What 1,418 owners told NHTSA about the 2013 Honda Accord Fhev

The ABS on the honda accords from 2013-2017 all have failures right now. My car and my friends car has the same issue. Took it to the dealership and the guy working there even said this should be a recall. Alot of the honda accords have been having this same issue. All the warning lights on the dash light up and its because of the bad ABS module going bad. I realy think honda should take responsibility on this. It is costing me $3,318 to fix it.

driving home from manhattan i hit bump and the steering light came on and i could not steer my car. Realizing what happened (i first thought the car stalled) i was able to put the car in neutral , shut it off, and restart it hoping the problem would go away which thankfully it did. 2013 Honda Accord accelerated to a very high speed when driving from the church parking lot, braking did not stop it. barely avoided hitting a car. On Sunday [XXX] at around 13:45pm, as I was leaving the church parking lot, driving at around 5 miles an hour, the car suddenly accelerated to a very high speed, I tried braking but that did not stop it. The car entered and crossed the street, barely missed hitting a car, then entered the parking lot of a dollar store, finally stopping on the far side of the parking lot. Car was at the dealership for two days, the car was driven, and an extensive examination was done, but they could not duplicate the concern and did not find any problems with the vehicle. When this episode occurred, there was no prior warning and the action of the vehicle was extremely fast. This was absolutely scary. Please let it be known to the Honda Manufacturer that the car is defective, this defect needs to be fixed as soon as possible, before someone or multiple people are seriously injured or killed, or extensive property damage is done. I lost control of vehicle while driving because the electrical steering motor stopped working. I’ve had the electric starter already replaced twice with Honda parts and it’s still not working. There’s something wrong with the steering. I already placed a complaint and I have not heard back from Honda or NHTSA. I sent letters to NYS Senators Schumer and Hillabrand and I have not yet heard back from them yet either. I sent letters emails to Congress and the Senate transportation committees. I’ve found testimonials for the same issues online even with videos. I just read a complaint that was nearly identical the experience I had except it happened in 2020. The power steering stops and starts same for the cars starter and windows. I took the car to Honda dealer to repair it on March [XXX], 2024. I now have a car repair bill for $8500 at Curry Honda in Yorktown Heights. They said I needed to replace entire exhaust system $3000 because they couldn’t get to the steering column without taking down the fragile exhaust system. Basically, I had no choice. In order to start the repairs they wanted a $4,500 down payment which I paid. They’ve now had the car for 37 days. They described the steering column and motor system as being completely corroded to the point where the steering column was going to snap/break. What they said at the Honda dealer was the Honda steering motor and wiring was completely corroded which is not common. A few weeks later they told me that the knuckle/ball bearings were rusted out and that all the shock absorbers needed replaced as they were also rusted out even the screws according to them. They said these should all be replaced or I would fail inspection. The bill went from $3000 to $4700 to $6200 to $7900 to now $8500 includes tax. They’re still working on the vehicle and they’ve had it since March [XXX], it’s now May [XXX], 2024. I’ve asked them for the parts that they’re removing and they said they’ll save the parts. Several Dashboard lights came on. Electric Steering ,Tire Pressure Sensor, Traction Control, ABS, Brake lights. Paid 300 dollar diagnostic fee for Honda dealer to tell me this is a known issue on Hondas and would cost 3,000 dollars to repair. Final verdict, ABS module needs replacement. Also seems to be causing issues with the transmission shift points due to the Vehicle speed sensor having an error with code P-0717 input shaft speed error. Upon doing research, the mother board connections from connector to the motherboard are very thin and lose connection over time causing safety issues since it's unknown if the ABS is working correctly with the fault lights on, also the tire pressure is not currently monitored correctly due to the light is always on among other monitored systems that have lights illuminated on the dashboard.

