REFUELING SYSTEM - DURING REFUELING, SOMETHING IN THAT PROCESS CONTINUES TO CUT OFF, ACTING AS THOUGH THE TANK IS FULL. WE KNOW THIS IS NOT THE CASE AS WE DRIVE 200 MILES PER WEEK ROUND TRIP TO WORK. THIS HAPPENS NO MATTER WHICH GAS STATION WE FILL UP AT. THIS HAS ALSO HAPPENED TO OUR BROTHER-IN-LAWS VEHICLE. STILL PENDING TO BE FIXED AS HOPEFULLY, IT IS UNDER OUR WARRANTY.

WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 60 MPH OUR 2014 JEEP UNEXPECTEDLY SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL AND LOST POWER. I FILLED MY GAS TANK UP, DROVE IT ABOUT A MILE DOWN THE ROAD, PULLED INTO MY PARKING SPOT, AND THE BRAKES AND STEERING WHEEL LOCKED. ON THE SCREEN IS SAID 'PRESS BRAKE AND PUT INTO GEAR'. MY HUSBAND GOT INTO THE CAR AND EVERYTHING SEEMED TO BE OKAY WITH IT AND HE DECIDED TO DRIVE IT RIGHT DOWN THE ROAD AND SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON WITH IT. ABOUT 3 MILES DOWN THE ROAD, HE WAS GOING THE SPEED LIMIT, 45 MPH, AND THE ENTIRE VEHICLE COMES TO A STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION, THE BRAKES LOCK, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS AND THE ENGINE CUT OFF AND THE SCREEN SAID SERVICE TRANSMISSION AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. WE HAD IT TOWED TO THE JEEP DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THE CODE WAS FOR A FUEL PUMP. WE WERE TOLD THIS WAS CURRENTLY UNDER INVESTIGATION AND WAS A BIG ISSUE WITH THESE MODELS. THEY SAID IT NEEDS A NEW FUEL PUMP AND EVAC SYSTEM.

AT AROUND 50,000 MILES, THE CHECK VALVE ON THE FUEL TANK FILLER TUBE MALFUNCTIONED. THIS MALFUNCTION CAUSED FUEL FILL NOZZLES AT THE GAS STATION TO AUTOMATICALLY STOP AND IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO FILL THE TANK. THE JEEP DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED THIS ISSUE AS A CHECK VALVE AND THE ONLY SOLUTION TO THE ISSUE WAS REPLACING THE ENTIRE FUEL TANK. I HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET EXPENSES TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE FUEL TANK.

THE VEHICLE'S GAS TANK HAS STOPPED WORKING PROPERLY. WHEN I TRY TO FILL IT UP, IT ALMOST IMMEDIATELY STOPS THE PUMP AND USUALLY SHOOT GAS BACK OUT ALL OVER ME HAND AND CLOTHES. I AM ABLE TO GET VERY SMALL AMOUNTS OF GAS IN THE TANK, BUT NOT WITHOUT GETTING GAS SPILLED EVERYWHERE. THIS APPEARS TO BE A MAJOR SAFETY/FIRE HAZARD. MY LOCAL JEEP DEALER FIRST SAID THEY COULD NOT DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM AND LATER SAID THAT I NEEDED A NEW FUEL TANK AND THAT IT WOULD COST ABOUT $1200 PLUS. I THEN CALLED CHRYSLER TO REPORT THE PROBLEM TO SEE IF THEY WOULD VOLUNTARILY FIX IT. TOO SAY THAT IT WAS AN UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE DEALING WITH THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVES WOULD BE AN UNDERSTATEMENT. CHRYSLER SAID THAT SINCE MY VEHICLE WAS A 2014 JEEP CHEROKEE, THAT IT WAS MY PROBLEM AND THEY WOULD NOT REPLACE MY GAS TANK. THEY DID NOT APPEAR TO CARE THAT GAS GETTING ALL OVER MY HANDS AND CLOTHES WAS DANGEROUS.

WHEN REFUELING THE VEHICLE WOULD SHUT OFF PREMATURELY AS IF IT WAS FULL AFTER ON 1-2 TENTHS OF A GALLON. TO FILL UP THE TANK TOOK ABOUT 10 MINUTES BECAUSE OF THIS MALFUNCTIONING. SOON AFTER THIS THE TRANSMISSION STARTED TO DEFAULT AND SHIFT TO NEUTRAL WHICH IS A BAD THING WHEN CROSSING MULTIPLE LANES OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC. WHAT I THOUGHT WAS SAFE I SOON LEARNED WAS A SERIOUS RISK TO OTHERS AS WELL AS MYSELF. THIS STARTED HAPPENING MORE FREQUENTLY AND A SOLUTION WAS NEVER FOUND. THE VEHICLE WOULD WORK FINE FOR A FEW WEEKS AND THEN THE VICIOUS CYCLE OF THE ONGOING ISSUE OF DEFAULTING TO NEUTRAL WHILE IN TRAFFIC WOULD OCCUR. JUST THE OTHER DAY THE DIAGNOSIS "POST WARRANTY" IDENTIFIED THAT THE VAPOR CANISTER AND FUEL PUMP WAS THE ISSUE. EARLIER I WAS TOLD THAT REPLACING THE BATTERY SOLVED THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM, WHICH WASN'T TO BE. REPLACING THE VAPOR CANISTER, AND FUEL PUMP COST $1292.45 AND I'VE ONLY DRIVEN MY VEHICLE FROM THE DEALERSHIP TO THE GARAGE.

AFTER OWNING THE CAR FOR APPROXIMATELY 1 YEAR, I SUDDENLY SMELLED GASOLINE WHILE DRIVING AND NOTICED THE CAR WAS HARD TO START. TURNS OUT THE FUEL PUMP UNIT HAS A CRACK IN THE TOP WHICH IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM. I AM PRESENTLY AWAITING THE $650 PART AND THE CAR WILL BE REPAIRED NEXT WEEK ($190 LABOR). THE THING IS, I WAS INITIALLY TOLD BY MY REPUTABLE CAR REPAIR SHOP OWNER THAT HE HAS SEEN THIS PROBLEM SEVERAL TIMES OVER AND IS PRETTY SURE THERE IS A RECALL AGAINST IT, THUS NO INITIAL CHARGE. FOR WHATEVER THE REASON, I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND ANOTHER REPORTED INCIDENT OF THIS SPECIFIC NATURE. NONETHELESS, THIS IS A POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE AND IS WHY I AM REPORTING IT (IN ADDITION TO HAVING TO SPEND $840 TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM).

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE LOCAL DEALER (BURK AUTO GROUP JEEP, 1565 WEST OGDEN AVE., NAPERVILLE, ILLINOIS) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE EVAPORATOR CONTROL CANISTER WAS FAULTY. THE EVAPORATOR CONTROL CANISTER WAS REPLACED AND THE PURGE CONTROL WAS REPROGRAMMED, BUT THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE FAILURES OCCURRED ONLY AFTER THE FUEL TANK WAS FILLED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 47,000. *TT *TR
