Shortly afterwards (1-2min) the backseat filled with smoke. I had my family immediately exit the vehicle and the rear window exploded. I checked the area and found an electrical wire draped over the rear passenger seat. It was melted and had clearly exploded up and over the seat. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Yes, had my children remained in the vehicle, they would have been sprayed with glass or burned from the electrical short. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? No, however, I looked online and found this has happened to others. I called Ford service center and they informed me their were no recalls out on the truck. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No. However, Glass doctor performed the repair since Ford outsources their glass repair work Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No

I HAD JUST DROPPED OFF MY SON AT DAYCARE AND TURNED ON THE DEFROSTERS. I WAS SITTING IN THE PARKING LOT AT WORK, AND THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY STATIONARY AT THE TIME. A RANK, BURNING SMELL FILLED THE TRUCK AND I IMMEDIATELY TURNED IT OFF. SECONDS LATER A LOUD "POP" OCCURRED AND THE REAR WINDOW COMPLETELY SHATTERED. THERE ARE SMALL PIECES OF GLASS THROUGHOUT THE BED AND INSIDE THE BACK SEAT. THANK GOD MY CHILD WAS NOT IN THE VEHICLE WHEN IT HAPPENED, AND THAT I TURNED OFF THE CAR BEFORE THE ENTIRE THING ENGULFED IN FLAMES.

REAR DEFROSTER SHORTED OUT. OVERHEATED AND CAUGHT THE PLASTICS ON FIRE. THE WINDOW THEN SHATTERED FROM THE EXCESS HEAT FROM THE REAR DEFROST. THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION ON THE HIGHWAY. OUTSIDE TEMP WAS 28 DEGREES. REAR DEFROST AND HEAT WERE ON FOR THE VEHICLE. WHILE TRAVELING, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SMOKE INTERNALLY. THE CAR WAS PULLED OVER, AND SHUT OFF. THE SMOKE STOPPED AND THE WINDOW SHATTERED. THE PLASTIC AND SEAT SURROUNDING THE REAR DEFROST CONNECTION TO THE WINDOW WERE MELTED.

I HAD JUST PUT MY TRUCK IN PARK WHEN A CAR PULLED UP AND SAID THAT MY ENGINE WAS ON FIRE. WHEN I GOT OUT TO LOOK, THE FIRE WAS ROLLING OUT FROM UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE WHEEL WELL. AS WELL, THERE WAS EITHER A FLUID OR MELTED PLASTIC DRIPPING DOWN TO THE ASPHALT THAT WAS ALSO ON FIRE. THE FIRE APPEARED TO PUT ITSELF OUT, FOR THE MOST PART, PRIOR TO THE FIRE COMPANY ARRIVING WITHIN THE NEXT 10 MINUTES. I HAD, WHAT I BELIEVED TO BE AT THE TIME, RECALL WORK DONE BY MIKE RAISOR FORD IN LAFAYETTE, IN, LESS THAN 1 YEAR AGO. IN THAT RECALL WORK, I THOUGHT THE BLOCK HEATER WAS DISCONNECTED SO AS TO PREVENT AN ENGINE FIRE SUCH AS THIS. NOW, I AM HAVING DOUBTS AS TO WHETHER THIS WAS COMPLETELY DISCONNECTED. THE INSURANCE COMPANY DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE CONTACT ALSO MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BACK IN FEBRUARY 2019 UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V568000 (SEAT BELTS, STRUCTURE) BY THE DEALER (DAVID MCDAVID FORD FORT WORTH, 300 W LOOP 820 S, FORT WORTH, TX 76108). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AFTER THE FIRE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 48,000.

IN ABOUT MARCH OF 2017 THE SYSTEM STOPPED FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AT ANY TIME. AT THAT TIME IT HAD ABOUT 37,000 MILES ON IT. BY THE TIME I COULD GET IT TO THE FORD DEALER IT HAD ABOUT 39,000 MILES. FORD DENIED ANY OBLIGATION TO REPAIR. SOME OF THE MAJOR REASONS I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE WERE TO ABILITIES OF THE SYNC III SYSTEM SUCH AS: (1) THE GPS MAP SYSTEM AND THE ABILITY TO INPUT DESTINATIONS AND RECEIVE DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS, (2) THE HANDS FREE BLUE TOOTH TELEPHONE CONNECTIONS, (3) THE BACKUP CAMERA, AND THE TOUCH SCREEN MENU. ALL OF THESE WERE IMPORTANT SAFETY FEATURES. NONE OF THEM WORK AND FORD WANTED $1,500.00 TO REPLACE THE "APIM" MODULE, WHICH PURPORTEDLY WOULD MAKE IT WORK AGAIN. IN ADDITION, WHILE BACKING IN TO A PARKING PLACE, IN ABOUT NOVEMBER OF 2017, I COULD NOT SEE A POLE SET IN CONCRETE BECAUSE OF MALFUNCTION OF THE CAMERA, AND BACKED INTO IT, DAMAGING MY BUMPER TO THE TUNE OF ABOUT $1,200.00 REPLACEMENT COST. WORSE YET, THAT COULD HAVE BEEN A CHILD OR OTHER PERSON. OCCASIONALLY THE BACKUP CAMERA WORKS, BUT STAYS ON WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE STREET.
