TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 DODGE CHALLENGER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE SMOKE WAS PRESENT COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND THE BATTERY POWER WAS DRAINED CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO STALL. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE LOCAL DEALER DICK POE DODGE (1363 AIRWAY BOULEVARD EL PASO, TX 79925-2213) WHO DIAGNOSED THE ALTERNATOR WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 17V435000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE LISTED IN THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 72,000.

2011 CHALLENGER WITH LESS THAN 3000 MILES. STORED IN GARAGE (ATTACHED TO HOUSE), NEVER OUT IN WINTER OR IN RAIN. WENT TO START THE VEHICLE TO TAKE IN FOR A RECALL WHEN THE ELECTRONICS STARTED TO FLASH AND CLICK RANDOMLY. UNABLE TO CLEAR OR STOP THE MALFUNCTION. TRUNK WOULD NOT RELEASE ELECTRICALLY, HAD TO CRAWL THROUGH THE BACK SEAT TO GET TO THE MANUAL RELEASE. DISCONNECTED AND REPLACED ORIGINAL BATTERY (IN TRUNK). UPON CONNECTING NEGATIVE TERMINAL, LARGE DRAW ON BATTERY, TERMINAL BECAME HOT IMMEDIATELY. DISCONNECTED TERMINAL WITHIN 10 SECONDS. SMOKE APPEARED FROM UNDER HOOD. OPENED HOOD AND FOUND SMALL FIRE NEAR ALTERNATOR. FIRE EXTINGUISHED WITH ABOUT 1 LITER OF WATER. FOUND BURNED OUT WIRING HARNESS NEAR ALTERNATOR. FLAT BED TOWED INTO DEALER FOR INVESTIGATION AND SERVICE (PENDING).

THE CONTACT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE AND DROVE TO DON DAVIS DODGE JEEP (1901 N COLLINS ST, ARLINGTON, TX 76011 (877) 376-9083). THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE ALTERNATOR WAS FAULTY. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000.

THE CONTACT DID NOT OBSERVE SMOKE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ALTERNATOR BURNED OUT AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V634000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM); HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 82,000.

SMOKE APPEARED NEAR THE FRONT END AND THE BATTERY HAD AN ELECTRICAL SHORT ASSOCIATED WITH THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO REPLACED THE ALTERNATOR ASSEMBLY AND THE BATTERY. THE CONTACT LATER RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V634000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO SUPPLY THE PART TO RECEIVE THE RECALL REPAIR WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME FRAME. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE WHEN THE PART WOULD BE SENT TO THE DEALER. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE WHEN THE VEHICLE WOULD BE REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.

I WAS RETURNING TO WORK FROM LUNCH AND I WAS DRIVING SOUTH IN THE COMPANY PARKING LOT GOING NO FASTER THAN 5-10 MPH. I STARTED TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN INTO A PARKING SPACE SO THAT I COULD BACK INTO THE PARKING SPACE DIRECTLY BEHIND IT. AS I STARTED TO MAKE THE TURN I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE GAS AND PLACED IT ON THE BRAKE SO I COULD COME TO A COMPLETE STOP BEFORE I BACKED UP INTO THE SPACE BEHIND ME. AS I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE THE CAR ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN AND BECAUSE I HAD NO TIME TO REACT THE CAR PLOWED THROUGH A TREE, SOME HEAVY VEGETATION AND DOWN AN EMBANKMENT. THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO THE FRONT OF THE CAR, AS A RESULT OF THE IMPACT WITH THE TREE, WHICH CAUSED THE ENTIRE BUMPER TO FALL OFF AND DESTROYED. YET, THE AIRBAGS, WHICH WERE RECALLED AND ALREADY "SERVICED" ONCE BEFORE, NEVER DEPLOYED. *TR
