO ALLOW EXTRA ROOM WHILE DRIVING.

MY FORESTER HAD AN ISSUE WHERE I COULD NOT GET THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION ONCE I WAS STOPPED AND IN PARK. I HAD TO REPEATEDLY TURN THE CAR ON AND OFF AND MOVE THE SHIFTER BACK INTO AND OUT OF GEAR TO GET THE KEY OUT. I HAD MY CAR REPAIRED AT THE DEALERSHIP AT A COST OF $419. I FIRST HEARD ABOUT AN ISSUE LIKE THIS WHILE WAITING IN THE DEALERSHIP LOBBY LISTENING TO ANOTHER FORSTER OWNER WHO HAD THIS ISSUE. SINCE THEN OUR FRIEND AND OUR DAUGHTER HAVE ALSO HAD THIS ISSUE WITH THEIR SUBARU CROSSTREKS. THEREFORE, SINCE THIS SEEMS TO BE A SYSTEMIC PROBLEM, IS IT POSSIBLE TO HAVE THEM ISSUE A RECALL FOR THIS DEFECT?

IN SPITE OF CAREFUL MAINTENANCE AND USE I HAVE HAD AT LEAST 7 INSTANCES WHERE THE BATTERY HAD DIED. IN 4 OF THOSE INSTANCES I WAS ABLE TO JUMP START THE CAR AND CONTINUE USING IT. IN 3 INSTANCES I WAS UNABLE TO JUMP START IT, SO I HAD TO REMOVE AND REPLACE THE BATTERY 3 TIMES SINCE OWNING IT NEW IN LATE 2016. I HAVE LOST MY FEELING OF CONFIDENCE IN USING THE CAR OVERNIGHT IN REMOTE AREAS, SUCH AS WHEN CAMPING OR HIKING. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER TWICE AND THEY HAVE NOT FOUND ANY ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS TO CORRECT, SO I THINK IT IS A DESIGN FLAW.

ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS, OUR CAR STALLED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY AT 60 - 70 MPH. (2016 SUBARU FORESTER) THE FIRST INCIDENT WAS ON FRIDAY, JUNE 21, 2019 ON PA ROUTE 283. THE SECOND INCIDENT OCCURRED ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 17TH, 2021. IN BOTH CASES THE CAR ENGINE DIED WITHOUT WARNING AT SPEEDS OF BETWEEN 60 - 70 MPH. NEEDLESS TO SAY, THIS WAS A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. MY FUEL GAUGE INDICATED THAT I NEEDED GAS IN THE FIRST INCIDENT BUT I ESTIMATED THAT THE CAR HAD A LITTLE MORE THAN A GALLON REMAINING. IN THE SECOND INCIDENT, THE CAR HAD ABOUT A QUARTER OF A TANK OF GAS. I CONTACTED SABARU AFTER THE FIRST INCIDENT BUT I'M NOT AWARE OF ANY ACTION THAT WAS TAKEN. I ALSO CONTACTED THEM AFTER THE SECOND INCIDENT BUT HAVE NOT YET HEARD BACK YET. BSED ON MY RESEARCH, OTHER OWNERS OF SUBARU FORESTERS HAVE HAD A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE. I'M SURPRISED QUITE FRANKLY THAT NO DEATHS HAVE BEEN REPORTED.

KEY OFTEN WILL NOT ROTATE TO THE LOCK POSITION SO THE KEY MAY BE REMOVED AFTER VEHICLE IIS STOPPED. THE TRANSMISSION IS SET FOR PARK AND THE PARKING BRAKE IS ALSO SET AT THE TIME. THIS HAPPENS REGULARLY NOW AND HAS BEEN FOR OVER A MONTH. AT TIMES, I'VE BEEN SUCCESSFUL WHEN ROTATING THE KEY TO START AND TURN OFF THE ENGINE SEVERAL TIMES, BUT RESULTS ARE NOT CONSISTANT.

THE WINDSHIELD START DEVELOPING A CRACK AFTER THE WINTER STORM IN TEXAS AND SUDDENLY SPREAD TO THE TOP OF THE GLASS. THE CAR WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE AND IT MUST BE JUST THE COLD THAT TRIGGERED IT.

FORESTER ACCELERATES TOO FAST ON GOING FROM STOP TO MOVING TO NORMAL SPEED. THE CARS DOES NOT ACCELERATE SMOOTHLY. TOO MUCH POWER ON A LIGHT TOUCH TO SOFT ACIERATION. IF ON LIGHT SNOW IT SPINS THE WHEELS. GOING FROM IDLE ON A TURN IN SNOW IT SPINS THE TIRES. ALL ACTIONS ARE FROM A STOP OR NO ACCELERATION TO PLACING LIGHT PRESSURE ON THE ACCELERATOR.FROM A STOP THE CARS JUMPS AHEAD WITH ACCERERATION.

