While driving on the highway last night, my husband smelled smoke and then his eyes began to burn. As he was about to pull over, a flame fell from the passenger sun visor! There was more smoke and fire as he pulled over. The car became engulfed in flames fairly quickly. Thankfully he was alone without other family members (or our dog) and he was able to get out safely. He had to stand on the side of the highway waiting for responders. It was towed and we are in the process of speaking with insurance and figuring out what to do next. Today we researched Dodge Durango car fire and came across the recall from 2014 which SPECIFICALLY said passenger sun visor fire hazard! Clearly that is exactly what happened. We have proof that we brought the vehicle to the dealership in 2014 to complete this recall. However it appears based on internet searches that this was still an issue even after recalls were performed. There were no warnings/messages prior to the failure.

This is on Chrysler: Chrysler "FCA US LLC" is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger, Chrysler 300, Dodge Durango, and 2012-2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles. The affected vehicles have electro-hydraulic power steering "EHPS" and are equipped with a 5.7L or a 3.6L engine and a 160, 180 or 220 amp alternator. In the affected vehicles, the alternator may suddenly fail. Alternator fails, the vehicle may stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash. There is also the possibility that the alternator may short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire. This happened 8/19/2023, the alternator caught on fire. My mechanic now says it fried my electrical system as well

The contact stated that when his son opened the driver's side door the vehicle ignited and blew the passenger side door open. The vehicle became engulfed in flames. The fire department and police were called to the scene. The contact stated that the fire had been extinguished with water. The contact said that the local fire chief had opened an investigation and the police had written a report. The vehicle was mounted onto a flatbed truck and taken to an impound lot. The contact stated that his insurance provider had declared the vehicle a total loss. The contact had attempted to notify the manufacturer of the failure, but could not get his phone call taken. The contact had researched online and related the failure to an open recall NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V813000 (Electrical System). The failure mileage was approximately 300,000.

The contact's husband noticed the vehicle was on fire while approaching the resident. The fire department was on the scene and stated it was due to an electrical fire in the vanity mirror. There were no reported injuries, air bag deployment or a police report filed. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted but no additional assistance was provided. The insurance company deemed the vehicle a total loss. The failure mileage was approximately 123.000.

The contact owns a 2013 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that while driving at 40 - 45 mph, the battery warning light was illuminated and other unknown warning lights would illuminate on and off. Additionally, the windshield wiper was inadvertently activated, the doors would not lock, and a burning odor was detected coming from under the hood of the vehicle. The vehicle then lost motive power. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and diagnosed with alternator failure and the computer system's wires were burned out. The alternator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained with the mechanic. The dealer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall and referred the contact to NHTSA. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V634000 (Electrical System) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 148,000.

The driver started the following day while driving 25 mph when the vehicle and the steering wheel seized. The driver stated he lost control of the vehicle and it steered to the right and crashed into multiple parked vehicles. The driver stated no warning light was illuminated. The driver stated both front driver and passenger side airbags deployed. The driver stated he had minor injuries on his right side shoulder and elbow but did not seek medical attention. SHE TURNED CAR OFF, THEN BACK ON - SMOKE BEGAN TO BELLOW OUT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I DID SOME CURSORY RESEARCH ON THIS PHENOMENON, FOUND AN OUTSTANDING RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE (T36); I CALLED FOLLOWING DAY TO MAKE RECALL CLAIM. IN DECEMBER 2017 SAID VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE SHOP FOR A NO START CONDITION. AFTER BRINGING IT IN WE DETERMINED A SEVERE SHORT IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, TRACED TO ALTERNATOR. WE ALSO FOUND MELTED BATTERY. FOUND THIS VEHICLE FELL UNDER THE T36 RECALL FROM FCA. WE GOT APPROVAL AT THAT TIME TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE AND RECEIVED A CASE NUMBER FOR REIMBURSEMENT. WE HAD TO CALL BACK MULTIPLE TIMES TO CONTINUE AUTHORIZATION, AND WAS TOLD AS LONG AS THE PROBLEMS WERE RELATED TO THE ALTERNATOR THEN THEY WOULD BE REIMBURSED FROM 30-60 DAYS FROM THE TIME OF SUBMISSION. AFTER SUBMITTING NEEDED PAPER WORK AND DOCUMENTATION WE WAITED. THE CUSTOMER STOPPED IN IN MAY AND ASKED US TO CHECK ON IT SINCE HE HAD NOT HEARD ANYTHING YET. CALLED FCA AND FOUND OUT THAT NOTHING HAD BEEN DONE WITH THE CLAIM BECAUSE OF AN INTERNAL ERROR THAT SENT THE PAPER WORK TO THE WRONG DEPARTMENT. AFTER CALLING AGAIN ON 6/13/18 WE FOUND OUT THAT AGAIN, IT HAD NOT BEEN FILED OR SENT TO THE RIGHT PEOPLE. TODAY (6/13/18) I SENT THE INFORMATION AGAIN AND WAS PROMISED IT WOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF. IT HAS NOW BEEN 6 MONTHS FROM THE DATE OF THE REPAIR AND NO EFFORT HAS BEEN MADE TO REIMBURSE THE CUSTOMER FOR ANYTHING. FCA SAID IT WOULD BE HANDLED IN 30-60 DAYS. I FEEL THAT THIS IS UNREASONABLE. THIS CUSTOMER HAS BEEN VERY UNDERSTANDING BUT IS RUNNING OUT OF PATIENCE. WE NOW HAVE 3 DIFFERENT CASE NUMBERS AND I HAVE DOCUMENTATION OF TALKING TO 4 DIFFERENT PEOPLE TO RESOLVE THE MATTER. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR 2013 DURANGO WITH MY TWO YOUNG GIRLS COMING HOME FROM SCHOOL WHEN THEY ALL NOTICED A BAD BURNING SMELL AND THEN SMOKE STARTED COMING THROUGH THE AIR VENTS AND THE A/C WENT HOT. SHE PULLED OVER AND I CAME TO MEET THEM ON SIDE OF BUSY MILITARY TRAIL WITH THE BURNING TRUCK I WAS TOLD. LIFTED THE HOOD AND I NOTICED THE ALTERNATOR WAS SUPER HOT AND HAD BURNED THE SERPENTINE BELT. WENT TO CHECK BATTERY IN TRUCK ACTUALLY UNDER PASSANGER'S SEAT, THIS WAS EXTREMELY HOT AS WELL. HAD DURANGO TOWED TO HOUSE THE RESEARCH MORE ABOUT PROBLEM AND FOUND THIS RECALL P60!! I FIGURED THE ALTERNATOR WAS FRIED AND BATTERY TOOK A DUMP AS WELL, SO OFF I WENT TO PURCHASED BOTH PARTS FOR ME TO REPLACE AND HOPEFULLY FIX THIS MAJOR LIFE SAFETY ISSUE. I PUT IN THE NEW BATTERY AND THE ALTERNATOR BEGAN TO SMOKE BADLY AND TRUCK WAS ACTUALLY OFF. PULLED BATTERY OUT AND THEN DECIDED TO CHANGE ALTERNATOR FIRST. ALL COMPLETE AND THEN HOOKED UP NEW BATTERY ALL WELL, TRUCK STARTED AND NO SMOKE. BATTERY LIGHT CAME ON NOW AND TRUCK WIPERS STARTED TO GO WITH DASH LIGHT DOING CRAZY THINGS, TRUCK STALLED OUT AND WOULD NOT RESTART. FINALLY HAD IT TOWED TO LOCAL FIRESTONE FOR DIAGNOSTICS AND CURRENTLY STILL WAITING TO FIND OUT WHAT IS WRONG AND HOW MUCH IT WILL BE TO FIX TRUCK BACK TO NORMAL. I AM SCARED FOR MY FAMILY THAT DRIVES IN THIS TRUCK EVERYDAY. I CAN NOT BELIEVE MY VEHICLE AND OTHERS THIS HAS HAPPENED TO IS NOT ON RECALL DUE TO STUPID AMPS!! THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBERS: 14V634000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM) AND 17V435000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM); HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS EXCLUDED FROM BOTH RECALLS. THE MANUFACTURER OPENED CASE NUMBER: 32173838 AND STATED THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO OFFER LITTLE ASSISTANCE REGARDING THE REPAIR SEPARATE FROM THE RECALLS. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,000.

