MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS CONTACTED FOR TREATMENT FOR HER HUSBANDS ODOR IN VENTILATION FROM THE FIRE. ERIE INSURANCE WAS CONTACTED AND TOWED THE VEHICLE TO A LOT WHERE IT WAS DEEMED A TOTAL LOST. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 77,000.

THERE APPEARS TO BE SOME OTHER EVIDENCE AND/OR INSTANCES OF FIRES IN THESE VEHICLES OCCURRING THE SAME WAY.

IN THE EVENING ON 9/4/18 I HAD BEEN SITTING IN MY CAR, WHICH WAS PARKED AND TURNED OFF, WAITING FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES TO PICK UP MY SON. I HAD RECENTLY PURCHASED THE CARE AS A USED VEHICLE ON 8/13/18. THINKING I HAD POKED MYSELF WITH ONE OF THE ATTACHED KEYS (FOR HOME AND WORK), I IMMEDIATELY REMOVED THE KEY FOB FROM MY POCKET AND TOSSED IT INTO A CUP HOLDER. THE INTENSITY OF THE PAIN, HOWEVER, CONTINUED TO PROGRESS. ABOUT 4 HOURS LATER, I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE AREA. IT WAS IN THE SHAPE OF THE KEY FOB WITH AN ULCERATED AREA IN THE MIDDLE. IT WAS EXTREMELY RED AND SWOLLEN. I CLEANED THE AREA GENTLY, AS IT WAS INTENSELY PAINFUL LIKE A BURN. THE NEXT DAY, THE AREA WAS MUCH MORE SWOLLEN AND HOT TO THE TOUCH. AS THE DAY PROGRESSED, THE AREA BEGAN OOZING AND BLISTERING. THE PAIN CONTINUED TO BE VERY INTENSE. IN THE LATE AFTERNOON ON 9/5/18, I VISITED A DOCTOR AT MY PRIMARY CARE FACILITY. I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A SECOND DEGREE BURN WITH A SECONDARY INFECTION. A PRESCRIPTION OF ANTIBIOTICS WERE PRESCRIBED, WHICH I BEGAN IMMEDIATELY. ON THE MORNING OF 9/6/18, THE OOZING HAD RESOLVED FOR THE MOST PART. THOUGH THE AREA WAS STILL SWOLLEN AND PAINFUL, IT HAD SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED AFTER 2 DOSES OF ANTIBIOTICS.

WE WERE TRAVELING IN THE CAR AT APPROXIMATELY 80 MPH. THE CAR ENGINE BEGAN TO RACE STRONGLY WITHOUT A CORRESPONDING INCREASE IN SPEED. THIS HAPPENED TWICE AND THEN A RED OIL INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON. IT SOUNDED ALSO LIKE A HEAD GASKET BLEW ON THE 1.6 LITER ECO-BOOST ENGINE AS THERE WAS A RATTLING NOISE LIKE TUMBLING PEBBLES IN A CAN OR DRUM. WE LOST POWER. BLUE SMOKE STREAMED OUT THE TAIL PIPE OF THE CAR. WE COASTED OVER TO THE SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY AND CAME TO A STOP. BY THE TIME THE CAR CAME TO A STOP SMOKE WAS COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD OF THE CAR. I GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND LOOKED TOWARD THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE. FLAMES WERE COMING FROM BELOW THE CAR JUST INSIDE THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE. WE QUICKLY GOT EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING OUT OF THE CAR. THE FLAMES SPREAD VERY QUICKLY. THE FRONT HALF OF THE CAR WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES IN APPROXIMATELY 4 MINUTES AND THE WHOLE CAR WAS CONSUMED IN ABOUT 8 OR 9 MINUTES.

THIS RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT WHERE I REAR ENDED THE PERSON IN FRONT OF ME. AFTER MY VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED I HAD TO RETURN IT TO THE SHOP BECAUSE THERE AN UNKNOWN MECHANICAL ISSUE, AT THAT TIME I WAS TOLD THERE WAS A RECALL WITH THE ACCELERATOR. MY BEST ASSESSMENT IS THAT THIS MAY HAVE BEEN A CAUSE FOR THE ACCIDENT. ON 05/03/2017, I WENT TO THE GROCERY STORE AND THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED. I WAS LOADING GROCERIES FROM THE SHOPPING CART TO THE VEHICLE. I PLACED SOME BAGS IN, TURNED TO GET MORE AND WHEN I TURNED BACK TO PUT THEM IN THE VEHICLE, I SLAMMED MY HEAD AGAINST THE LOWER EDGE OF THE LIFT GATE WHICH FOR SOME UNKNOWN REASON WAS IN THE PROCESS OF COMING DOWN. I OBTAINED A LACERATION APPROXIMATELY TWO AND A QUARTER INCHES IN LENGTH AND A SEVERE HEADACHE SHORTLY AFTER THAT. ON 05/04/2017, I CONTACTED OUR SALES PERSON AND HE SAID HE HAD NEVER HEARD OF THAT HAPPENING AND FROM WHAT HE KNEW, HE THOUGHT THE LIFT GATE WAS ONLY SUPPOSED TO GO UP WITH THE FOOT ACTIVATION AND NOT DOWN BUT HE IS GOING TO RESEARCH IT FURTHER. I HAVE A CALL INTO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT ALSO AND AM WAITING FOR A CALL BACK. THINKING OVER THE TIME WE HAVE OWNED THE ESCAPE, I NOW RECALL THAT HAPPENING ONE OTHER TIME BUT CAUGHT IT PRIOR TO HITTING IT. I DIDN'T THINK ANYTHING ABOUT IT AT THAT TIME. I BELIEVE IT WAS THE MOTION SENSOR THAT CAUSED THE GATE TO COME DOWN AND NOT THE KEY AS THERE WAS NOTHING IN MY POCKET THE AT WOULD HAVE PUSHED THE BUTTON, PLUS IT HAS TO BE PUSHED TWICE TO ACTIVATE IT.