Our 2013 Honda Accord driveshaft fractured completely under a low condition when accelerating from a stop straight into a busy intersection. As a result, with the drive train now disabled I had just enough motion to coast a couple of car lengths, across the adjacent gap in the turning lane traffic, to the side of the road stopping adjacent to the curb halfway around the corner. As the corner was heavily traveled by semi-trailer traffic, I needed to get corner cleared as soon as possible to avoid causing an additional traffic hazard. Fortunately, there were those who stopped to help push the car up a hill and clear the way for other vehicles attempting to negotiate the corner. I currently have the defective part in my possession. Due to the location in a busy intersection other including myself were at risk trying to clear the roadway. The repair shop mechanic inspected the failed drive shaft as well as my local Honda service manager. I found afterwards that there is a known recall on component (Part 573 Safety Recall Report [XXX]) for a defect that causes rusting of this component. I was not made aware of the this recall. The recall appears however to be limited to certain states due to their road de-icing/salting policies. Our state of South Dakota was not among them. This prevented owners (and I assume dealers) in our state (South Dakota) from getting any advanced warning of the possible safety hazard. Also, no instrumentation on the vehicle or changes in driving performance can warn you of this impending failure. In my view this defect should have been made know to all owners of 2013 Honda accord and certainly in states such as South Dakota, as even the mud that accumulates on the vehicles drivetrain from the miles driven on unpaved roads can be even more detrimental to improperly protected metal parts, such as this drive shaft. Hoping to take care of the starter grinding on startup for my 2013 Honda Accord V6… It’s a known issue with the 2013-2017 Accord V6 redesigned starter (starter part number 31200-5G0-A02). Honda's fix (TSB 16-002) is yet another redesigned starter (redesign of the redesigned starter part number 31200-5G0-A04 ), plus a one time only one hole rotation of the flywheel. In the TSB 16-002 it states: If replacing the starter with the redesigned starter and rotating the flywheel doesn't work, then the next course of action is to replace the torque converter (which is not cheap and who knows if it’s a good fix…REALLY). I had the starter and engine battery replaced before on this car at a Honda dealership to correct the problem. Needless to say, it did not correct the screeching noises upon pushing the start engine button. The safety of the driver and the occupants will be in peril when being stuck in hazardous weather (storms, heat alert indexes, snow, freezing weather) without the ability to start the car. This is a design flaw that Honda clearly knows about with no solution in sight. I already had this repaired before at a Honda dealership, but it never corrected the problem. Honda needs to initiate a recall since it knows it’s a massive problem by issuing a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB 16-002).

I was extremely disappointed to learn that this was a known problem but there had been no recall. We had no indications nor any information that this could occur. We located a Honda dealership approximately 22 miles from our location and decided we would carefully try to get to that location. At the dealership we were told it was a known problem but they would have to locate parts, which they did in Atlanta, and have them overnighted if possible. They were very helpful, drove us to a hotel which we paid for, as we waited for parts to arrive. While fixing the electronic steering system they located another issue with another electronic box that had something to do with the starter which needed to be replaced as well. Each of these problems I came to understand were known to Honda, and I believe NHTSA, but no recalls were issued. I'm sorry but I believe that the potential to be killed and to kill others due to the failure of the electronic steering system while driving a vehicle that is known to have these problems is a recall and should be repaired and replaced at Honda's expense not those that invested in what they considered a safe vehicle. On 1/24/24, we were driving at about 65 mph. With no warning, FCW, LDW, ABS, Tire Pressure and check engine lights as well as FCW System Failure reported on dash. The car slowed to about 20-25mph and sounded rough. Cars behind were going with speed of traffic (about 65) and had to break behind us and were honking their horns at us despite emergency flashers on. We pulled over and turned off engine for a few minutes. We turn engine back on and warning lights were off and we could drive normally again. We thought it was a glitch. About three weeks later on 2/21/24, we were on a highway pass over mountain traveling about 65mph. The lights came on again and car slowed again to about 25mph. This was very dangerous on a pass with many cars accelerating around us on the uphill part of the pass. We had to pull over again. We turned engine back on but FCW and LDW lights remained on. We were able to drive normally again. When we got home, I took the car to a mechanic who did a diagnostic test and replaced the high pressure fuel pump. The FCW and LDW lights remained on as well as notification of FCW System Failure. The mechanic said he did not have recalibration equipment and I would have to go to Honda dealer for recalibration. I have an appointment on 3/6/24 with Honda for recalibration. I have since gone online and see many Honda owners are having this occur with various fixes but the problem has recurred for many owners. This is very dangerous and needs to be addressed ASAP before a collision occurs and possible death of those involved as a result.
