Operator reported that under braking, they lost all power assist to the brake pedal and brake pedal was extremely hard to push. This resulted in extended stopping distance and difficulty slowing the vehicle down. It was found that the vacuum pump had failed. We are a large utility fleet, and this issue has occurred a number of times to our Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon vehicles and we deem this a safety issue. These incidents have been reported to the OEM and we recently received the attached reply, "We submitted a “Speak up for Safety Campaign” to our internal quality team for review. These reviews are conducted to determine if there is a manufacturing or design defect that could impact quality. After review, the case was closed with no action to be taken." The operators receive no warning prior to the failure.

During a preventative maintenance inspection, the mechanic found oil coming from the vacuum pump. Due to the number of failed vacuum pumps the fleet has been experiencing, the mechanic decided to replace the pump in order to avoid a vacuum pump failure during operations.

As I was turning into a parking lot, my power steering completely locked up and I couldn't make the full turn. I had to jump up on a curb to get out of the way. The warning lamp came on as it locked up. I didn't find a recall on my vehicle for this issue but found one that had gone our for the 2015 model for a similar issue.

Driving on interstate after work, stablitak and traction control lights come on and power steering goes out. This is a known issue and recall for the 2015 model with the EXACT same steering rack 84670808 with recall N202325410.

Mar 18, 2024SteeringSuspensionElectrical system

The stabilitrak and power steering goes out intermittently. This is the same part and part number as the ones that were recalled on the 2015 models. It makes no sense for the 2015 part to be recalled and not rhr 2016 when it’s the same problem with the same part number. This causes the steering to freeze and almost caused a fatality without any warning. Please look at the 2015 Colorado recalls to see the documentation This has been happening for the past year and now it’s become more common

Power steering fails. Will reset upon restarting the car but will fail again later down the road. This was a known defect in the 2015 models, and recalled, but the 2016 models (using the same component as the 2015) have not been recalled. The power steering can fail at any time, putting mine and others' lives at risk. No warning lights, just power steering failure.

Feb 24, 2024Steering

Power steering and stabilitrak system randomly goes out while driving. It will reset after turning the car off and then back on. After doing some research I discovered that the 2015 model was recalled for the same issue. The 2016 has the same parts and build as the 2015. Yet there is not a recall on this year model yet. Someone is going to die because of the suddenness of this issue.

The steering lost power. It has happened three times now. It could be moved to the side but only with a lot of manual turning. We took it to the dealership after the first time. They wouldn’t do anything, not even an assessment. I am blind and my caregiver drives me with this vehicle. I need it to be safe not only for myself but for those who help me as well.

How to use these: a complaint is one owner’s report, filed voluntarily and published unverified. Patterns matter more than any single story. If several owners describe the same failure at similar mileage, put that system at the top of your pre-purchase inspection list. Back to the full 2016 Chevrolet Colorado verdict →