I WAS IN THE WATER AND ICE FOR APPROX. 10 MINUTES. THE FIRE DEPT, POLICE, AND EMT'S ARRIVED AND PULLED ME FROM THE WATER AND TOOK ME TO THE HOSPITAL. I HAVE 2ND DEGREE BURNS ON MY ARM AND LEGS. MY INSURANCE COMPANY HAS DEEMED THE VEHICLE A TOTAL LOSS AND THE ADJUSTER SAID THE ONLY THING THAT COULD BE SALVAGED WAS 1/2 OF MY LICENSE PLATE. I ASKED WHAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THIS AND THE ADJUSTER SAID THAT PERHAPS IT WAS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM AND WATER MIXED WITH THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEM MAY HAVE CAUSED THE FIRE. ALTHOUGH HE DID STATE THAT HE WAS SPECULATING AND HE DID NOT KNOW WHAT CAUSED THE FIRE AND EXPLOSION. THE VEHICLE IS SITTING AND I HAVE ASKED THAT IT NOT BE DESTROYED (WHAT'S LEFT OF IT) UNTIL THE CAUSE CAN BE DETERMINED. THIS CONCERNS ME GREATLY BECAUSE I DO NOT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO ANYONE ELSE. I BELIEVE IF ANYONE ELSE HAD BEEN IN THE VEHICLE, THEY WOULD NOT HAVE HAD TIME TO ESCAPE. THERE WAS NO SMOKE - ONLY FIRE AND THEN THE EXPLOSION. THE SHOCK IS STARTING TO WEAR OFF AND I KEEP ASKING MYSELF HOW IN THE WORLD A CAR COULD "JUST EXPLODE". PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF ANYONE ELSE HAS HAD ANY PROBLEM LIKE THIS OR IF ANYONE CAN SUGGEST WHAT MAY HAVE CAUSED THIS CATASTROPHE. THANK YOU. *TR

I WAS DRIVING AND I'M NOT SURE IF I HIT A PATCH OF ICE OR STEERING FROZE UP. I WAS TRAVELING 35 IN A 40 MPH ZONE AND ON A CURVE, THE VEHICLE VEERED OFF THE ROAD INTO A BOG. THE VEHICLE STARTED TO SINK AND I WAS UNABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR FOR A FEW MINUTES. I TRIED PUTTING THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE TO GET OUT OF THE WATER AND ICE. THEN I NOTICED A FLAME COMING FROM THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE. I PUSHED THE DOOR OPEN AND BEGAN SWIMMING AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE. AS I WAS ABOUT 30 FEET FROM THE VEHICLE, IT EXPLODED. I WAS IN THE WATER AND ICE FOR APPROX. 10 MINUTES. THE FIRE DEPT, POLICE, AND EMT'S ARRIVED AND PULLED ME FROM THE WATER AND TOOK ME TO THE HOSPITAL. I HAVE 2ND DEGREE BURNS ON MY ARM AND LEGS. WHILE BACKING INTO A PARKING SPACE, THE ABS AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS STARTED FLASHING AND AUDIBLE WARNINGS SOUNDED. THE CAR STARTED SHAKING. I WAS UNABLE TO STOP OR STEER MY CAR. I HAD A LOW SPEED COLLISION WITH A PROPERLY PARKED CAR. THANK GOD NO ONE WAS INJURED. HAD THIS HAPPENED ON AN OPEN ROAD THE OUTCOME WOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT. I HAD REPORTED THIS PROBLEM TO MY DEALER PREVIOUSLY. THEY APPLIED AN EXISTING RECALL SAYING THAT IT FIXED THE ISSUE. THAT WAS ON THE 20TH OF OCTOBER 2015. THE CAR IS BEING TOWED TO MY DEALER'S BODY SHOP FOR INSPECTION BY USAA. I NEVER WANT TO DRIVE IT AGAIN. I AM TOLD TO TRADE IT IN . HOW IN GOOD CONSCIENCE CAN I DO THAT??