UNIDENTIFIED PROBLEM IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IS CAUSING THE SECOND BATTERY TO DRAIN IN MY SUBARU FORESTER. THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED JANUARY 02, 2021 AFTER IT WENT DEAD ON THE PARKING LOT BUT I HAD TO JUMP START THE CAR THREE TIMES IN ONE MONTH AFTER THAT. SUBARU CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN CAN NOT IDENTIFY THE ISSUE. THE BATTERY CHECK SHOWS BATTERY IS FINE.

KEY STUCK IN IGNITION WHEN CAR IS IN PARK.
NHTSA ODI 11394412
I WAS PREPARING TO PARK MY CAR ,IN THE PARKING LOT OF THE GIANT PARKING LOT MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE AND THE CAR WAS ALMOST AT A COMPLETE STOP WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED . UPON ACCELERATION, THE CAR HIT THE STEEL CONSTRUCTION UNIT THAT IS BUILT TO STORE THE CUSTOMER SHOPPING CARTS AND DRAGGED THIS FORWARD BEFORE CRASHING INTO THE SIDE OF A VEHICLE THAT WAS IN THE NEXT AISLE

ON NOVEMBER 7, 2020 AROUND 630PM, I WAS DRIVING ON CITY STREET GOING NW ON SUNSET IN FAIR OAKS, CA IN A FAR RIGHT LANE. I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 35 TO 40 MPH WITH ONE OTHER CARS INFRONT OR BESIDES ME. CERTAINLY WHILE I WAS DRIVING, I HEARD A LOUD BOOM. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE LOUD BOOM, I COULD NOT SEE AND REALIZED MY STEERING WHEEL AIRBAG DEPLOYED. THEN I LOOKED TO MY RIGHT I SAW A DEER LIMPING. SO I IMMEDIATELY KNEW I JUST HIT A DEER FROM MY FRONT LEFT CORNER BUMPER AFTER I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE STREET. AFTER I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE STREET I NOTICE ALL AIRBAGS IN THE CAR DEPLOYED INCLUDING THE SEATS, DASHBOARD, ROOF AND SIDE AIRBAGS. I TOOK MY CAR TO GET ESTIMATE FOR THE REPAIR. I WAS TOLD THAT BASE ON THE DAMAGE OF THE VEHICLE HIT BY THE DEER, THERE IS NO WAY THAT THE ENTIRE AIRBAGS IN THE CAR SHOULDN'T BE DEPLOYED. SO I COMAINT TO SUBARU. IT IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION. I BELIEVE HITTING THE DEER SHOULD HAVE NOT MADE THE AIRBAGS TO DEPLOYED ESPECIALLY THE ENTIRE AIRBAGS SYSTEM. THE ESTIMATE CAME OUT TO BE OVER $15000 TO FIX. MORE THAN THE VALUE OF THE CAR.

I HAVE HAD APPROXIMATELY 10 EPISODES WHERE I HAVE BEEN DRIVING AND THE VEHICLE SEEMS LIKE IT'S NOT GETTING ANY OR VERY LITTLE GAS EVEN THOUGH THERE IS PLENTY OF GAS IN THE GAS TANK . THESE EPISODES ARE INTERMITTENT AND STARTED LAST WINTER. THE ISSUE DIDN'T OCCUR OVER THE SUMMER BUT STARTED AGAIN WHEN IT GOT COLD. THE LAST EPISODE WAS ABOUT THREE WEEKS AGO ON THE HIGHWAY. I PUT MY FLASHERS ON QUICKLY AND LUCKILY AVOIDED AN ACCIDENT . UNLIKE PAST EPISODES, THE ISSUE DIDN'T RESOLVE ITSELF QUICKLY, I HAD THE GAS PEDAL TO THE FLOOR, BUT WAS ONLY ABLE TO DO A SLOW CRAWL. IT FINALLY ALLOWED ME TO GO AGAIN, BUT THEN ANOTHER EPISODE HAPPENED BEFORE I MADE IT TO MY EXIT. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN SLUGGISH SINCE THEN ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S COLD, BUT ANOTHER EPISODE HAS NOT HAPPENED AS OF YET. I TOOK IT TO THE SUBARU MECHANICS IN CUMBERLAND, MARYLAND LAST WINTER WHEN THE ISSUES FIRST STARTED. I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS BAD GAS, AND WAS CHARGED $95 FOR IT. I HAVE USED DIFFERENT GAS STATIONS, AND I'M SURE IT'S NOT BAD GAS SINCE THE ISSUE IS CONTINUING.
