The braking system failed, specifically a brake line rupture/failure that resulted in a complete loss of braking function. The vehicle is currently located at AAA or IAA facility, because it was totaled after an accident. The loss of braking function created an immediate and severe safety hazard. My wife was unable to stop the vehicle, which resulted in a collision with another vehicle. This placed my wife, the occupants of the other vehicle, including a child seated on the side of impact, and others on the road at significant risk of serious injury or fatality. The issue has been diagnosed by the Kansas City Land Rover Dealership as a faulty brake line rupture without warning. However, there are photo of the ruptured brake line, located where the aluminum line joins with the rubber line. A full independent inspection was completed. The vehicle has been involved in a police-reported accident, and insurance has been notified. The vehicle has also been transferred to a AAA or IAA facility, but is deemed totaled by my insurance. There was a visual inspection by the dealership in Kansas City, where they informed me that they found a break or rupture in the front passenger brake line. There were no warning lights, messages, or noticeable symptoms prior to the failure. The loss of braking occurred suddenly and without prior indication while the vehicle was in operation, causing a T-bone collision with another vehicle.

At 59,900 miles on a 2016 Discovery Sport that has never been in a collision and maintained by LandRover Dealership, the Left front brake line blew while my 22 year old medical student son was driving the car. Fortunately he was "in-town" and was going about 20 mph when he suddenly lost brake power and was able to stop the car by gearing down and without accident. Car towed to LandRover Dealership and L front brake line replaced for $900. Defect in brake line appears to be where upper part of brake hose was compressioned joined to metallic fitting. This defect would have escaped any inspection, and did. Contacted LandRover North America to report and ask if they would consider help with reimbursement for this manufacturing defect...which they would not: " Land Rover North America is unable to reimburse paid repairs..." Owners of LandRover Discovery Sports and other cars that use this brake line: BEWARE !!!! Imagine you or one of your kids suddenly losing brake capacity driving on the freeway !!!!! This sudden loss of brake function could have been deadly for the driver, occupant, and of course other folks on the roadway. Potentially Deadly Brake Line Manufacturing Defect in LandRover Discovery Sport 2016 with less than 60,000 miles !!!!!

The brake pedal started to feel spongy, then the car started firing alarms about low brake fluid pressure. Made it home and upon inspection found the Right Passenger Front brake line had ruptured and was spraying fluid everywhere. This is super dangerous luckily we didn't wreck. Upon research, it appears earlier models of Land Rovers had a recall for this exact issue however Land Rover mentioned that my year (2016) was not a part of the recall. Well, it looks like it should be, this will kill someone someday. I replaced the part myself and the car is back on the road. This is not a wear item and should not be failing only a few years after purchase. Official Land Rover part replaced = LR135811 Brake Hydraulic Hose

