What 342 owners told NHTSA about the 2016 Chrysler 200

Airbag light has came on with dealership replacing the wiring harness under the seat twice. The light is now on for a third time. After online forum research, I learned that wiggling the wiring connections can get the connection back and airbag light to go away. It worked. Numerous complaints of loose wiring. Purchased the vehicle brand new currently with 125k miles. First repair was free. Second was out of warranty and I had to pay for parts.

He then called EMS. 1) How fast was the customer traveling when they became aware of the fire? I was at a stop light when I was notified by another vehicle that my car was on fire. I had no idea my car was on fire previously. Once I pulled over I starting seeing smoke come out the vents. I was on the highway on my way to the destination and possibly going 60 MPH but didn’t see any smoke while on the highway. 2) What was the recent usage of the vehicle before the incident? Was it used that day? How long had the vehicle been driving before the incident? The GOV was used maybe once or twice every two months. Yes it was used that day for about 25 minutes before the fire was noticed. 3) Did any vehicle operator notice anything wrong or unusual about the vehicle prior to the incident? Not to my knowledge 4) Any after-market equipment installed? Not to my knowledge

The Chrysler 200's engine keeps suddenly shutting off while driving, mainly while making turns on streets and freeway on/off ramps. There are no warning lights, sounds, or visual cues to indicate any sort of problem. Sometimes the vehicle may just stall, most other times it just turns off and asks that I switch the shifter to park to then turn the vehicle back on. This issue is very concerning as it’s dangerous for the vehicle to shut down in traffic and could prove fatal.

I've had several issues with the airbag warning light coming on telling me to service the airbag. While the car was covered under the warranty the dealership replaced the part at least three times and eventually told me to stop digging under my driver seat as the wiring harness for the air bags was located there. As anyone with kids may know that isn't the easiest thing to do. Bit even more alarming is the fact that if there is an accident my airbags may malfunction since the warning light is on. And the cost to get it fixed it way to high for me to pay especially knowing that it's just going to happen again in a few months since it's already been replaced a number of times.

My car gave me a service airbag message when I started it on July 31st. I already had an appointment scheduled with a Chrysler dealer to resolve an unrelated recall issue, so I asked them to look into what was causing the airbag issue, as well. They told me that the jumper wiring needed to be replaced on both sides of the vehicle in order to resolve diagnostic code B0020-13. They quoted me over $2,800.00 to fix the issue and told me that my airbags would not go off if I were to get in an accident unless the repairs were made. I am unable to afford this, so I contacted FHA customer service to seek cost assistance, but was told my car is too far out of warranty. My car only has 78,000 miles, so I should not have any safety issues with it. I was told by the technician that this is a common problem with my vehicle. Seeing as this is a safety issue and it is a common issue, I believe it is worth investigating to determine if it is caused by a manufacturing defect. I, like most people, cannot afford this costly of a repair, so I am putting my life at risk each time I drive my car, which I now know will not deploy the safety bags if I get in an accident. To make matters worse, I had to pay a $150.00 diagnostics fee just to find this out.

Purchased this used 2016 Chrysler 200 from Dan Derry in Cedar Falls. The next day my son was driving this car the air bag light came on. Contacted dealer and they were not aware of any air bag issues with this car and told us we bought AS IS. From what I am reading on line Chrysler has know about this for some time. I see this has a huge safety issue that sounds like it is pretty expensive to fix. And even the people that have forked over the money to fix are still having issues. Took this to our mechanic and they are suggesting to take to dealer as there is a TSB on this issue. Not sure why a safety issue that has nothing to do with how the car is driven but how it was manufactured ends up being the responsibility of the sucker that bought the used car off a dealers lot.

My car is using an excessive amount of oil. I did an oil change on April 4th and by May 4th my car was telling me I need an oil change. I had not even driven it the recommended 3,000 miles before doing an oil change. 3 ongoing problems. 1. Our car dies while driving. This is Dangerous. Tonight is the 3rd (maybe 4th) time in about a year or year and a half or so. The first two times modesto jeep dodge chrysler determined it was too low on oil (but the mileage was much less than when oil change was due according to my oil change sticker. Also very dangerous because there is never an oil light that comes on the dashboard to warn oil low. About 3 months ago it died 500 miles before oil change supposed to be due. Tonight it died again with no warning. Oil change is not supposed to be due for another 1000 miles. Very scary. No warning light. 2. After I'm stopped at a stop sign or light then during acceleration car jerks. 3. I've had this car about 3 years. The airbag light came on shortly after I owned the car. Never been in an accident in this car.

I was driving and stopped started taking off and my car shut off in the middle of the road as I was crossing a busy intersection. It would not allow me to cut my hazards on. Then after a couple mins it started back up. The engine light came on and then went away. I received a letter in the mail from FCA on 5/17/21 stating powertrain software needed to be updated. This needs to be labeled as a safety hazard this could have caused an accident. This vehicle shuts off in the middle of the street randomly from this and the dealer is telling me they cannot fix this until Friday. I spoke with someone at the FCA recall center who advised this is doing this because it needs that software update this needs to be labeled as a safety recall not an update.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT YET REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS INFORMED OF THE FAILURE BUT OFFERED NO ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 32,000.

I RECEIVED A CALL FROM DEALER AND WAS ADVISED THAT WIRING HARNESS FOR THE AIRBAG NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND WILL NOT BE COVERED SINCE MY VEHICLE IS OUTSIDE OF THE WARRANTY. THE REPAIR IS APPROXIMATELY $1200.00. I DO NOT BELIEVE AS A CUSTOMER I SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS REPAIR. IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND ITS NOT A NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR ISSUE AND I DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE AIRBAG OR HARNESS TO WHERE I WOULD OF DAMAGED IT. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING AND PURCHASING VEHICLES FOR THE LAST 30 + YEARS AND NEVER HAD ANY SUCH ISSUE. I HAVE CONTACTED CHRYSLER CUSTOMER SERVICE WITH NO SUCCESS INTO TAKING THIS SERIOUSLY. I WOULD LIKE TO PROVIDE A FORMAL COMPLAINT ON THIS AND SEEKING TO SEE WHAT MY OPTIONS ARE IN THIS SITUATION.
