What 323 owners told NHTSA about the 2012 Ford F-250 Super Crew

My wife and I were traveling on I-40 at about 70 mph when the front end of the vehicle started shacking violently. We had to slow and come to a complete stop. This happened twice so we returned home driving about 50 mph. The first shop replaced the stablizer shock. This did not help. Took it to a second shop they replace the ball joint this seemed to help until got to highway speed. It happened again. The shop then installed shocks for each wheel. So far this has corrected the issue.

Ford replaced worn put parts and said they could not replicate the problem and everything is good. Driving down the same stretch of high way that causes the death wobble caused the problem again. I almost caused an accident from the sudden reduction in speed in order to regain control of my truck. The service advisor said it could be possble the tires are not balanced, so I had the tires rotated and balanced. Immediately after i left the dealership this incident occurred.

The contact had to come to a complete stop then pull over to the side of the road. The contact stated the wobbling seized till they came to a similar uneven patch on the road at approximately 60 mph. Again, the contact had to pull over to seize the wobble. The contact had to drive at less than 50 mph to avoid the failure from reoccurring. The contact had not taken the vehicle to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 30,000.

Tire size 275/70R 18. I purchased these tires in April of 2020 from Stivers Ford in Birmingham, Al. I have since replaced 4 deflective tires and 2 tires there about to be defective. The major problem with this tire is that 1 of these tires blew out while driving 70mph on I-22 in Graysville, Al exit 87 westbound. This blowout resulted in my truck doing a 720 in the middle of traffic, if I had had a trailer connected to my truck this probably would have resulted in my death and/or others. I have since filed a claim with Continental Tires The Americas Case# 21218001, and sent all of the tires back to them that were defective. Continental Tires claims this was a result of a road hazard condition (6 times??). My vehicle was inspected by Sherrill Auto body and found that there was $5000+ damage that occurred. There were no warning lights or messages, the only warning I had was the truck started shaking and when the front tires went bad, there was shaking and death wobble at times. There is a recall on these tires "but not with my DOT#".

I was driving on the highway and the front of the truck started to shake uncontrollably. I thought maybe I hit something. Then a little while longer it did it again when I hit a bump. Thank goodness not a lot of cars around I had to turn on my blinkers and try to pull over . No warning lights no bells no whistles nothin happen before or after. Then on August 29,2021 it happened again this time a busy road . Cars behind me almost ran into me I don’t remember any bumps in the road at all . There was no warning ,!scared me. On multiple occasions I have experienced a “death wobble” or a violent shaking that happens to the front end. It typically occurs at speeds over 50 miles per hour. It can also happen after going over bumps or grooves in the road. To stop the shaking, I must quickly slow way down or even stop completely. When driving on the interstate at the start of a full day on the road, the front of the truck started shaking violently. At first, I thought I had encountered a rough stretch of road, but there was no way the washboard effect I was experiencing was from the road. It was far too fast and violent. My next thoughts were that I was about to lose a front tire...or both front tires...or maybe the engine was seizing up. Whatever it was, something was seriously wrong and it was scary. I responded by taking my foot off the accelerator and braking, and then easing across two lanes of traffic to the side of the road, where the shaking stopped. I was traveling with my daughter and five-month-old granddaughter, and once I slowed down, the shaking stopped. The truck then ran normally and we were able to resume our trip without any further issues. The truck is currently at the Ford dealer to be serviced and they are looking into the problem, though when I described what had happened, the lady at the service desk said, "Yeah, some of these trucks have that problem." I now have serious concerns about the safety of this truck, particularly since I often travel alone pulling a horse trailer and for long distances. Were this to happen with a fully loaded trailer, in heavy traffic, on a curve, and/or going down a mountain pass, I don't know what would happen since with the steering wheel and front of the truck were shaking so violently that it didn't feel like I had any control over the front end of the vehicle. I am grateful I was on a straight stretch of highway and that the traffic wasn't too heavy.

When going over 50mph and hitting a bump the vehicle will shake and vibrate uncontrollably. The steering wheel will shake so violently that it is difficult to control the steering. Must come to a complete stop for the shaking and vibration to stop. This is extremely dangerous in traffic and especially if you are unable to pull to the side of the road as in driving in the mountains. Vehicle has been in the shop several times and problem was reproduced by the technician. Several suspension parts have been replaced at a high cost and problem has not been resolved. Research has shown that this is a problem with Ford trucks and no resolution has been provided by Ford.

THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 FORD F-250. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE CONTACT SMELLED SMOKE COMING FROM INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED NO WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN UNKNOWN LOCAL DEALER TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE ENTIRE VEHICLE WIRING HARNESS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. ADDITIONALLY, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE INSULATION BURNED OFF THE WIRES FROM THE PASSENGER’S TO THE DRIVER’S SIDE CAUSING THE DOOR LOCKS TO BECOME INOPERABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT YET REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 83,404.
