Safety recall repairs are free at the brand’s franchised dealers. Before buying, run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and make the seller show the work was done.

BMW is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 S 1000 RR motorcycles manufactured September 2011, through December 2012. Due to a manufacturing fault, the side-stand attachment bolts could start to loosen. The loosening of the side-stand bolts could cause the stand to separate from the frame of the motorcycle.

Risk: A separation of the side-stand could cause the motorcycle to fall, causing a risk of injury.

Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will clean the sidestand mounting plate threads and replace the side-stand mounting plate bolts, free of charge. The recall began on January 29, 2013. Owners may call BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.

The fine print: this verdict is computed from public NHTSA complaint and recall records for the 2013 BMW S 1000 Rr as a model, not for any individual car. A well-maintained example of an “Avoid” can outlast a neglected “Buy”. Informational only, so always get a professional pre-purchase inspection.