CAR WAS PURCHASED AS LAND ROVER CERTIFIED PREOWNED CAR 3/30/2019 AT 35133 MILES. CAR WAS DRIVEN FROM CITY OF BAKERSFIELD TO CITY OF INGLEWOOD/LOS ANGELES ON 5/5/2019 WHEN IT STOPPED AT COSTCO SHOPPING GROUND, WITH MESSAGE ON THE SCREEN READING :SPECIAL PROGRAM OFF". LAND ROVER ROADSIDE SERVICE WAS ACTIVATED, THAT CALLED AAA INDEPENDENT TOWING VEHICLE THAT TOWED THE CAR. ON 5/6/2019 IT WAS TOWED TO LAND ROVER RETAILER HORNBURG IN CITY OF SANTA MONICA. ON 5/8/2019 THE SERVICE LOCATION CENTER TEXTED ME WITH INFORMATION THAT "IT APPEARS THE CAR IS NOT STARTING BECAUSE OF THE BRAKE LINE THAT'S BEEN CUT. THE SENSOR FOR THE BRAKE PEDAL IS NOT ACTIVATING DUE TO THIS, SO IT WON'T LET THE ENGINE START. WE NEED TO REPLACE THE RIGHT FRONT BRAKE LINE THAT HAS BEEN CUT, WHICH WOULD COST $725.46." ON FOLLOW UP TEXTING, THE TECHNICIAN AT LAND ROVER SANTA MONICA WROTE THAT "THE REQUEST FOR REPAIR AUTHORIZATION WAS REJECTED BY LAND ROVER SINCE IT'S OUTSIDE INFLUENCE, NOT A DEFECT OF THE CAR" ON 5/9/2019, HE WROTE AGAIN THAT "FOR A LACK OF A BETTER WORD, WE'D SAY 'MALICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES." HE MAILED A PICTURE OF THE CUT BRAKE LINE, FOLLOWING A VOICE DISCUSS WITH ME, HE INQUIRED IF "I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH ANYBODY THAT CAN DO THAT, HENCE I BECAME SUSPICIOUS, THAT A CPO CAR I JUST BOUGHT WITH CURRENT MILEAGE OF 35971 (DRIVEN ABOUT 600, NO DMV REGISTRATION PLATE NUMBER YET, HOW COULD SUCH BRAKE LINE CUT. THE CAR I DROVE FROM BAKERSFIELD TO LOS ANGELES/INGLEWOOD, IT DID NOT STOP ON THE FREEWAY OF INTERCITY STREET AND I DROVE IT TO A SHOPPING CENTER WHILE IT JUST STOPPED WITHOUT WARNING EXCEPT THE MESSAGE ON THE DASHBOARD SCREEN OF "SPECIAL PROGRAM OFF". I REALLY DON'T UNDERSTAND OF CPO FROM 35133 MILES PURCHASED 3/30/2019, TO 35971 MILES INCIDENT DATE 5/5/2019.

I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, SUDDENLY THE 'CRITICAL WARNING MESSAGE' AND 'BRAKE' LIGHTS CAME ON. THE CAR LOST POWER QUICKLY, WITH THE MOMENTUM THE CAR RAN FEW HUNDRED FEET TO STOP. THEN, THE WORD 'GEARBOX FAULT' AND 'BATTERY CHARGE' APPEAR. THE ENGINE STILL RUN, BUT I WAS COMPLETELY STUCK, COULD NOT ROTATE THE GEAR. WHEN I TRIED TO TURN ON AND OFF THE ENGINE AND ROTATE THE GEAR SOME TIME THE 'CRITICAL WARNING MESSAGE' AND 'BRAKE' LIGHTS CAME ON AND SOMETIME THE WORD 'GEARBOX FAULT' AND 'BATTERY CHARGE' CAME ON, BUT STILL COULD NOT ROTATE THE GEAR. AFTER 10 MINS, SUDDENLY, I COULD ROTATE THE GEAR INTO NEUTRAL AND PUSH THE CAR OUT OF TRAVEL LANE WITH THE HELP OF POLICE OFFICERS. IT HAPPENED TWO TIMES, THE FIRST TIME (7/25/2016) JUST TWO DAYS AFTER I HAD THE CAR (200 MILES). AFTER THREE VISITS, LAND ROVER SAID THE PROBLEM WAS REPAIRED WITH COMPUTER RE-SETTING AT THE FIRST TIME, THEN PART REPLACEMENT AT THE SECOND TIME AND FINALLY COMPUTER SETTING AT THE LAST TIME. NOW, THE PROBLEM HAPPENED AGAIN ON 10/8/2016 (3000 MILES). I FEEL I AM LUCKY. THE FIRST TIME, I WAS ON OUTSIDE LANE ON I-4 (ORLANDO), I COULD GET OUT OF TRAFFIC QUICKLY. THE SECOND TIME, I WAS ON A LOCAL ROAD: SUMTER BLVD. (NORTH PORT), I COULD NOT GET OUT OF TRAVEL LANE, BUT THE CAR BEHIND ME HAD ENOUGH TIME TO STOP, CRASH ALMOST HAPPENED.

How to use these: a complaint is one owner’s report, filed voluntarily and published unverified. Patterns matter more than any single story. If several owners describe the same failure at similar mileage, put that system at the top of your pre-purchase inspection list. Back to the full 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport (7 Seat) verdict →
