What 519 owners told NHTSA about the 2015 Nissan Rogue Select

While driving the vehicle a burning smell became present. I pulled over into the nearest parking lot. Smoke started to come out of the engine compartment and increased over a short period of time. Fire flames came through the hood of the car. I called 911 and the fire department had to put out the flames. The car got towed and is sitting in a tow yard pending an insurance inspection. My safety was at risk because the car was engulfed in flames. Not sure if this problem has been reproduced, but I have seen reports of similar Nissan vehicles catching on fire in a similar manner. There were no warning signs that there was an issue with the car and I kept the maintenance of the car up to date. Dashcam installed in car captured me pulling over, the car begin to smoke and flames coming up from the hood.

I could not see the truck because of the position of the sun, and when I did see the parked trash truck, I swerved to miss it but struck the left rear of the parked trash truck with the right front of my vehicle going 35mph. Air bags did not deploy nor did the seat belt lock. I was tranferred to the hospital and sustained 4 broken ribs and an abrasion on my right elbow. Police department and EMS did see that air bags did not deploy. Police report shows code for the air bag and seat belt malfunctions. No warning messages etc of any kind showed up.

The lift gate is not staying up now. This model only opens from the lift gate release on the door (not on the key Fob). I am hurt but this could have been so much worse. I saw a recall # online for this issue - recall # 16V219000, but was told there isn't a recall of this type on my vehicle.

Air bag light will not go out. Had it “repaired” twice by Nissan dealership in past 2 years. Light again on and will not go out. I saw a couple of recalls pertaining to air bag sensors (16V911000, 16V244000, 22V024000) but was told these do not apply to my VIN. Also, since August 1, 2023, the rear hatch back door will not stay up and came down unexpectedly on my head. I saw there was a recall for my year car for the hatch issue (recall #16V219000) and notified Nissan on 8/8 but I was told my VIN is not part of that recall either. This hatch is a very real hazard as it will not stay up for loading and unloading items. I feel both of the air bag light and the hatch pose ongoing hazards if not remedied. Having these two items addressed and repaired at Nissan’s expense is desirable since my vehicle is within the recall years and is exhibiting the issues noted in the recalls. Your helping in getting this to Nissan’s attention would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The contact desperately pressed on the brake pedal, but the vehicle would not stop, causing the contact to strike a crane that was in front, causing front damage to the vehicle but no damage to the crane. No one was injured. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was contacted, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was unknown.

On February 27, 2022, my car, 2015 Nissan Rogue, caught fire. My son had been driving it for work when he smelled faint smoke. Within minutes, he reached his place of employ, Papa Johns and parked with the smoke increasing. He went inside for a minute and came back out. At that point the car was on fire on the right side of car by the headlamp. The fire started within 5 minutes of the smoke. People brought out fire extinguishers and were able to extinguish the fire which had gotten very intense. 2-3 extinguishers were needed to put out the fire. The fire department showed up and assessed the car and said it was a electrical fire. There were no personal injuries and no other property damage (beside the car). Two possibly related incidents: 1) February 24, 2022 - the right front tire had to be replaced due to a heat ring on the the right front tire (the tires were only a year old), 2) February 24, 2022 at night - the right front headlamp burned out and was replaced on 2/27/22. The GEICO Claims adjuster believes that whatever caused the heat ring and the burned out bulb also caused the fire as everything happened in the same area. The Nissan Rogue had undergone a 100,000 mile maintenance inspection on January 31, 2022 with no electrical issues cited (but all other issues noted during the maintenance repaired by me to a cost of $1286.40). Caranddriver.com reports that a recall notice is to be issued by Nissan the first week of March 2022 on electrical issues leading to fire on the driver’s side. GEICO totaled the car and took title. The car is now in an insurance lot. My son could have been killed in this car had the car started smoking on the highway and caught fire and my son been unable to pull over and exit the vehicle quickly. The fire could have ruptured the gas tank and caused massive property damage to other vehicles and buildings. The car could have caused my house to catch fire had the car stated smoking in the garage and caught fire.

THERE WERE NO VEHICLES AROUND US ON THE ROAD, SO WE WERE ALL EXTREMELY TERRIFIED. THE CAR HAD BECOME VERY LOUD AT THAT POINT, AND WE IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER TO SIDE OF THE ROAD. IN ADDITION, THE GEARS DID NOT SHIFT FLUIDLY AND THE TRANSBODY SENSOR NEEDED TO BE CHANGED. THE MOST RECENT FAILURE WAS THE VEHICLE SPUTTERING AND THE TRANSMISSION STRAINING TO CHANGE GEARS. BY THE TIME THE CONTACT PULLED INTO HER NEIGHBORHOOD, THE VEHICLE HAD NO ACCELERATION AND THE CHECK ENGINE INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT PLANNED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER. I CALLED NISSAN TO REPORT THIS BEFORE I EVEN CALLED MY INSURANCE AGENT. I ASKED FOR AN INVESTIGATION. IF THIS CAR HAD BEEN PARKED IN THE GARAGE I COULD HAVE ALSO LOST MY HOME AND MY FAMILY. I DOUBT THIS IS AN ISOLATED INCIDENT, AND I FEAR OTHERS MY NOT BE SO FORTUNATE AS TO LOOSE ONLY THE CAR AND NO OTHER DAMAGES. THE CAR HAS BEEN TAKEN AWAY AND IS TO BE INVESTIGATED MARCH 23,2018. *TT
