What 802 owners told NHTSA about the 2016 Kia Soul EV

Kia didn't thoroughly inspect my car in response to recall 19V101which would have caught a damaged catalytic converter. Kia updated the code in 2019 but did not replace my catalytic converter and is now unwilling to honor the recall repair necessary. My catalytic converter is now damaged with the same symptoms identified in the recall. Kia is insisting that I cover the costs associated with the repair.

My family decided to purchase a 2016 Kia Soul and it was a great car until it stalled on me on a highway, and funny enough I was helping my father on his vehicle on the highway. I had this car towed to Raceway Kia at Freehold NJ , who provided a KDKS software update to the engine. A short time later, the car had to be sent again and they performed an oil consumption test. By this time, my car was near the warranty expiration of 100k and they stated that since I performed this, that if there were problems with my vehicle, they would fix it. Fast forward and now I am experiencing a knocking in my car and it is losing acceleration/ power. I sent my Kia Soul to another dealer, Matt Blatt Kia at Toms River. They diagnosed the engine and stated that there were no engine problems or codes and that I need a new catalytic converter that costs over $3000. This is not fair because there is research that supports that because there is engine problems with this model, this could contribute to catalytic converter problems. I had my car for almost a year and kept up with the oil changes and other minor work on the vehicle. Then all of a sudden my oil light kept coming on when I had gotten an oil change two days before. I had a mechanic check under the hood and they stated it was no oil in the car i than told them that I just got an oil change two days ago and that I never had an problem with this before every since than I had to constantly get oil changes because the car would run down quickly. I took the car to Kia for them to take a look at it and found out I got a recall on the catalytic converter system and they claim to have fixed it. Kia stated there was no oil leak that would cause the car to continue to need oil I told them how many times I had to get top offs and oil changes. The car started knocking loudly and shutting off in the middle of driving and next thing I know a mechanic is telling me that my motor is gone.

The catalytic converter needs to be replaced. This 2016 Kia Soul has been leaking or burning oil for over a year. I would have to either get my oil changed or put more oil in around 3,000 miles (It recommended to get an oil change every 5,000 miles with synthetic oil). I don't see oil on the ground, so it's either burning oil or leaking into the catalytic converter or elsewhere. I had the PI2002B done, but my car did not qualify for the SC176, 20V750, or SC200 recalls by one year. All of these recalls could affect the engine and catalytic converter. I have also brought it into the dealership at least four times in the last 2.5 years because the check engine light came on. The first time is when they performed the PI2002B (Product Improvement Campaign). Two times they said I needed a new gas cap. The last time they said I needed to have a consumption test done. 100 miles into the consumption test my car became extremely sluggish and made a slight rattling noise at 65 mph. I think the 2016 should have been under the aforehand recalls.

The oil pressure warning light came on only after the damage was done. Horne Kia in Gilbert Arizona, where I purchased the vehicle, inspected it and found this to be true. However Horne Kia and Kia corporate will not repair or authorize repair, respectively. I was told to continue driving it until the engine is completely destroyed in order to have it repaired...WHAT. So I'm being told that the engine will definitely seize-up and fail leaving me stranded; this is a safety nightmare. What if I'm driving on a highway when this happens. What if the engine failure causes me to lose control of my vehicle and cause who knows what. This not only puts me at risk, it puts others driving around me at risk as well; not to mention passengers that may be in my vehicle. Now there's gasoline mixing with the oil. Beside all of the aforementioned, now there's also a risk of engine compartment fire and loss of life.

Vehicle experienced a sudden loss of power followed by a P0420 error code. After scheduling an service inspection (5 weeks out was the soonest appointment available), it was determined the catalytic converter had failed again (It was replaced under warranty about 45,000 miles ago). I have called KIA repeatedly for over a month now to get a warranty approval but it is still under "management review". I have talked to several people at Kia corporate with no results. I have been forward to the supervisor's email twice but they will not call me back.

Traveling on the interstate five days ago, the vehicle (2016 Kia Soul) started knocking and I could not accelerate. Was able to safely get off the road and had the vehicle taken to the closest dealership. Vehicle has had significant oil consumption. Diagnostic test concluded ignition coil replacement was needed due to code P0302. Other recommended action was fuel induction service. I've read online these are short term measures that generally do not work and that the knocking, inability to accelerate, and the check engine light coming on will recur. Last November, I had the software patch PI20002B ECU update. Since February of 2023, I have had three incidents due to the known problems with the engine for this model year. Why won't Kia and the dealers simply replace the darn engine?