THE CONTACT CALLED SCOTT EVANS CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM AT (770) 834-5050 AND WAS ADVISED TO REPLACE THE BATTERY. THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED AND WHEN THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE, SMOKE WAS SEEN COMING FROM THE ALTERNATOR. THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND THE BATTERY WAS DISCONNECTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THEY WOULD SEND OUT AN INVESTIGATOR. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER FOR THE CHRYSLER INVESTIGATOR TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED BY THE INVESTIGATOR THAT THERE WAS NO SIGN OF A FIRE AND THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO UNIVERSITY CHRYSLER, DODGE, JEEP, RAM OF ROME (2500 NEW CALHOUN HWY NE, ROME, GA 30161 (706) 232-7793) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A FAULTY ALTERNATOR THAT NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE ALTERNATOR WAS REPLACED, BUT THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNABLE TO START. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN DIAGNOSED WITH A BURNT OUT TOTALLY INTEGRATED POWER MODULE DUE TO THE ALTERNATOR AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS STILL AT THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 94,000.

ALTERNATOR CAUGHT ON FIRE, IMPACTING MY BATTERY AND AFTER GETTING THIS FIXED I AM STILL HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE FAILING AFTER I JUST GOT IT OUT OF THE SERVICE CENTER. THE FIRST TIME THE ALTERNATOR CAUGHT ON FIRE IT WAS IN IDLE, STATIONARY. THE SECOND ALTERCATION AFTER PICKING IT UP FROM THE DEALERSHIP IT HAD INTERIOR/EXTERIOR LIGHTS GOING ON AND OFF ALONG WITH MY WINDSHIELD WIPERS OPERATING WHILE OFF. I HAVE HAD A NUMBER OF PROBLEMS SINCE PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE AND BELIEVE I WAS SOLD A LEMON. I WOULD LIKE TO GET THIS ADDRESSED ASAP! THANKS MUCH.

DRIVING DOWN THE STREET UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS WHEN BATTERY LIGHT CAME ON AND A STRONG BURNING SMELL APPEARED. PULLED OVER TO FIND HEAVY SMOKE COMING FROM THE ENGINE--APPEARED TO BE THE ALTERNATOR BURNING. TOOK THE CAR IMMEDIATELY TO A LOCAL GARAGE DOWN THE BLOCK FROM INCIDENT. THEY STARTED THE CAR AND VERIFIED THE ALTERNATOR HAD FAILED,WAS SMOKING, AND ABOUT TO CATCH FIRE. ALL GAUGES WERE MISREADING. ALTERNATOR WAS REPLACED BUT THE DASH WARNING LIGHTS AND ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS ARE NO LONGER WORKING. (SPEEDOMETER, GAUGES, WARNING LIGHTS, RADIO...) NOTIFIED DODGE WITH NO RESOLUTION TO THIS POINT.

THE CONTACT WAITED A FEW MINUTES TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND IT LOST ALL POWER. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE KEY FAILED TO EJECT FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE ALTERNATOR CAUSED THE BATTERY AND THE COMPUTER SYSTEM TO FAIL. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V634000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 93,000.
