What 1,686 owners told NHTSA about the 2016 Ford F-150 Supercab Diesel

The frame holding the panaramic moonroof in place has failed and cracked in two places leaving the panaramic moonroof loose and must be repaired immediately. The moonroof is apt to fly out or drop inside while driving on the interstate highway causing injury or death to the driver, passenger or others on the road. There have been reports noted online of the moonroof exploding while driving at high speeds due to the rattling because the moonroof is not secured properly due to the frame being cracked. This is a safety issue and must be recalled by Ford Motor Corporation immediately to make this repair for the consumers.

I was driving at a slow speed on a dirt road directly into the sun when it was just rising. The conditions of the sky were slightly hazey. The entire windshield turned into a bright white light. (from right to left and top to bottom covering every square inch of the windshield) I could no longer see outside in front of me. I stopped. It was brighter than the sun 100 fold. No matter where I moved, the bright light of the windshield did not allow me to see. I had to roll down my window and place my head outside the vehicle to keep from driving off the road and into a different direction about a mile up the road. After going in a different direction everything was all right. I am concerned for other drivers that they may encounter this similar situation possibly causing an accident. My conclusions were: 1. The direct sunlight into the multiple star pits caused from highway/roadway gravel onto the windshield combined with windshield wiper fluid created the bright light that made the vehicle unsafe and undrivable. 2. The angle positioning of the windshield had something to do with the bright light... 3. The use of armoural on the dashboard as a preservative caused a chemical reaction onto the inside of the windshield (greasing the inside of the windshield contributing to the flash of bright light across the windshield). I will keep the windshield for 72 hours for your inspection. I plan on having the windshield replaced. This is a very dangerous situation. I managed to get off the road and even tried swapping fuses, but the wipers still wouldn’t turn on. I had my child in the car and this was a very dangerous situation! Ford is telling me that the wiper recall doesn’t cover my truck. Help!

Upon entering my truck, I noticed the rear (powered) window seemed to be open, despite leaving it in the closed position. Upon closer inspection, I noticed the glass and trim were not correctly seated and it appeared as though the adhesive that holds the parts had failed (true cause unknown as I didn't observe the occurrence). This is a safety issue because 1) I have a young child who rides in the rear seat of the vehicle, and the glass moves freely since it is off-track. 2) the electric components are still working, and if my spouse (who doesn't drive my truck often) were to forget there was an issue, moving the glass which is not correctly articulating in its track could cause it to break (I am uncertain as to whether or not it is shatter-resistant). 3) we have had a lot of rainy weather, and due to the exposure of electrical components to the weather, could cause a short or electrocution if touched. 4) the glass could be easily pushed inward or aside from outside of the truck leaving it more vulnerable to break-in or theft. This issue is currently available for inspection upon request however, I will be getting it repaired within the next few days as it cannot wait. I have not yet had a dealer confirm the issue, nor had it inspected by any other party. I am aware of at least a few dozen 2015-2020 Ford F150 owners having this problem, it seems to be a known issue among owners of these vehicles. There were no warnings or vehicle generated messages. I respectfully request this issue be investigated because of safety concerns and evidence of widespread component failure. Thank you for your time.

The windshield wipers seem to work intermittently. I turn the wipers to its highest setting and it does not run. It seems to be working with the rain sensing but only after passing the first tick on the wiper arm.

The contact owns a 2016 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving 20-25 MPH, he heard water sounds coming from the body of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the door drains were inspected and drained; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to a second dealer, Ford Service (1401 S Beacon Blvd, Grand Haven, MI 49417), where it was diagnosed that the sunroof rivets were installed incorrectly, causing water intrusion into the sunroof and curtain air bags. The dealer diagnosed that the sunroof, the sunroof frame and the curtain air bags needed to be replaced. The dealer forwarded the diagnostic report to the manufacturer, and the manufacturer agreed to partially cover the repair cost. However, the contact stated that the failure was due to a Manufacturer’s defect; therefore, the manufacturer should completely cover the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 18,500.

On 3/11/2023, I used my vehicles, 2016 Ford F-150 Platinum, remote start feature before leaving work. When I got in my truck to go home, I noticed that the rear window of my vehicle was shattered. After some further investigation, it appears the rear defroster heat element malfunctioned, and shattered the rear window. This caused glass particles to circulate within my truck, as there was nothing protection wind from coming in the rear window area. Upon further research, it appears that this has happened to numerous other vehicles of similar make/model/year. I have contacted Ford and am awaiting their response. This is a safety feature and a malfunction of their vehicle, therefore they should be responsible.

Rear window spontaneously shattered in driveway. Approximately 30 degrees outside temperature, vehicle was started, rear defrost engaged, driven approximately 1/2 block to another driveway. When leaving driveway to enter roadway, rear window shattered with a loud pop. No internal or external impact to the rear window to cause the glass to shatter. No other cars, people, work equipment, mowers, etc were present. My safety was impacted by the startling, loud noise, glass shards exploding into the cab, visibility was greatly impacted and sub-freezing temperatures were now free to enter the cab with no ability to sustain safe cabin temperature. I am having the glass inspected and replaced. No police involved Insurance deductible is higher than replacement cost so they are not involved. There were no warning lights or any sign of symptoms prior to the glass explosion. A quick google search would indicate this is a common and dangerous problem. This is clearly a defect in either the glass itself or the rear defrost system. There should be a safety recall before people are hurt or killed by this defect.

Wipers will not shutoff, continue to wipe at the slowest setting. This is occasionally intermittent and sometimes does not start to be an issue until the wipers are engaged once, then they will not shutoff.

Back window shattered as a result of a rear defrost malfunction. Outside temperatures were around 20 degrees F so I used my remote start to warm up my vehicle before leaving. Upon entering the vehicle approximately 5-7 minutes later I noticed an odd smell that I can only describe as electronics overheating or burning. Then about 5 minutes into my drive on a smooth road and without any other incident I experienced a very loud popping noise and immediately pulled over to investigate. What I noticed right away was that the entire back window (with the exception of the small power window) was shattered and was starting to fall into my vehicle. When calling for a quote to replace my window, two of the shops both indicated that this is a know problem with Ford F150's due to the rear defroster malfunctioning. I have a crew cab F150 and regularly use it to transport my 3 young children, and luckily they were not with me on this trip, but I am very worried that this could have resulted in shards of glass right by their heads where they are sitting. Other than the odd smell I noticed that day, there were no messages or symptoms of this problem. I live in a cold climate and often use the remote start without any similar issues.

Was told the Steering Wheel Control Module needed replaced. Was driving and the blinkers stopped working, window washerfluid button doesn’t work, and anything pertaining to the hazard switch is not working. This is very dangerous to not have working blinkers and windshield wipers not working as they should. Was told that the part is on back order until December or January. Hopefully we will see it before that since it’s a primary vehicle and I don’t feel safe driving it with my children in the car.

We discovered water in the glove compartment after rain. The passengers identified headliner has clearly had water issues prior to our purchase of this vehicle used. We applied silicone caulking to the top, passenger side windshield. After further rains, the water seems to be collecting under the dashboard and spills out when turns are made or velocity changes. Further silicone caulking of the windshield may be preventing leakage, but we are not fully assured of that.

Rear window spontaneously exploded on July 8th around 11:00am. My truck was parked and not driven for two days. The rear window exploded and shattered. The glass was everywhere, In the truck bed and all over the cab. The seats and carpet have shards of glass embedded in them. I called Tom Masano Ford in Shillington PA. Spoke to Lydia a service advisor. She told me that Ford would not cover the repair/replacement of the rear window. She stated that Ford would not take any responsibility for this safety issue.
